Season: 2022/23
Fixture: Leicester City 1-2 Rovers – FA Cup 5th Round – 28/2/23
Highlights
Why Chosen
The zenith of the Jon Dahl Tomasson era as Rovers (without Bradley Dack and talisman Ben Brereton Diaz) surprised the footballing world with not just a smash and grab away cup victory, but for 75 minutes a dominant display. The win came in a run of 6 wins out of 7 in February/March 2023 as Tomasson’s men overcame the so called “February Curse”.
Aftermath
The victory setup a mouth-watering quarter-final away at Sheffield United, but late drama in South Yorkshire saw Rovers throw away a 2-1 lead to sink to a stoppage time loss. The Wembley arch remains out of reach for Rovers fans. The season would also fall at the final hurdle as just one win in the remaining nine league matches (at Millwall on the last day) saw Rovers miss out on the playoffs on goal difference.
Honourable Mentions
Burnley 3-0 Rovers (13/11/22) – The first chink in JDT’s armour, result looks worse the more time that passes.
Rovers 1-4 Preston (10/12/22) – Same day as France v England in the World Cup quarter-final. Odd feeling, snowy and dismal performance, waited a month for that?
Milwall 3-4 Rovers (8/5/23) – Too little too late for Rovers, who dragged Millwall out of the playoff places with them. Adios y gracias Señor Brereton.
