v Cambridge Utd (h) - 06/01/24 FA Cup R3
booth replied to Upside Down's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
I don't believe it does, with a 5-2 final scoreline it objectively does. I understand the frustration. When the second goal went in I was pissed off but perspective needed, there was a long way to go in the game and Cambridge are a poor L1 team. I wasn't going to slate Pickering and Wahlstedt (I felt like it!) as with a proper chairmen and owners they wouldn't be in the first team, they are what they are. I'm also not going to slate the manager or coaches because they aren't working in ideal circumstances. It's clear we're struggling with a defense that has been neglected for a long time and having keeper troubles, and of course morale must be low. The ones who should be getting any grief is Venkys and their Ewood mouthpiece. Venkys out. -

Still knee jerk to be slating everyone at Ewood 6 minutes in against a L1 side. Doesn’t the result prove that? As I said with certain players in the team it’s expected to have a terrible defence at any level. Since Mowbray post L1 we’ve neglected the defence year after year. -

Some knee jerk reactions on here early on, blimey. Pickering poor and with Wahlstedt in goal we’re always going to concede. Thank goodness for SS! Disappointed Gilsenan didn’t get a chance. Hope he’s not injured. -

Not sure about Chrisene but the Coventry fans say the other lad is technically gifted but too light weight for the Championship. If that’s true we’re just taking anyone available that’s cheap enough. We’ve got enough players unsuited to the Championship. -
He's on the bench every match. I imagine if JDT and Remy go, he'll be caretaker.

It's not just experience, it's also injuries and poor players. Currently we have a poor defence. With a fit Hyam and JRC we'd be doing better but would still have frailties. It'd be easier to carry some of the poorer players if there was more quality alongside them. If we'd have added Danny Baath and decent fullback we'd have actually had a good defence for the first time in a while. And of course a decent goalie, we'd be 2 points better of after today's match if we had. -

In contrast we may be buying a 20 year old CB along with a 20 year old full back on loan. I imagine we'll be signing a 20 year old striking sensation from some foreign second tier as well. And all these 20 year olds will keep making mistakes till we're in the third tier. -

And rightly so, they have fucked him over. -
I think the only one they've ever really sacked was Bowyer.
-
Exactly. Madame Desai said after Allardyce's sacking. “We want good football and Blackburn to be fourth or fifth in the league or even better. The fans should trust us because this is in the best interests of the club.”

Whilst I agree the defending should be better we should have been out of sight by the time they scored. And it's not the first game we would have benefitted from a striker being on the pitch. Also an older player, like a Danny Graham type holding up the ball would take a lot of pressure off the defence and make a big difference. Going back to the defending, I've never been convinced by Pickering and I don't think Brittain is a very good full back. Add to that the inexperience of Hill and Carter and a goalie that throws one in at least one per game and conceding two isn't surprising. -

Unfair to say as apart from the first transfer window he's had nothing much to spend. In that he brought us Szmodics and Hyam. Beyond that Tronstadt looks a good Championship midfielder and Siggy contributes goals. As I've said before, Wahlstedt is a massive clanger. You'd expect there to be better keepers about. We seem to have added another keeper who is a total liability and today despite everything we've lost another 2 points as a result. If it was up to me I'd do away with DOF model altogether, I've never liked it since Kenny and Harford. I like a manager to bring in the players he wants and to have an assistant who facilitates it. No excuses then. -

To whoever was defending Venkys on this thread (site crashes if I try to click on quotes so I can't reply). Fair enough if Venkys want to cut our cloth accordingly. They are pumping money in but have FFP and whatever their issue with the Indian government is. It sounds like excuses to me but I'll suspend my disbelief for arguments sake. However if they wanted to do it efficiently and sensibly why have Steve Waggott as our CEO who has made terrible decision after terrible decision in his time here? A man who hasn't prepped for the lack of money and instead allowed the appointment of staff more suited to a team vying for promotion? Because they are terrible terrible owners and it's always been the case. Venkys out. -

I didn't think we were gung ho today yet still conceded two. Which is why I don't think a change in tactics would alter anything. He is the wrong manager for the wrong job. When Mowbray left we should have been planning for this and recruiting management and players accordingly. Instead we brought a bloke in, told him the objective was to build a team with a view to promotion, and told him we had to play pretty football. Ludicrous. -

Is it really his fault if he's given barely a budget to work with? Wahstedt is looking a painfully bad signing though. How many points has that one signing cost us now? Bit of an exaggeration but he spent the family silver to do it too. -

Having no dangerous strikers in the squad gives the opposition less to think about. They can commit players forward knowing that our forwards are pretty much inert. Especially when Ennis came on. Keep Szmodics quiet and that's half the job done. Also today there were chances we should have put away before they got an equalizer. If we played more defensively, there's no way we'd have scored that many goals. But it's also no surprise we can't defend. Zero experience, injuries to three first teamers and our fullbacks can attack but aren't great at defending. And then there's the issue with fitness and us grinding out the last 10-15 with the bench we have. We won't do it bringing on players like Markanday and Ennis. -

Then direct your rage at Waggott, the bullshit merchant who knew the taps were being turned off but then allowed Broughton to bring in a manager on the pretence we were going to steadily build a decent side. It's never been the remit to play like men, or to have any ambition other than staying out of L1. And that's the kind of ambition that lands you in L1. -

Tried that loads of times. If anything it just expedites things. Ennis looks awful. I think our only battler was Tronstad. -

Just my opinion, but to my eyes we didn't look too bad today for a team with obvious deficiencies. We didn't win because we have a poor goalie and we didn't put away our chances. We also have two mediocre full backs who were huffing away at the 75 minute mark, both looking better going forwards than defending. Not signing an experienced defender, as JDT requested is also biting us massively in the arse. When we had a free option waiting to sign it looks even more ludicrous. Then you look at the bench and expecting any of them to come in and make a difference is always going to end in disappointment. Telalovic seemed to do the basics a lot better than Ennis and it's no surprise that we suffered when he went off. Despite that we still didn't look too open today. We're always going to concede in the last ten with the injuries we have and no one to come on to grind the game out. In any case, even if he adapts we seem to be stuck with a goalie who gives the opposition a goal head start every game. -

That's because that's where we're at. You'll keep hearing it till Venkys put their hands in their pocket or Gregg finds a barrel worth scraping. -

But asking a professional footballer not to cross the ball in that position is counter intuitive. It's not their fault we can't recruit anyone to get on the end of the balls they are putting in. Ennis should be putting himself about more but he looks like another pointless signing. Over the Christmas period, people were saying we were overpassing it too. -

Telalovic at least had some presence about him which made space for the other players going forward. I said at the time Ennis and Markanday were a downgrade compared to the players that went off. Ennis being the worst of the two but at times Markanday looked like he was trying to play on roller skates. -

I imagine because the players are in a position to cross and that's their only option? If you think crossing the ball in a football game is the problem then let's just agree to disagree on where the problems lie. -

We played well today until a handful of players were knackered and had to make some subs. Rotherham didn't deserve a point, but that's what happens when the taps get turned off and you have owners and their underlings who don't understand the rudimentary demands of a football team.
