New manager wishlist

I agree, I'm certain I'm going to be overwhelmed with the appointment. My other response was nothing personal, I just think Wellens would be a rubbish appointment, would send the wrong signal to the squad and the fanbase about our short term and long term ambitions.

He has been around the block in the lower leagues so to speak and has had a purple patch at Orient who seem a well resourced and organised club at L1/L2 recently.

I think he would be a short-lived disaster at Brockhall

(I always want to be proved wrong with my pessimism)

I agree. I don't take it personally.  Having looked at his previous record it isn't inspiring.  I just don't think any top manager would see working under venkys would be viable.  We will probably end up with a dud

On the manager search, it's a really strange position for the next guy. Usually you get the gig either in the summer when you've got time to work with your squad on styles of play etc, or you're walking into a relegation battle shitshow where you seriously need to change things to get results.

The worst thing anyone can do here is to start ripping up the previous manager's coaching manual. That's why, for me, it either has to be your old school, pragmatic type (Warnock, Big Sam etc) or someone who's teams play in a similar vein (eg Edwards) - not that RE would be my first choice normally.

It's a very tough one this time around and one which we need to get right to maintain our league position. Unfortunately, we've got the Chuckle Brothers & Frank Spencer making these decisions! (I'll let you decide who you think is who!🤣)

Whoever it will be, it needs to be someone who doesn't come in and rock the boat so to speak. Looking at last night, regardless of what we think of David Lowe, Damien Johnson, etc, the players clearly like these guys and enjoy working with them....otherwise you don't get the kind of performance and result away at a playoff rival side as we saw last night.

The biggest worry is that Gestede gives someone like Karanka a call. Middlesbrough promotion aside (which happened nearly 10 years ago), he's been a failure everywhere he's been, and I think being a student of Mourinho he is likely to upset players more than bringing them closer together.

This group need someone similar to Eustace in terms of showing that mentality of togetherness and resilience. No drastic changes are required on the coaching side.

Think a lot of this post makes sense - until the last paragraph! What on earth makes you think RM would be a good choice. He was mediocre (at best) at MK Dons and Swansea and then managed to get Southampton to limp over the line for promotion. It's fine having a philosophy but you have to adapt to circumstances when it isn't working or you don't have the players to match that philosophy.

Look at City now - Pep is struggling to manage the decline of his squad whilst maintaining his style of play but even he has adapted that style a bit to get the best out of Haaland. City go long ball much more now than they used to so that Haaland's strengths can be used.

RM's arrogance seems to mean he can't / won't do that. His style would require a complete rebuild of our current squad.

Fair enough! I just put him in as an afterthought because he was high up on the betting list. I did mean it to read like he's not the man for appointing now, but in other circumstances, I wouldn't be against it. To be honest, I don't know much about him other than he got Southampton promoted and his style of play. I was a big fan of JDT and I am a fan of managers that play in that style in general, hence a relatively positive appraisal!

I think Gary O'Neil will have a good management career. He's not Prem ready yet, but not many young managers are. He's bright, tells it like it is and did good things with Wolves last year. He tried to change things this year (after having some key players sold) but it didn't work. Hopefully he's learned from that. I'd be happy with him.

Rob Edwards might suit our players, I think his style would suit Gueye because he had similar forwards at Luton. He could hit the ground running, which is what we need for this season. Question marks over his long-term suitability though. Similar with Cooper really. The Forest squad that he got promoted was made up of loans and short-term signings that he galvanised into a team, so again he'd be in familiar territory with us.

Carsley feels like a huge risk. Under 21 football has no bearing on this level and his style is very modern, similar to JDT's. I am not sure our squad are up to it and it's too late in the season to overhaul our playing style. Asking him to make a big step up and play a completely different style to what has made him successful so far feels like we'd be writing this season off. If he's seen as the long-term answer, agreeing on something for the summer and getting a Warnock/Allardyce figure in for the remainder of this one feels like a safer option.

Russell Martin would be a good long-term choice, but again, not suited to this current squad and would involve writing off this season for a longer term project.

There isn't enough hair dye in East Lancashire to keep Martin and Waggott going.

😂

You need big bucks to play keep ball and get out of this league. We haven’t got big bucks

New shirt sponsor…?

Now that's proper old school! I bet there's a lot on here who've no idea what that is. 🤣

(Just for the youngsters, it's essentially the 'original' Just for Men)

Edit: OMG! Just Googled it & can't believe it's still on sale!

Let's run through the list of candidates everyone keeps knocking about:

Allardyce: I think there's too much politically from his departure in 2010 to stop him returning.

Warnock: "One last job" sounds tempting and you'd just see how it went til the summer and enjoy his personality.

Edwards/Dyche: Would any of them want to come to Rovers in this mess? You may convince them on a six month contract but surely they'd want a viable long term project - which Rovers isn't.

O'Neil: Seemed to do a good job at Bournemouth but stock low after Wolves.

Carsley: Decent record with the FA but limited experience at club management.

The other names I am just not sure about.

We do need someone with some "oomph" just to give it a go for 14 games (probably 13 now) and motivate the players.

I am seriously doubtful the Play Off dream won't be done within a month - regardless of who is appointed. I just don't think the squad has enough in the tank. Remember, we're on a high rn after WBA, the narrative can *very* easily change.

To be clear, not saying I want him at all, just that there’s a lot of noise about it on social media. That being said I also saw a post praising Waggott and Venky’s for so many good signings in the window….

My first choice remains Sam, have a feeling Carsley will definitely be high up the list given his track record with youth players and the fact we’re most likely going to be relying on ours more and more the next few seasons as it stands.

Oh don't worry, I knew that. I was talking about the social media buzz. Some very limited minds on there. If anything I thought you were probably criticising the notion.

Limited minds you say?

A few there suggesting he is given the job for the rest of the season

Another way of looking at is there’s a lot of shite in this league from 5th down. We have a lot of extra bodies now (I won’t opine on quality) with a couple to come back from injury. I’m not saying we will make the playoffs but last night showed there’s nothing to fear from the teams around us.

Whether or not we’d just get pumped over 2 legs by whoever finishes third is another debate…

Our only hope is convincing a stud to sign a 6 month contract until the summer. I don't have a name for you, but someone that could drag us over the line and get us into the Playoffs and potentially up into the Premier League.

If we don't get promoted this year I think the future is very bleak indeed and no manager worth their salt will want to be in charge.

Yep, slim chance of promotion (Sunderland and Burnley are clearly a cut above). Then once the summer comes, the squad gets broken up, no money, odds on to get relegated. 🙃

Well considering we've played Burnley and Sunderland close this season (should have beaten both) I've no fear.

If it was Sheffield United or a motivated Leeds United though I'd be slightly more concerned.

Over the course of a season with their deeper squads, yes. In a two leg shoot out? Not so much.
