The Ryan Nyambe Appreciation Thread
DE. replied to blueboy3333's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Agree. Nyambe has some decent attributes but I don't think he's ready for the first team yet. Being on the bench won't do his development any good either though. Might be better to loan him out and see how he fares elsewhere for a season. We don't want to end up with another Adam Henley. -
Let's see what happens in the summer. Ever since Venky's came in we've heard nothing but talk from various people, but action and results have been in short supply. I think Mowbray is genuine in his desire to act on his words, but it's about more than just bringing in the right players. It's about promoting a system and a style of play which gets the best out of those players. If he can get both parts of the equation right then we could have a fantastic 19/20 season. If he gets one right and one wrong then we likely finish mid-table again. Get both wrong and we're looking at a relegation battle. Mowbray is doing his best, of that I have no doubt. It's time to see if his best is good enough. His comments suggest he's very confident of bringing in new players, as he's sticking the knife into a fair few of the current squad. Rightly so, but it could be a bit awkward if we end up fielding many of those players next season. Hopefully that won't be the case. One thing I am happy about is that Mowbray clearly sees what many of us see - that despite consolidation this season we have some glaring problems which should be setting alarm bells ringing at Ewood. Seems like for the manager at least those are being heard loud and clear. His reaction to those warnings this summer will determine whether he's here in 20/21 or somebody else is in the hotseat with the club hitting the reset button for the umpteenth time under Venky's ownership.

Maybe the PFA should just buy Bolton. By this point they've put far more money in than Bassini. Are they going to pay the ground staff, etc, to allow security provisions for the game to go ahead too?

Champions League 2018-2019
DE. replied to speeeeeeedie's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Could easily have been 4 or 5 if Barcelona had taken their other chances on the counter attack in the last five minutes of that game. Three should probably be enough, but you never know. That said I can't see Liverpool beating Barcelona 4-0. -
Champions League 2018-2019
DE. replied to speeeeeeedie's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
I was very impressed by Ajax last night. Pretty sad that their team will be completely broken up over the summer by the big boys, some of whom they've put to shame with their football this year. -
Doubt he'll be up for another season in League 1. Would imagine he'd rather stay here and wait for a chance.
-
Not ready to switch my vote yet, but could do if our summer business improves significantly on the last two windows.

I can't remember anything remotely like this happening at this level of the game. The EFL have tried so desperately to get Bolton to the finish line, but the club is in such disarray that even scheduling a match with the U18's seems to be beyond them. Embarrassing doesn't even begin to describe it.

One of the most bizarre things I've ever seen.
-
We finished in the top half twice under Bowyer, but that's all, and it was with a squad containing the likes of Paul Robinson, Grant Hanley, Shane Duffy, Tom Cairney, Craig Conway (when he was good), Jordan Rhodes (when he was good), Rudy Gestede and Josh King, so it was still a major underachievement. I don't think we have exceeded expectations in any season under Venky's. We met expectation last year by getting promoted out of League 1, and that's the best we've had. In fairness if he was aiming for the opposite corner flag he was spot on. If not then I struggle to understand how a professional footballer manages to mishit a cross that badly. He wasn't even under any serious pressure.
-
The problem with Rodwell is that he only seems to impress in games with less pressure or where he comes on when we're already winning. We need players who will impress on a game we're struggling in, like last night. At least Travis made an impact by pushing forward, getting a shot away and reducing the deficit, which I think had a big impact on how us and Norwich approached the game past the 25 minute mark. Rodwell in comparison did very little to change anything.
-
From recollection Shebby managed to get Kean an extra £1.2m in compensation for the way he left the club, and that was a resignation! I dread to think how much money we've wasted over the years terminating players' contracts early as well. A lot of people have made very good money off this club and given us bugger all in return.
-
I think we will sell if there is a decent offer. Whether there is a decent offer and what we would consider a worthwhile bid remains to be seen, although I think it'll be lower than people expect. Much like when we moved Cairney on. I think the suggestion is that Mowbray is giving Leutwiler game time as "a favour" to give clubs an opportunity to look at him before he's released on a free. It might have backfired somewhat considering he's managed a clanger in pretty much every game, although in fairness he made a few good saves last night to keep the score respectable.

So once again easy targets are singled out (Rodwell, Travis) whilst the worst senior performers (Dack, Graham, Bennett) aren't mentioned. Starting to get very tired of this. His comments about "I don't know why the midfielders were trying to do the defenders' jobs" is just baffling. Didn't you tell Reed that he needs to learn to play like Evans and Smallwood, Tony, whose remit is to cover the defence? Also I'd hazard to guess the reason they were having to fall back and defend was because Norwich were pushing forward in numbers, and leaving the defence to back off and allow Norwich to shoot repeatedly didn't seem to be going so well. How about taking some responsibility for the way we were set up? It clearly wasn't working.
-
Norwich's biggest issue is their defence. We had one shot on target today and scored. They've conceded 17 more goals over the course of the season than Sheff Utd and 10 more than Leeds. Right now they're outscoring their opponents most weeks, but they likely won't be able to do that in the PL, so they are definitely going to need to invest in better defenders. I don't think it's a foregone conclusion they will be relegated next season but with the style of football they play it will almost certainly require some significant reinforcements at the back.
-
At this point we can't say for sure what we'd accept as an offer though. For sure his value to other teams has decreased, but Tony may also be fed up with Dack's playboy lifestyle and inconsistent performances. It's possible he'd agree to sell him at a lesser fee than originally anticipated if he'd have the bulk of it to reinvest. Granted if there's one thing we know about Venky's it is that money from player sales does not get reinvested at anywhere near the same level, but still. Who knows. I'm not sure Dack's personality meshes with Mowbray's expectations and may be cause to move him out. I hope not, frankly, as even an inconsistent Dack has been our most productive player this season by a fair distance, but it wouldn't surprise me if Dack was sold for a lesser price than we would expect.

One issue I did notice tonight which frustrated me - at one point Brereton was in the corner at Norwich's end of the pitch battling for the ball with one of their defenders. He ended up losing the battle and the ball broke with Norwich. I didn't mind that he lost out, but his reaction irked me. Just a dejected slump of the shoulders as he strolled casually back as Norwich broke away. There was a player next to him who had the exact same reaction - I think it was Dack, but I might be wrong. Either way that summed up one of the differences between our attitude and Norwich's attitude. If I was Mowbray I'd be highlighting this incident and asking why these players weren't chasing back in an effort to harry and get that ball back, rather than just giving up and watching forlornly as the opposition took off. Perhaps Dack was a little bit tired by that point, but Brereton hadn't been on that long so no such excuse from him. It just didn't sit right with me. I want to see our players busting a gut even if they lose out on their initial challenges. The body language was just all wrong and really needs to be worked on if we're going to transform this team into genuine winners.
-
Hart would probably be okay in the Championship but his big-time charlie act combined with what would probably be pretty hefty wage demands at this level means it's a pass from me. I'd rather our wage budget was distributed a little better. Having Joe Hart between the sticks isn't going to change that much - having a new left back, centre back and striker on the other hand would hugely improve us.
-
If Dack is sold and we start next season with Smallwood, Evans and Mulgrew lining up it's probably best to be left up. Hopefully such notions will be considered nonsense by the time we get to August though. Come on Tony, you know what you need to do.

Come on now, those first 25 minutes were terrible to watch. We were being ripped apart time after time and had already allowed them 13 shots by the 27th minute. We were very fortunate for the score to be 2-1 and to still have eleven men on the pitch. Norwich play very well but the opening to the game was completely unacceptable. After that we did improve, and we looked better once Norwich dropped the intensity in the second half. They still could have scored another couple if they had been more clinical, though, whereas we only had one shot on target the entire match so even when we were playing better we were never going to score again. The end of the game was particularly frustrating as we dawdled around their penalty box with no attacking threat whatsoever. I don't think Norwich felt we were a serious threat which is why they dropped off a bit in the second half and moved to control the game rather than force themselves on us as they did in the first half. Some of our better players had absolute stinkers which didn't help. Dack was terrible. Lenihan was lacking composure. Travis seemed overwhelmed at times. Graham didn't get into the game at all. Armstrong also struggled to really make a mark. The difference in class was very clear and I think the scoreline flatters us a bit. We were second best for much of the match and got absolutely mauled in the opening stages which on another day could have put Norwich out of sight before half time. There's a lot to digest from tonight. It's not all bad - another good game from Williams, a few good moves when we got the ball down and an improved second half means it wasn't all doom and gloom. Still a lot to work on though and hopefully Mowbray will study the differences between the likes of us and Norwich. I don't think we're a million miles away - we're actually in a similar position to where Norwich were last season in many ways. 14 Norwich City 46 15 15 16 49 60 −11 60 14 Blackburn Rovers 45 16 11 18 62 67 −5 59 The question is whether Mowbray can do what Farke did and transform the club in the summer to be a real force. Norwich have shown it can be done.
-
Pretty sad... bottom three teams are genuinely terrible though. Rotherham put up a bit of a fight at least. The other two just an absolute shambles.
-
Could have been worse. In the first 25 minutes we looked like we were in for a proper hiding. Managed to step it up a bit towards the end of the first half and Norwich were nowhere near as fired up for the second half, for whatever reason. We looked much better as a result but never really looked like scoring. Norwich the better team. Hopefully they will "enjoy" their season in the PL before returning to the Championship again for the 20/21 season.
-
We're probably better off with ten men than having Dack on the pitch at the moment. What is he playing at?
-
On the plus side this should put off any PL managers watching. Don't think we have to worry about getting that £20m bid any more.
-
They had a fair few shots from close range in the first 25 too, so whatever we were attempting it wasn't working. After Travis scored we finally seemed to get a slight foothold in the game but that was purely because we actually started closing down and giving them less time on the ball. The difference between the two teams in possession was really obvious. We were also at various points leaving huge gaps in sections of the pitch which I can't get my head around. Hopefully Norwich will come out a little less pumped up and we can sneak an equaliser. They concede easily so it is possible. Even with that first half performance we could and possibly should have scored twice.
