I think that if the appeal is successful, he may be more lenient towards whoever made the mistake, so it'd be unfair to go into it prior to that. Or even just wording something verbally in a different way to a submitted appeal argument could affect the outcome of the appeal.

I don't think it's pedantry to avoid a misunderstanding. A statement condemning a racism incident, and condemning wider antisocial behaviour is absolutely fine. However, it is worded in such a way as to be easily misconstrued (deliberately, by the wrong people) as racism being a wider problem in our fanbase than it is. It might be pedantic, but that's just another way of saying it's right.
