In my opinion, if there was a clear and obvious (and cheap) option, it is likely Derby would have taken that rather than pay us £750k for Eustace.

So not surprising to see the split in opinion between us all on who would be our best option as a replacement.

This is a much more appealing job than Derby.

Derby might be more stable, but you're headed into a relegation fight. Take Gerrard, for example, no chance he would risk having a relegation from the Championship on his CV and have yet another setback to his managerial career.

We're almost the perfect job to jump into for 6 months. If you can come here and get us promoted then you look like a real hero. Yes, we were in the playoffs when you joined, but we were on the slide and we weren't promotion favourites by any stretch.

Miss out on the playoffs? Just blame the mess behind the scenes.

His main 2 staff was Gary McAlistar and Tom Clushaw at Villa and Rangers. Critchley joined him at Villa as first team coach and Beale was first team coach at Rangers and number 2 in Saudi. He has Ian Foster and Dean Holden as his number 2 also out in Saudi

Ok, I stand corrected.

Them two, then 🙂

Out of interest, whilst on my lunch break, a quick look at the poll list candidates win rate (%) Excluding caretaker roles.

Only included Allardyce' last two roles as I don't think he'd really be under consideration and don't have time to include all of his jobs!. Included our last three managers for comparison.

Aitor Karanka (Middlesbrough) 46.80

Richie Wellens (Leyton Orient) 45.86

Rob Edwards (Forest Green Rovers) 45.28

Jon Dahl Tomasson (Blackburn Rovers) 44.44

Ryan Lowe (Plymouth Argyle) 42.97

Ryan Lowe (Bury) 42.67

Richie Wellens (Swindon Town) 42.17

Tony Mowbray (Blackburn Rovers) 40.45

Ryan Lowe (Preston North End) 37.60

Richie Wellens (Salford City) 36.67

John Eustace (Blackburn Rovers) 34.62

Richie Wellens (Oldham Athletic) 32.56

Steven Gerrard (Aston Villa) 32.5

Gary O'Neil (Wolverhampton Wanderers) 31.75

Aitor Karanka (Nottingham Forest) 30.80

Rob Edwards (Luton Town) 30.77

Gary O'Neil (Bournemouth) 29.73

Rob Edwards (Watford) 27.27

Richie Wellens (Doncaster Rovers) 23.08

Aitor Karanka (Birmingham City) 21.10

Sam Allardyce (West Bromich Albion) 15.40

Sam Allardyce (Leeds United) 0.0

Because the options are so underwhelming that such futile points are put forward to support one of a pretty poor set of potential downgrades on Eustace, as I listed above.

They not underwhelming but they are very few British based head coaches who are stand out candidate cos each one has their success and failure.

I would look towards the foreign market and bring in head coach from overseas. Someone who is similar style to Eustace who will well organised the team, understand that not alot need to be change tactical or style way.

Nothing will happen, we will appoint someone sub par, the season will fizzle out, the issues will remain but things will stay the same.

well the last 3 appointments have all been good haven't they?

why will the season fizzle out? we 5th in the league. You acted like we are 8th or 9th. You dismissed the team picked on Wednesday as "Rubbish team." and "Comfortable home win." Just how wrong you were and this set of players and coaches proved you wrong didn't there. Rovers players and coaches were motivated and ready for Wednesday game so why not the same for tomorrow and Saturday game?

Gerrard in to 3/1 fav on SkyBet!

Not that I think you should read too much into it as O'Neil, Carsley and now Gerrard have all been favourite at some stage over the past few days.

I wonder if he has apply for the job?

Danny Murphy to thank for that.

Think they have taken that his comments over the last 24 hours and ran with it.

I'm not confident about much with this club, but pretty sure it won' be Gerrard.

I don’t really fancy any of the linked candidates and never really been a fan of Stevie G but I just wonder, if it might work for both on a short term basis. Play off / promotion opportunity and a very handy come back for him, easy commute, historic club and as short term, wages probably the least of his priorities.

I don’t think anyone is advocating giving David Lowe a 3-year contract, but I can see advantages in not rushing the appointment.

The biggest thing we have going for us now is a dressing room united in their anger at the narrative that John Eustace alone got them into the top 6 and John Eustace doesn’t think they can stay there.

I think that anger can get us into the playoffs and the best way to puncture that balloon right now is to bring in a different voice saying different things.

You speak as if nothing is wrong. Our head coach who was doing great has just left us to join a team that could go down. We have 11 points from 12 games. Weve a squad full of short term contracts and all of our best players see their contracts expire next year.

The performance and result on Wednesday did surprise me, Eustace's coaches had set up the team on Monday and obviously the players had a seige mentality and showed great character directly after what has unfolded. I dont think we csn sustain that purely on that feeling.

These options being put forward are underwhelming. The reason your supposed short list has about 10 names on it is because even you know none of them stand out as a particularly good choice. One of them you want because he lives local and another after reading a couple of articles online, that tells you a lot.

I don't know how many more shots we will have at promotion - at least until Venkys are gone - and I don't want to be sat in the summer thinking we wasted one by having Lowe take charge of the side for the final few months. He has no experience as a manager and this is a big step up.

He's the perfect short-term caretaker and a nice figure to the keep in the coaching staff to maintain some continuity, but I don't want to see him actually managing the side for anything more than a couple of fixtures.

Seems unusual not to have Lowe as caretaker to the end of the season and then see from there as an option in the poll. Caretaker to permanent was the only option. I had clicked Carsley as my choice (it still is irl) but can't believe the likes of Warnock would be chosen above seeing the season out with someone who knows and who has coached the players under the system we are currently playing. So I've clicked David Lowe permanent to give him a boost in case he ever looked

The thing I find funny is loads of supporters were not to happy when it was Lowe on the touchline on Tuesday. He was getting all sorts said about him now after 1 win there seems to be quite a few fans saying we should give it to him until the end of the season

We shouldn't be giving it to Lowe

Absolutely.  Would be a shocking decision.  His interview after the game put me to sleep. The players were clearly playing for themselves.  I doubt lowe had any hard in it. Would be typical Waggott to go for someone who doesn't rock the boat after the last two managers. I don't mind him taking tomorrow but after that Waggott and suhail need to pull their fingers out

If there’s a delay in making the permanent appointment, and Lowe picks up a few more wins, then maybe at that point the case for him to get it until the end of the season will carry more weight.
As good a win as it was, it’s only one game, and I get the feeling it was inspired more by the motivation and determination of the players, than by Lowe.

Tinfoil hats at the ready. I suspect Wellens is being considered because of the contract situation with many players. They'll let them run down, or be sold on the cheap, and Wellens will be ok with that, as this is the highest level he has managed.

Then, when we are relegated, he'll replace them with 3rd/4th tier standard players who have a lower wage. Wellens will get a couple of seasons as 'he knows the league'.

All part of the dumbing down of the club.
