Old Codger Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Common sense (which of course I acknowledge is a figment of my imagination) tells us that we are unlikely to win this game, with key players out, a lack of guile and composure in front of goal, a very limited midfield, creative players (Cantwell and Buckley, ACD) missing in action, low firepower and great uncertainty off the pitch to undermine confidence. Sod that though, as we all know that to rely on common sense makes no sense. What we can expect perhaps is a committed rear guard, a dogged display and perhaps a goal or two at either end. A lot will hinge on whether Brittain can reprise any of the recent form and ability to ping dangerous balls into the opposition area, plus of course whether Big Mak is feeling motivated and has his shooting boots on. Games like this have a habit of springing surprises, and like most on here, I think it may well be a nasty one with a bump back to reality for Rovers fans. A defining game for the rest of the season, perhaps? joey_big_nose Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I missed the oxford game on the weekend but watched it back on Rovers player. The chink of light in it was how good Buckley was. Back to his best. He gets pigeon holed as a deep lying playmaker but hes far better playing box to box. Seemed like he had totally different instructions from his previous couple of games, instead getting forward at every opportunity. We need to build around that. Id still go 3 at the back but maybe change go for a 352 over a 343 and play Dolan and Gueye as a two up front. Given how static Forshaw is maybe try and play JRC, Cantwell and Buckley as a three in the middle. Its hardly ideal but I think its probably our best bet. 2 Quote
CrouchingNunhiddenCucumber Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I know we're down to the bare bones, and the Venky cunts have slowly fucked us over the last 15 painful years, but we can't go as low as losing to Frank fucking Lampard, can we? 3 Quote

Already lost to a Wayne Rooney side this season, so I would say yes, anything is possible with this lot. I don't think we will lose tonight though. Edited January 21 by MarkBRFC 2 Quote

Hasta Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I don't know why but I have a feeling we will win this. Coventry will come and be quite cautious so the midfield won't get exposed too badly. Away at Bristol City on a big pitch on Saturday will be a very different story. Quote

booth Posted January 21 Posted January 21 We've got both our midfielders out, a striker and three defenders. Getting something from this game will be a bonus. There's always a chance with Coventry's form, but it is better than ours currently. I'm not sure how that's going against my team as Chaddy said, it's called discussion, we aren't playing the game ourselves. Us deluding ourselves any differently isn't going to get Ryan Hedges to play any better, Mak to become the new Alan Shearer or Forshaw to grow a pair of legs that works. Obviously I want us to win even though I think we'll struggle. Quote
Wheelton Blue Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I'm deludedly going to predict a 2-0 loss. Losing Tronstad is a step too far for this squad. 1 Quote

Agreed, I think the added time Buckley has in a deep role affects his decision making, in a sense of he has too many options, dithers and either loses it or makes the wrong decision. When he's further forward and with less time/space he's much more reactive and effective. I think we will definitely go to a 3 back tonight, it's just a matter of what midfield looks like which could be realistically be any 2 from the 4 of Buckley, JRC, Forshaw and Garrett. I reckon we will end up with a formation that looks something like Tuchels' 3-4-2-1 Quote
WacoRover Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I know our record isn’t great vs teams in the bottom half, but it’s at Ewood & Eustace’s lads are playing great defense. I’ve got to say 2-1. I will be the most surprised poster here if that happens. Quote

oneandycrawford Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Re Chaddy's post. Predicting a loss isn't going against your team. It's a reasoned view based on knowledge and gut feelings. I might predict we'll win, draw or lose a particular game.. Doesn't make me any less disappointed if we lose a match I've predicted we'll lose against one where I've a predicted a win. But does allow me to put results into perspective. Am I more disappointed by a home loss to Hull vs an away loss to Sheffield Utd? No. Am I more surprised and therefore concerned about the impact on our season. Yes. I once did a full season prediction of all games in Rovers division. At end of season my prediction was 5 points and one position out for Rovers vs the actual results. Quite impressive (I thought!) until you look at the individual results where I was less than 40% accurate on win/lose/draw! Just goes to show how hard it is to predict results for any teams other than the truly outstanding or truly terrible. 3 Quote
