Rovers host Wigan Athletic on Monday night – a match which is being screened live on Sky Sports and it therefore brings back memories of a couple of huge low points in the club’s recent history. Can Rovers bring some good times on a Monday night against bottom-of-the-table Latics?

It was Monday 23rd December 2019 when Bradley Dack suffered in first serious knee injury which ruled him out for over a year. With Dack now back to full fitness and form, he will more than anyone be wanting to put on a good performance.

Curiously, the two teams were in practically identical positions in the table before that match as they are now: Rovers just outside the play-off positions and Wigan rock bottom. Despite an excellent run of five wins from six in the lead up to the match in 2019, the result was a dour goalless draw.

Monday 7th May 2012 provided one of the worst nights in the club’s history. That was the rain-soaked night when relegation from the Premier League was confirmed. Antolín Alcaraz scored a late header to secure Wigan’s safety – the chicken on the pitch got the only cheer of the day as vitriol poured from the stands.

One man who played in 2012 will be at Ewood – Paul Robinson. He would appear to be attending as a pundit for Sky Sports.

Busy weekend. At Newcastle West Ham tonight. Down to Spurs vs. City tomorrow. And back up north to Blackburn for Wigan on Monday.

On the back of a disgraceful and tumultuous ten days – which has seen racism at the Birmingham match and the debacle of transfer deadline day – it’s vitally important that Rovers put on a convincing display and also break that Wigan curse.
