Looking like Man Utd are set to do another u-turn on Greenwood and dump him from their squad. They probably don't have much of a choice considering the backlash, but what a mess. Even with the talent he has, it's difficult to see him playing football in the UK again. With Ched Evans it was a bit different because he was ultimately cleared of charges, regardless of his behaviours. The waters are a lot murkier with Greenwood because there is some pretty horrible stuff out there, but because charges were dropped the situation is left in a weird limbo of what is (seemingly valid) assumed guilt without any official conclusion. I'm also not sure how a contract termination would work from a legal perspective with the charges dropped. I suppose the devil will be in the detail in terms of how his contract reads. Assumedly there's something about bringing the organisation into disrepute, but at the same time the club conducted an official investigation and were on the verge of bringing him back into the fold, which may complicate matters.

I remember at the Carrow Road game last season watching in confusion as Norwich and Rovers walked out, Freed From Desire blaring out of the ground's speakers as plumes of flame shot up from the edges of the pitch. It was pretty cool, don't get me wrong, and I know it was because the match was on Sky... but it seemed a bit much for a couple of Championship cloggers. I can only imagine how a CL match feels these days.

Should be easy enough for Hendo to throw a couple hundred grand a week from his wages to women's rights and LGBT charities as a way of continuing to show support - he can probably find a way to live on the measly £500k pw left over, so I'm sure he'll be right on it 👍 Football continues to be a grotesque reflection of Western society as a whole. EFL still feels somewhat normal, relatively speaking, but the highest level of the game - Champions League included - is just totally soulless. Goes without saying the Saudi Pro League falls into the same category, just without the highest level of the game part.

If Pears is considered our genuine #1 then it would be highly irresponsible to spend nearly £1m of a very limited budget on a backup goalkeeper imv. I expect Wahlstedt to be in nets sooner rather than later.

Western values promote money above basically everything else, the core of capitalism, so that's pretty much your answer. He's being paid enough to forget his morals.

I can understand some VAR calls being controversial - even with the benefit of ten different replays from ten different angles, some decisions are still going to be contentious. Sometimes it's really difficult to make a judgement, VAR as a system helps but there's still an element of human consideration involved. That's quite okay. Wolves non-penalty is truly baffling though. I can't think of a single reason not to give it. You only needed one replay to see it was obviously a foul, and would have instantly been given anywhere else on the pitch. I'm generally not one for conspiracies but it's either incompetency on a staggering scale from numerous people who should know better, or something weird was going on.

I'm not sure if there's terminology to separate the officials from the system, but yes, it's the people in charge of it that are at fault. The system will have given them everything they needed to make the right decision, but they somewhat inexplicably didn't make the correct call.

I'm not sure it matters where it ranks in all-time greatest VAR mistakes, but it's such an obvious foul and penalty that it's genuinely mystifying how it couldn't be given. I really don't know what explanation you could give as the VAR official that would make any sense. I know the officials involved have now been axed for this weekend, but it doesn't help Wolves at all, and still begs the question of how a group of officials could be so incompetent as to miss such an obvious foul. There is absolutely no point in having VAR if it isn't catching such clear and obvious errors in a referee's call. That is literally what it's supposed to be for.

It was certainly a good enough team to beat Ipswich on the day. I think they'd played a European game midweek and I'm sure I can remember Fergie complaining about them being tired and griping about the fixture list. The more things change...

At the very least we should have gotten a draw at Old Trafford. Hard to know how the game at Ewood would have panned out, but we were on top before the sending off and United's away record during that period was poor, so I don't think we go on to lose. Ipswich also gave United a massive helping hand by completely capitulating to that 9-0 defeat, which ridiculously swung the GD in United's favour. The only caveat to that is that Ipswich did beat them at Portman Road when they would have been expected to lose, so that negates the 9-0 somewhat. From memory United rested a number of players for that match and their overconfidence was punished.

Thanks. From the way the tale is told nowadays in certain quarters, you'd think losing Cantona had a devastating impact that completely crushed United. The fact is they ultimately slightly improved once he got suspended. It had no impact whatsoever on their results. Meanwhile we spent the majority of the season without Batty and Gallacher - with both of them fit perhaps we would have won the league before the final day of the season.
-
Fortunately for us Cole didn't exactly hit the ground running at Man Utd, although I think too much is made of the Cantona suspension. Maybe he would have driven them on in the final months, but I'm sure I remember reading that statistically they gained more points after he was suspended.

We got shafted by ridiculous decisions in both our games against them in 94/95, the baffling sending off of Berg at Ewood and the phantom push given against Shearer at OT. Big Ludek Miklosko wasn't standing for that though, judging by his heroic performance on the final day of the season he was incensed as we were at the injustice of it all.

Overall view... Coventry smashed Boro, who have had a really poor start to the season with two defeats and as of yet no goals. Good win for Birmingham against Leeds, who don't look from the first two games like they're a class above anyone in the division. After last week's disaster of a result and eulogies being written for Ainsworth, QPR got a solid 2-1 away win against Cardiff. Leicester managed a narrow 1-0 win away win at Huddersfield. Third defeat in all competitions for Huddersfield, looking like another difficult season ahead for them. Leicester with two wins out of two so far. Hull with a 4-2 win over Sheff Weds, who also look destined to struggle this season. Ipswich with a 2-0 win over Stoke - 22 shots to Stoke's 9, also 10 on target versus just 2. Great start to the season for Ipswich, really poor result and performance for Stoke though. Narrow 1-0 defeat for Millwall at home to Bristol City. Sunderland with another defeat at Preston, 2-1. Struggling to score and defend, it's looking a bit worrying for Sunderland at the moment. Cracker of a game between Southampton and Norwich, 4-4. Southampton can score, but seem to be pretty shaky defensively. Another excellent result for Plymouth, getting a point away at Watford. Looks like it was a good game at the Hawthorns as well, with WBA narrowing out Swansea with a 3-2 win. Another two teams who seem unable to defend very well. Early signs are that it's going to be wide open this season.

Will be interesting to hear what JDT has to say. I think he'll be quite critical. From how he spoke in the presser I think he was expecting much more than that first half performance. -
I simply said we were a top half team with Mowbray as manager and Gallagher playing on the right wing. Enough said.

A couple of Ipswich mates texting me asking if the league has really dropped in quality this much since they were last in it. They dominated Stoke at home today.

I agree, just a shame that penalty miss seemed to absolutely wreck us mentally, especially Szmodics. Last season we would not have come back at all though, so there is some improvement. -

Will take a point considering where we were on 70 minutes. Can't help but think a proper decent striker turns the draw into a win, but it is what it is. A lot to be concerned about with that performance, but we got away with a point, which is more than I expected at half time. -

Rotherham must wish all of their home games were against us. -

Last season, 1-0 down at half time, same scorer for Rotherham. Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself. -

For anyone suggesting we don't need strikers or experience, I present Exhibit A. -

Exactly, do people expect him to say "well he's not much of a striker but it's not like we have many options". JDT knows full well Gallagher isn't much good as a striker, but he'll do everything he can to get maximum out of him whilst he's here. -
Always been a fan of that Haaland fella 😎
