v Millwall (a) - 21/12/2024

Recommended Posts

From afar, this might look like an unfortunate defeat but from watching it, I thought we were deservedly beaten. Showed little ambition and never exerted any sustained pressure. Millwall were unremarkable and lacked quality but at least tried to be positive.

If you play like we did then you forfeit the right to complain if the opponents grab a late winner.

Id classify that as only marginally better than the Coventry performance. Only because of the unfortunate circumstances with going down to 10.

I'd need to see it again but it came at him pretty fast so I think he just stuck a leg out. I was more angry at Weimann's earlier pathetic clearance that he had all the time to boot up the park which led to them going forward and eventually scoring.

And then the pathetic attempt at stopping the initial cross by Hedges and Weimann.

Yeah all very avoidable which just makes it sting a bit...

I thought it was pretty in keeping with the Boro and Wednesday performances. They had a lot of the ball but created very few clear cut chances, whereas the ACD and Weismann chances were the best in the half. I doubt we concede with 11 .

Therefore the defeat hurts but doesn’t worry me as much as the injuries do and the upcoming workload on Baath and Hyam does.  I worry the Burnley game will feature a team fairly different than those which won 6 on the bounce.

Eustace is squeezing every ounce out of a limited squad, we will inevitably sometimes come up short.

Don't really think Millwall did enough to deserve the win but they put their chance away and Cozier-Duberry missed ours. Those are the margins in a Championship where there's a fag paper between a lot of teams.

The lads should be proud of their achievements up to now, 5th on Christmas day is a remarkable position.

It shouldn’t have stood because the Millwall player who scored, pushed Batth out of the way as the cross was coming in. No surprise that the officials didn’t spot it.

Were they the same ones who missed Hyam’s offside at Middlesbrough? 😉

Was it not his clearance that went straight to Thier winger to swing it in? Apologies if it wasn't but it was a tame and weak clearance.

Bit harsh, came at him quickly and he cleared it where he could. I didn't think at the time he did a lot wrong.

Maybe harsh but it comes a far enough distance away for me for him to anticipate it a bit better. If he gets a bit more air on it or swings his left foot at it and gets it down field it's a different outcome. Instead it was like a laser pass directly to their wingers boot. Disappointing for me.

Still think we took off Amario and Todd too early...would only had prefered taking Pick off for Becks.

An absolutely dreadful match to watch. Seen more football in the local park on a Sunday morning. Hoofball is the only description and it went on for 98 sodding minutes.

Poor substitutions that lost whatever little control and outlets Rovers had in the match. Dolan absolutely dreadful and won't be missed next season. Weiman and Hedges powder-puff defending. Pickering is an injury waiting to happen. Travis hamstrung by an early booking from a poor ref and then later literally hamstrung. Far too much space given away to the flanks and a goal felt inevitable from the number of crosses they were allowed to put in. Gueye put in a lot of effort but most of the time doesn't know what he's trying to do. Cantwell looked like a ming vase in the middle of a stampede.

Still struggling to see what Gueye brings to the squad personally.

That hole needs filling and quick. I don't think anyone was particularly on it today, 2 games at home coming up to get that spirit and form back just an off day all round. Back on it for Sunderland

Blue n white Army!!🔵🔵🔵

Just a blip pal 6 wins and like 5 clean sheets in a row at this level is not to be sniffed at

Was a terrible game to watch devoid of quality and the worry is that the injuries will have more impact on the season than the late winner.

Usual story, (bar the winner) solid in defence with Pears not having anything difficult to do and the centre backs excellent. Going forward, nowhere near enough quality. Cantwell isnt half as effective wide, Gueye did nothing bar the poor clearance leading to the winner, Ohashi works his socks off but has gone something stupid like 16 without a goal and that doesnt look like ending soon. ACD wasnt as effective but you see from the chance he fluffed the sort of opportunity that can come from having pace on the pitch, problem is when he tires we dont have anyone else.

Poor game but The Den is a tough place to go to. We didn't take care of the ball at all, and let them chip away at our armour for the entire game until it finally broke. A shame that Trav had to limp off and we went down to ten men. Looked quite solid defending still but in the end we deserved to lose. We've had lady luck on our side on the run that just ended, so today was more about back to normal than anything.

I said to my son before the kick off I wouldn’t have started with that team. Ohashi and Gueye up front together meant the midfield would have their hands full. We started off poorly and let them build confidence. The first half was as bad a half as I can remember. We were second to too many balls and we were getting out muscled all over the pitch. We got sucked into an ale house football battle. Travis getting booked early on didn’t help in that respect. Second half wasn’t much better but at least we created two guilt edged chances. I thought we’d just about done enough to get a point but the subs let us down, Dolan in particular.

Bottom line - We were outenthused again today.

Scores-

Pears 7 - Made some good saves but I need to see the goal back, I’m never happy with conceding headed goals from in and around the 6 yard box.
JRC 6 - I thought he got better as the game went on but didn’t get forward enough.

Hyam  7 -  Defended stoutly under a ton of pressure.

Batth 8* - A colossus under tremendous pressure hardly put a foot wrong

Pickering 6- See JRC, could be missing for a while now.

ACD 5 - From hero to zero. Missed a really guilt edged chance, no awareness of what was going on around him. Consistently out muscled today. A boy playing against men.

Travis 7 - Did his best until his injury. The early booking handicapped him, his injury must be bad for him not to attempt to continue.

Tronstad 6- His usual tidy self but never got over the half way line.

Cantwell 5- Really poor today, he obviously didn’t fancy it. I’d have subbed him off at half time.

Gueye 5- Nobody knows what he’s going to do next, possibly because he doesn’t.

Ohashi 6 - Never stopped running as usual. I thought he was a bit unlucky with the bounce for the chance he had.

Subs

Dolan 5- Really poor effort. Caused us more trouble than he did Millwall.

Beck 7 - The usual all out effort from the lad.

Weimann 5 - Ineffectual.

Hedges 5 - Ineffectual, should have taken the shot instead of passing to Weimann.

Disappointing to lose so late on, but I’d like to pay tribute to the 1300 fans that made the trip today.

Hero’s everyone of you, a few days before Christmas, you’re a credit to the club, superb following and safe trip home.
