Huge credit to Lars Bjering Husum from The English Football Record for putting together the incredible statistical record below. We’ve highlighted the six appearances of Rovers in bold.
Strangely enough, our first-ever match against Accrington in September 1888 contributes to the joint record number of three 5-5 draws. The others came at home to Arsenal (November 1962) and at Birmingham City (April 1965).
Rovers and Wolves share the honour of the most 9-1 victories in history. Rovers wins have come against Notts County (November 1889), Small Heath (January 1895) and Nottingham Forest (April 1937).
Conversely, the two 5-2 defeats in the inaugural Premier League season (1992/93) help to ensure an unwanted title under that scoreline with a total of 29 losses in the history books.
Rovers are also one of just three teams to have lost a match 8-5!
In all, 113 different scorelines have been achieved in more than 135 years of league football (when considering, for example, winning 12-2 being different from losing 2-12). Before the start of the 2024/25 season, the following clubs have achieved the most of these scorelines:
