Not sure about approaching the club first. For weeks, it was all over the tabloids that he did not want to honour his contract with Rovers. This allowed the press to portray the club, as an undesirable place to work. I saw it it as giving them a stick with which to beat Rovers, in the context of press resentment that this "upstart" club had dared to topple Man Utd.
