The Premier League is so, so much better than the Championship. Wolves are a poor PL side and not a single one of our players would get in their starting XI.

I'm not blown away by O'Neill but he seems the obvious choice. If we did what most of us expected and spent most of the season in or around the relegation places we would have no chance of bringing him in so hopefully we take the opportunity to give ourselves the best chance this season and next. Sticking with Lowe is something that I wouldn't want, if we didn't achieve promotion then imagine how bleak the candidates would be, so we need to strike now.

The current Bournemouth manager's stats aren't much better than o'neil's with a win ratio of 31 percent compared to O'Neil with 29 percent having spent much more money

He is one of the least worst options being floated, I still have difficulty seeing past the financial considerations.

I wouldnt be overly keen on O'Neil. His sides regularly had issues defending set pieces and holding on to leads. We also saw regular discipline breaches at Wolves. At Bournemouth, they obviously replaced him with an incredibly talented manager so the improvement since is more a reflection on how good Iraola is. But at Wolves, considering the talk of player sales etc, his replacement managed to exceed O'Neil's point tally this season in half the number of games.

Its not just me being negative. I have actually aired my views on him in the Premier League thread in the past when he was at Wolves.

Of course, with the likes of Boateng and Boa Morte mentioned, it very nicely makes it seem like a pleasant upgrade in comparison.

Saying that, it is very much speculation and the market is so volatile to change so I dont know if he is actually likely to come.

That is an excellent point, Gerrard being here could just blow the lid off the mystery that is the Venkies.  Would certainley attract attention and for sure if he pulled a Eustace or JDT the coverage would be quite widespread and thorough one might think due to it being Stevie G.

Gary O'Neil, former Boro player. He was there from 2007-11. Him and Boateng were teammates at Boro for one season in the 2007/08 campaign.

If O'Neil is their main target, that could explain Boateng being touted as a number two here. It might just be speculation for now, but there is a Boro theme showing itself in the links.

Just a hunch, but I'm expecting, after going round the houses with various names and whispers about 150 applicants, (Yeah, right) for it to end with Karanka. If it's somebody that nobody has mentioned nor has appeared in these lists, it will come as a surprise to me.

If it came down to a choice between the two, I'd be picking O'Neil all day long ahead of a Karanka. The latter is a k#&! and would change things too much. O'Neil has shown recently to have Premier League pedigree and that's exactly what our club has (minus those upstairs).

Where did you read that? He is like 40%, won 25/63 matches. I would be happy with O Neill, I think he is an outstanding young manager.

According to TransferMarket they spent £75m in the summer, after selling Neto and Kilman for £60m & £50m respectively.

I don't know how it works at Wolves with regards to signings and perhaps the signings they made were just poor which is why he struggled, but to say they spent no money isn't quite right, although admittedly, we are in the Premier League and what does £75m but you these days? (Madness that I'm even saying that)

Every week they delay appointing someone is one less weeks wages they need to pay. Penny pinching even now.

David Lowe is currently in that area where your boss leaves and senior management tell you that if you do a good job you might get that pay rise.

However good O'Neil might be, it is extremely unlikely that he would get another premiership job as things stand.

His route back to the top flight would be promotion. He is young and probably desperate to get back in the game. The appointment of our two previous managers shows that even our bizarre set up doesn't necessarily override their desire to be in employment at all costs.

 He doesn't need to do much as our style of play is well drilled and suits the division- thanks to Eustace. 

I think he would be great here.

If it is O'Neill then

1) Surely he will have nailed conditions for financing the club after his personal experience at Wolves and knowing the way JDT and JE departed. His appointment OUGHT to signal good news on the club getting serious about contracts again and he would be a wuss to take the job otherwise.

2) If we get into the PL, he is as good a bet as anyone to pull off the nigh impossible and keep us up.

I still expect some relative unknown non-British manager to be revealed who is desperate to get a gig over here.

Can't help thinking that one of the positives to come out of JE leaving is that the next manager must (and it has to be a guarantee) receive reassurances of funding or at least some indication of direction. You simply wouldn't take the job on otherwise - particularly as we are seemingly looking at managers with a track record. Whether the ownership keep to reassurances is very dubious...

If they do their research they'll find that Venkys, or more likely Suhail, will happily renege on any agreement

This could also work the other way and we get someone crap/cheap who is willing to work without a budget….
