Yep. You knew it was coming, every time Argentina attacked in the last 15 minutes it looked like they were going to score. It was Germany/Sweden all over again. All too reminiscent of watching bigger club/smaller club in the Premier League. I watch the world cup to get away from that, not see more of it. Nigeria also missed two or three golden opportunities to make it 2-1. They really do only have themselves to blame. Amazing that an Argentina side that got hammered 3-0 by Croatia and drew 1-1 with what has turned out to be a pretty poor Iceland side still came second with a point to spare. If you ain't good enough you ain't good enough, and Nigeria and Iceland just weren't good enough. Somehow Argentina were, but I think their luck will probably run out in the next round. There are still a lot of problems there.

On the plus side I think we'd have more chance of getting beaten by Nigeria than by Argentina. I'd fancy us against them. Honestly right now I'd fancy us against pretty much anybody. It's been a tournament where the vast majority of the big nations have played like utter shit and still gotten out of their groups. It's obviously not a good look for the competition but we have bucked the trend in that we have looked very convincing and fully deserve our place in the knockout stages. I just hope we can keep it going, because there is nothing to fear in this tournament.

Much like all of the other smaller nations in this tournament, Nigeria missing easy chances will contribute to them going out. So many undeserving bigger nations going through. It's a bit depressing really. Hope that whoever gets Argentina in the next round absolutely demolishes them.

The officials just don't seem to understand how VAR is supposed to work. They're using it for slightly contentious decisions rather than clear and obvious errors. Yes it's new and things won't go perfectly as a result, but as Shearer just pointed out, should they be trialling a system officials clearly don't fully understand at the most important tournament in world football?

Fair to say Spain and Portugal are nothing to be scared of.

I think we'd still have 6/6 but you're right, it would have been a very different style of play. We probably would have beaten Tunisia more comfortably but not scored as many against Panama. Time to see how Southgate's team deals with a real attacking threat in Belgium.
-
At least they calmed down a bit. Was worried they would injure one of our boys, but maybe their manager had a word at half time and told them to cut it out. Nothing to gain from playing like they did in the first half.
-
Great result. We took our foot off the gas in the second half but that's understandable. No point risking injury or exhaustion when the game was already wrapped up. My only slight concern is that our defence was breached a few times by a poor Panama team, so that's something for Southgate to analyse. Overall a hugely positive result and I'm looking forward to the Belgium game.

We means England.
-
True, but it'll be a good indicator of how far we can expect to go. Belgium will be our first game against what you'd call genuinely decent opposition.
-
Better hope Belgium don't get too many free kicks/corners!
-
I'm going back to calling them rubbish. And that's being polite.
-
Panama's defending is shambolic. Absolute idiots.
-
Keep it up boys. Let's hammer this lot and crank up the GD. Superb strike from Lingard.
-
Fantastic penalty.
-
OK. Allow me to rephrase. Good thing Panama aren't in England or Belgium's class. That was shocking defending by England.
-
Exactly what we needed! Brilliant header. Could and should have had a penalty for Panama's grappling in the box anyway but judging by the way it's being officiated in this tournament I assume it's legal now.

I think the bigger countries will step up a bit in the knockout stages, it's almost like they've been happy to play in first gear during the groups knowing they have enough to get through. I expect we'll see a different Germany and Brazil especially in the knockout rounds. Not sure about France or Argentina, neither have shown they have much more than we've seen so far and Argentina in particular may not even get through. With all of that said I don't think we have anything to fear. Every team has weaknesses, it's just up to us to attack theirs and keep ours at a minimum. I'm hoping we can score today in the first half, if so I think it could end 3 or 4-0. If it gets to HT at 0-0 then I'll be a bit worried. I can't fathom Panama winning this one or even managing to score tbh. If they do then that's obviously a huge concern.

I see the Serbian FA are lodging an official complaint with FIFA regarding their match with Switzerland. VAR is in many ways FIFA making a rod for their own back. Before VAR they could always use the excuse of "none of the officials saw it", but with VAR replaying every incident from multiple angles mistakes like Kane and Mitrovic's penalties not being given either come down to sheer incompetence or purposeful ignoring of the rules by the officials to benefit one side over another.
-
I don't know if I'd call it luck. Sweden were giving Germany every possible chance to equalise. They were giving away silly, dangerous fouls, constantly losing possession, screwing up counter attacks... it was like watching a team of amateurs try to play professionally. They couldn't even do simple things like run a ball into the corner and run down the clock. I was a bit embarrassed for them. They somehow got even worse when Germany went down to ten. If England had given that second half performance they would be crucified, and rightly so.
-
Shameful second half performance from Sweden. They just didn't deserve a point out of this.
-
Wow. As it stands Germany are going out!
-
Tbf this is the same system that decided Kane being speared to the ground and Mitrovic being tag team slammed into the floor weren't penalties, so this was pretty tame in comparison.
-
Another blatant foul missed by VAR. I like the idea of the system but these inconsistencies will kill it.
