  1. Lol. Good old Scotland. Draw realistically wouldn't have been enough anyway, so they were going home whether Hungary scored at the end or not. Cruel way to go out though.
  2. Of course not. No player is going to come out in a public interview and slate the manager in the middle of a tournament, is he? We don't have any Roy Keane types in the squad who are going to do something that extreme and risk getting sent home. A player mutiny isn't going to do anything to help the cause either, especially as there's no guarantee this tournament won't be the last one for any of them. I thought Southgate sounded really shaken in the Denmark post-match interview. He's usually pretty calm and composed, but something was off about his tone of voice directly after the match. I don't know if it was a realisation that things were badly broken, or if something had been said in the dressing room, but to me at least there was a noticeable change in his demeanour. Rice and Pickford have come out with two totally different views of the situation in the past couple of days - Rice saying the pressure is getting to the players and they need to let it go, Pickford saying it isn't and they need to embrace the pressure and thrive under it. I preferred Pickford's response, but I imagine Rice's was more truthful.
  3. I don't really understand this comment. How is going out there and playing walking football, as well as retreating into defence as soon as we go ahead, creating memories for anybody? I could understand these comments if we'd been a bit kamikaze and reckless in the first two games, but there's been no leadership, desperation to win, or desire to create memories in either of our first two performances.
  4. Unfortunately they appear to be completely useless in front of goal. Wouldn't have bet on France/Netherlands being the first 0-0 of the tournament but it's heading that way at the moment.
  5. I don't think I've seen this level of discontent across the England fanbase since the 2010 WC. Even in 2014 when we bombed out in the group stages it was more a shrug of the shoulders, as many didn't have confidence that we were better than Italy or Uruguay anyway, and fully expected us to go home early. This time around we've come into the tournament as huge favourites, although that seems to be based more on the theoretical ability of the starting eleven than how they have realistically played as a team over the past year or so. It feels like everyone can see Southgate's time is up, even those who have previously backed him and consider his record a good one. Personally I'd say we've wasted the chance to win something during a time period where numerous big countries have had a dip, but I can accept the alternative argument that Southgate has got England further than other managers and it's potentially churlish to try and diminish those achievements with theoretical external weaknesses. Regardless, things feel stale now, and as with many managers who stay on a bit too long he's lost the plot in regards to team selection and general coaching. In fact he's arguably just lost the plot as a whole, if his ridiculous Kalvin Phillips quote is anything to go by. Everyone should be concerned by Kane's admission that the players literally don't know what they are meant to be doing in certain situations. If those basics aren't being applied in training then we're far past the point of no return for Southgate. The fact we're top of the group, almost certain to qualify, and yet there is still major disappointment points to there being a real undercurrent of disillusionment relating to Southgate's management - on pitch, anyway. I think we can all see that the current performance levels - going back quite a long time now - will not get us very far. We're miles off the better teams in this tournament, despite having a very talented group of players at our disposal. It's one of those situations where it's obvious the manager's time is up. Everyone knows it - the players included. But we're stuck with him and his staff, and we're going to have to watch our team play like a bunch of cloggers until we meet a decent team who will dispatch us with relative ease. I'd love to see what a Kieran McKenna, or an Eddie Howe, or a Jurgen Klopp (won't happen, but hypothetically) could do with this team. The potential is there, but under the current manager that potentially is massively capped. That much is clear, and it's intensely frustrating.
  6. Yep, he's been out of club management for 15 years and I don't see him returning to it once his England tenure ends. I think he'll just shift to another FA position.
  7. Agree, the players look like they're being forced to play against their will. It's baffling to see how lethargic and passive the entire team is. The one time we woke up, when Walker nicked the ball, we scored. A difficult draw against Denmark isn't the end of the world, but the lack of intensity is so incredibly frustrating to watch. It's obvious to everyone watching that if we don't improve massively we are going out as soon as we come up against a quality team. That's why it's difficult to be positive about as being top of the group, no matter how often the players want to remind us of that.
  8. I think Kane admitting the players don't know what to do when momentum is against us was pretty telling as to how well this team is coached. Deary me.
  9. I did chuckle at the BBC interviewer just bluntly asking Walker "does the manager tell you to just sit back after scoring?", lmao.
  10. In a way it's perversely impressive how Southgate has made a group of very exciting, attacking players utterly painful to watch.
  11. A good team would have torn us a new one tonight. Feels like 2010, where we'll get through on the back of multiple poor performances and then get crushed by the first decent team we face.
  12. When the BBC pundits are going in on England this hard you know we've been rancid. Although there's still the usual blind spot for Southgate. All blame on the players it seems.
  13. Haven't really got going at all in this game. Average for 20 mins, being generous, got a lucky goal then sat back and shrank until Denmark equalised. Serious words needed at half time as our collapse after scoring was ridiculous. Can't imagine Southgate delivering the verbal rocket needed mind.
  14. Deserved. Sitting back and defending a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes FFS. Get some fucking courage.
  15. Yeah but fortunately it seems to be affecting Denmark more than us!
  16. Well done on ignoring the "if we win then w/e, we deal with it" line just to jump on that high horse.
  17. It's just horrible watching us play. Slow, ponderous passing that usually ends in a comically misplaced ball which gifts possession back to the opposition. If we get the win then w/e, we deal with it, but we must be one of the least exciting teams in the tournament.
  18. Gareth certainly has plenty to think about after tonight. He'll be happy with the three points, no doubt, but he must be worried by the way our confidence evaporated once the momentum started swinging the other way - and never really came back. Foden and TAA in particular just continued making mistake after mistake, and if they can't even cope with the pressure against Serbia can they really be relied upon when we come up against top teams? We have enough talent with the likes of Saka, Bellingham and Kane to get out of the group even if we aren't playing at our best. It's when we come up against the top sides in the tournament that we'll need to step up, and we need to make sure at that point that every player on the pitch is strong enough to deal with the challenge.
  19. Hopefully that's our worst performance in this tournament, as we won't be going very far otherwise. Decent first 25 minutes, for a Southgate team anyway, followed by a very disappointing rest of the match. Serbia will be kicking themselves for not getting anything out of that, but if they're being honest they'll have to admit they weren't particularly good either. I don't feel like our system gets anywhere near the best out of our current set of players. Definitely feels like it's time for a change, fresh blood at coaching level as well as at playing level. Think a McKenna or even Howe would make us into a pretty exciting team. Still, it is what it is for this tournament. Maybe Gareth will drag us over the line with this functional, dreary style of play. If he does then fair play. If not then let's try something different for 2026. Back to the here and now in 2024, three points is three points. We held on, we move on. Improvement needed but we're off and running.
  20. Shocking performance from Foden. I know he's not in his natural position but he can barely pass to a team mate tonight.
  21. Trent is doing plenty to boost Adam's chances of getting minutes going forward. Nowhere near the level required.
  22. Sad opener really. You ideally want competitive games.
  23. I said the first goal might get Scotland to try and attack, but as it turned out, no. Maybe now. Appreciate it might open them up a bit, but at this rate they're going to get smashed anyway.
