  1. Yes it’s unbelievably sad. Here is a statement from Gordon Cowans... “Dear friends and supporters. In an attempt to stop speculation and misinformation about my health, I have decided to release the following statement. After a series of recent tests, I have been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease. Medication has been prescribed and with some life changes, which I intend to commit to fully, the prognosis is a good one. I will be out and about for many years yet and see this as just another of life's journeys. My match day duties with Aston Villa will remain an important part of my future and I will continue to perform these, in support of my beloved club, for as long as my health allows. With the love and support of family and close friends guaranteed, I am very optimistic and positive about the future. With Love. Gordon ( Sid ) Cowans”

  5. Playing Devil's Advocate on this comparison of today's squad and that of The Don in the 80s. While I don't disagree that perhaps only 2 or 3 of this squad would get into Don's late 80s group (Dack and maybe Lenihan and Travis), let us not forget that there were regular accusations from Rovers fans that "we didn't want promotion as we couldn't afford it". And when I say regular I mean every season! Rose tinted specs and all that? Had there been a BRFCS message board back then it would have been chock-full of conspiracy theories that would have grown arms and legs in this environment and I don't know which is worse; 'not quite getting there' as we are at the moment or 'collapsing like Devon Loch' in the last quarter of the season when in a seemingly brilliant position, which we seemed to do on a regular basis back then. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I thank God for the Uncle Jack years, because being a Rovers fan has been bloody hard work at times over the other 50 or so of them!

  11. The money did help but in respect of Archibald, he could have earned more money elsewhere than we gave him at that time. He came to Ewood mainly because of his respect for The Don and his reputation in the east of Scotland. Its easy to forget now after the Kenny years just what a big deal that scoop was at the time.

  13. Great stuff mate - as someone who has worked with homeless people for the best part of 40 years I know how much they appreciate things like this. Good luck with it.

  21. This. Most players these days will have huge incentives in their contract to get promotion - particularly from championship to premier league. Anyone who thinks a player or players is/are deliberately under performing or 'don't want to go up' is deluded. They simply aren't quite good enough.
