Actually they won 1-0 at Southampton with Cole not playing. I like Dickov, but I'm with you in I don't think he's the solution at the position, but I don't think Cole was either. My hope is that for now, Gallagher and/or Bothroyd provide the solution as starters, either together or with Stead (assuming Gallagher gets and stays healthy). Then we can take the money we would have spent on Cole's wages and get a good young CM in January. I think Jay, despite that terrible cross he made, could do at least the job that Cole did for us, and hopefully better.

After watching the match last night, a few observations: I'm with those, such as USABlue, who weren't that upset by our performance. We showed EFFORT, which we have been known to lack in the past (Leicester last season, Villa 2 seasons ago, as 2 examples). The breaks didn't come, and we lost. We showed that some of our players have what it takes. Which leads me to: We REALLY need another central midfielder. When I saw that Flitcroft was starting last night, I was worried. Tugay and Flitty just don't do it any more. We missed out big time on Cahill and I even think that Sideshow Bob (don't remember the spelling of his real name) would have helped us out big time. When is the last time we had a true scoring threat from central midfield (who didn't turn into a lazy, pie eating, injury prone player)? That's what we need, give Ferguson a chance to create and distribute from the back, and give him another option to distribute it to. As for the goal, yes, Brad should have had it. But, as Roaming Rover pointed out while we were watching the match, it was a very well headed ball, down to the ground first, which was a good move, and unexpected. Did we deserve a point out of the match? No, they scored one goal and we didn't. Were we good enough to get at least a point? Yes. Do we have room for improvement? Yes. Am I talking out of my backside? Probably.

I would agree with what you were saying about it being fair, Den, if people weren't out and out saying that it is stupid to vote for someone you haven't seen. I agree with those who say it is a farce, but then again, most of these lists are. An example would be greatest American athletes of the last century. Near the top of the list should have been Washington Redskins' quarterback/cornerback/punter, Sammy Baugh (American Football). He was the best QB in the league, as a defensive back, he led the league in interceptions and he holds the highest punting average in the history of the NFL, yet he wasn't even considered for the top 100 in most lists. I'd like to see any of the modern players on that list do all of that.
