New manager wishlist

Recommended Posts

From a new managers perspective there is certain things they know.

  • the last two managers have walked out on the club.
  • The owners do not speak to you.
  • The owners are not investing into the club themselves
  • You will have to sell and play with a majority of loans and short term deals. Small transfer fees allowed.
  • You report to 4 people, maybe 2, maybe 1.
  • The club has not protected its value by not renewing contracts in over 12 months. What does this suggest?

From a players perspective, it’s the same as the above. The next three months are critical. Do the players really want to do this every year? Especially are better players.

The club has known for at least 12 days that we will need a manager. “Finding the right one” isn’t an excuse to be slow. They obviously didn’t have someone in mind, but any potential good manager would have to stay clear considering the problems coming down the line with lack of investment and contracts. A foreign coach who knows their reputation will be fine or a lower league manager will take the risk.

One interesting name that hasn't been mentioned at all is David Wagner. Were at Norwich last year and got sacked following a playoff semifinal defeat against Leeds which I found very harsh. Has experience with Huddersfield when it comes to achieving promotion to PL. Would be a cheap but quite a good appointment in my opinion.

I really can’t see a German manager galvanising this team for a 13 game promotion push.

2022:

Was JDT one of the favourites for the job? No.

Did I think he was the right appointment:

No.

Turned out pretty well.

2024:

(Appointed quickly so no real betting market)

Did I think he was the right appointment?

No.

Turned out pretty well.

I'm not paying too much attention to the favourites with the bookies at this stage.

Touche` Sir.

Who WOULD be your choice? Its easy to dismiss individual candidates.

😀

I understand where you are coming from. I think that there has to be a decent manager somewhere inside Gerrard. He led Rangers to a title and an unbeaten season. That's not easy, even discounting that it was in Scotland. However, since then he's not been good. Boring at Villa, then an inexplicable move to a Saudi team without the might of PIF money that ended with a shrug. He needs to resurrect himself and what better chance to do that than getting Rovers promoted.

My choices; Jurgen Klopp then Alan Shearer.

Based on this list I'd take Gary O'Neil.

Lee Carsley - 7/4

Gary O'Neil - 6/1

Rob Edwards - 7/1

David Lowe - 10/1

Ryan Lowe - 10/1

Richie Wellens - 12/1

Aitor Karanka - 15/1

Valerien Ismael - 22/1

Carlos Carvalhal - 25/1

Steve Cooper - 25/1

Turned out well? Relegation battle + falling out with most players

At which point were we in a relegation battle under JDT? We were in relegation form when he left, but he'd long clocked out by then.

Personally I'd look at his entire 18 months in charge rather than last few games when he couldn't wait to get out of here......

Nixon says 6 will be interviewed for the job, i'd guess that'll be the likes of...

- Gary O'Neil
- Richie Wellens
- Valerian Ismael
- Raphael Wicky
- Rob Edwards
- Aitor Karanka

I'm not a betting man, but would stick a cheeky few quid on one of those becoming our new head coach... whichever is the cheapest, probably!

I agree with 3 down to 6 but can't see O'Neil or Wellens in the running.

O'Neil surely too expensive for us even if he'd gamble his career on coming here which I think would be a huge risk for him.

Wellens embroiled in a playoff push with Orient and would require compensation.  Can see both being hurdles we aren't able to overcome.

The other ones all unemployed and Edwards apart would struggle to get jobs in the Championship these days so probably realistic.

The only +ve that I have for Ismael is that he had an immediate positive impact at both Barnsley and West Brom taking over tough situations. At Barnsley they were struggling and he ended up getting them into the play-offs and at West Brom they had just been relegated yet for the first few months at least he had them up at the top of the league.

So perhaps there is some reason to think he might be able to come in and see us through to the end of the season.

There's no reason based on his CV to think he would be suitable beyond that. He's had a vast number of clubs and jobs and never lasted more than about a year. I can guarantee most of them will have been more stable and professional than Rovers.

Perhaps this is the new model - a Watfordesque turnover in head coaches who come in and 'do a job' for 6-12 months before their contracts expire, they resign and we get some compo and then we repeat it again. Suppose it stops any repeats of the JDT and Eustace debacles.

Did a great job at Barnsley and played at their strengths. His WBA stint was a bust though. They spent and was aiming for automatic promotion back but ended up mid-table before he was let go. He tried to replicate the Barnsley platform with direct football, but neither players nor fans bought into it.

Wouldn't say his manager record is poor, but think there must be better candidates out there.
