New manager wishlist

Recommended Posts

I think Gary O'Neil will have a good management career. He's not Prem ready yet, but not many young managers are. He's bright, tells it like it is and did good things with Wolves last year. He tried to change things this year (after having some key players sold) but it didn't work. Hopefully he's learned from that. I'd be happy with him.

Rob Edwards might suit our players, I think his style would suit Gueye because he had similar forwards at Luton. He could hit the ground running, which is what we need for this season. Question marks over his long-term suitability though. Similar with Cooper really. The Forest squad that he got promoted was made up of loans and short-term signings that he galvanised into a team, so again he'd be in familiar territory with us.

Carsley feels like a huge risk. Under 21 football has no bearing on this level and his style is very modern, similar to JDT's. I am not sure our squad are up to it and it's too late in the season to overhaul our playing style. Asking him to make a big step up and play a completely different style to what has made him successful so far feels like we'd be writing this season off. If he's seen as the long-term answer, agreeing on something for the summer and getting a Warnock/Allardyce figure in for the remainder of this one feels like a safer option.

Russell Martin would be a good long-term choice, but again, not suited to this current squad and would involve writing off this season for a longer term project.

Heard a rumour that it’s Ryan Lowe, with David Lowe staying on and Jason Lowe coming in as coach

How Lowe can we go?

Would that form the “Lowely Trinity”?

Jokes aside - please god noooooo

One thing is for sure, after last nights performance I reckon there might be a few more managers CV’s on Swags desk this morning!

Genuinely, if you were an ambitious manager watching last night, bearing in mind the context, player sales, low budgets, a departing manager….you’re thinking “FUCK, this a great set of lads. 5th with 14 games to go and the resilience to do that to West Brom on a cold Wedneaday night? Where do I sign?”

Contrary to the opinions of some in here, I think we’ve actually chose managers well over the last few years. Fingers crossed we can do it again!

Nixon's article;

Richie Wellens has joined the short list for the Blackburn Rovers vacancy.

The Leyton Orient chief has caught the eye with a promotion run in League One and in a gutsy FA Cup run.

Wellens knows the north west well and has added to his experience since cutting his teeth at clubs like Doncaster, Oldham and Salford.

Rovers want a quick replacement for John Eustace and have been compiling a list of alternatives.

Wellens comes with a low compensation figure and his salary demands would also be within their capabilities.

Gary O'Neil is well supported at Ewood Park if he is keen. Coincidentally he is represented by the same agency as Eustace.

Other foreign coaches have been sounded out and interviews may be set up fast.

David Lowe took caretaker charge for the win at West Brom, a result that takes the heat off the Plymouth game on Saturday

There was a time when we head hunted a stream of excellent managers from the lower reaches of the leagues. Jim Smith, Ken Furphy and Gordon Lee. They’d come up the hard way and knew how to get the best out of a mixed bunch of players.

Wellens is going really well at Orient,

Gary O'Neil is well supported at Ewood Park? Who has he asked? Dick.

And yes, managing Doncaster, Oldham and Salford before 'having a good go' against Man City in a game on TV last week automatically qualifies a lower league manager to manage England's 10th most successful football club, do one Nixon you absolute prat

The thing that concerns me about someone like Wellens is that whilst he has done very well at Orient it is just totally incomparable to here.

At Orient he's been able to build them up from League Two, good backing from their owner, assembled a squad and style of play, built up momentum over the last couple of years.

None of that relevant to us under these owners - he won't get backing, he won't get opportunity to assemble a squad, and most importantly we aren't looking for that between now and May in any event.

Richie wellens would be a good appointment.  He's done wonders at Leyton orient. We don't need a big name manager, just someone who knows what they're doing

I have to disagree on this. We have 14 games and a massive opportunity which we might not get again for years. We need someone who would hit the ground running, not an up and comer, an experiment or a project.

Edit - the ideal scenario would be someone who has been in this position recently and knows what buttons to press at the right time. So for me that would be a Steve Cooper or someone similar, but we know he's probably beyond budget

Had a very quick look on Wiki, and it seems he left Doncaster in 23rd of whatever division they were in the job before that.

Would be an incredibly uninspiring appointment.  imo.

We need a manager who plays a similar way. Someone who can knit the players together and continue with the unity that we’ve seen in the Squad. For me the best for that would be Cooper or Edwards. I would imagine either would fancy it with us in the top 5. It’s a free hit for a manager. Get us promoted and they are a hero, fail and the majority of the fans will rightly blame the shit show behind the scenes.

I agree, I'm certain I'm going to be underwhelmed with the appointment. My other response was nothing personal, I just think Wellens would be a rubbish appointment, would send the wrong signal to the squad and the fanbase about our short term and long term ambitions.

He has been around the block in the lower leagues so to speak and has had a purple patch at Orient who seem a well resourced and organised club at L1/L2 recently.

I think he would be a short-lived disaster at Brockhall

(I always want to be proved wrong with my pessimism)

Think a lot of this post makes sense - until the last paragraph! What on earth makes you think RM would be a good choice. He was mediocre (at best) at MK Dons and Swansea and then managed to get Southampton to limp over the line for promotion. It's fine having a philosophy but you have to adapt to circumstances when it isn't working or you don't have the players to match that philosophy.

Look at City now - Pep is struggling to manage the decline of his squad whilst maintaining his style of play but even he has adapted that style a bit to get the best out of Haaland. City go long ball much more now than they used to so that Haaland's strengths can be used.

RM's arrogance seems to mean he can't / won't do that. His style would require a complete rebuild of our current squad.
