v Sunderland (h) - 26/12/2024

Well you won't see many wide players play on the side of their strongest foot in the top 8 of the Championship and above. Running down the wing and crossing is a basic ability expectation and the consensus is they should still be able to do it on their weaker foot. I'm not saying a good winger on their "correct" side isn't effective.... but the idea of "right footed winger on the right and left footed winger on the left" is dinosaur football, proven at the highest level. The reverse changes the size of the goal entirely for finishing when through on goal from a wide area. -

Wingers on the wrong side is one of the most effective moves in football in terms of goalscoring. The reality is the goal is central and if they cut inside they should be facing goal with more space on their stronger foot = more efforts on goal. That's preferred by most good wingers today. Hence the likes of Saka, Cole Palmer, Jared Bowen, Mbeumo, Cristiano Ronaldo in the past, Mahrez was an expert and closer to home Ben Brereton at Rovers or Harvey Elliott. If it handicaps them they aren't good enough. Mohamed Salah is a left footed right winger, so this opinion... that I hear fairly often around me during football I'm sorry to say is wildly wrong. Nearly every good winger you're watching today plays on the "wrong side" and for a good reason. I hope this changes your mind and gives you a new outlook on a winger. If they can't still run to the byline on their weaker foot and cross... they aren't good enough. -
January Transfer window
Ghost7 replied to chaddyrovers's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Interesting that Millwall paid £3m for Mihailo Ivanovic in the summer. Isn't that more than our entire transfer budget AFTER selling Adam Wharton, Szmodics and getting £4m extra for David Raya? -

Loved the first half display, we made Luton look very ordinary. Gueye was a real handful and skilful, also ran his socks off. Tronstad was absolutely outstanding, first half in particular; he's always been great at breaking up play but his passing and first touch seems a lot sharper this season. I feel he is the player we'd really miss. Quite fitting his new song mentions Rodri. ACD showed glimpses of what we've lacked this season - a directness, offering tricks whilst actually progressing and entering the box... I would look to loan out Leonard and bring in a quality striker, then attempt to get Sigurdsson off the books. If we can bring in 4 players in Jan and keep the squad together we'll be looking a decent force. £2-4m might be all it takes, it should be there, we didn't spend it in summer. -

The goal was absolutely miles offside. Rovers are very fortunate to be ahead but it was a great move. At the same time Boro should have 10 men. -

Dolan doesn't have the right footballing brain or ability. His work rate is good though but that's about it. It's a sorry state of affairs if we've no one better. -

The current 11 on the pitch aren't going to win this match. Pretty certain of that. So not sure what the plan is? -
But but... there's a court case. OK what about the other 12 years? 🤣

Ultimately what you can choose to take away from this is that a lack of investment is the reason we were the only top flight game cancelled on Saturday. Has anyone seen Venky's??? Are you out there? 😱🥸🧐

This comment annoyed me last night although I didn't say anything. Reminded me of the transfer windows where you just spout nonsense that suits your agenda when the reality is the business the club will do is unknown. Just like there was always a chance this game would be off, hence the posters sensible comment hoping for it to be on. Maybe a lesson could be learnt here and you can start to be more receptive of the conditions around the club, in this case quite literally before writing something. Consider their concerns might be real and educated.

Sam Szmodics-Your thoughts?
Ghost7 replied to BRFC4EVA's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Tough watch. I love how assured his finishes where, if it was on that left side you just knew it was getting tucked away right foot. Always a goal. It's really poor we didn't get the playoffs with him and Brereton in the team. That squad just needed a small amount of backing in January a couple of times. Slightly more in touch and willing owners would have had us back in the prem by now. -
Yasine Ayari was misused by Rovers imo and barely featured when he clearly had something. We went with either Moran, JRC, Garrett or Buckley instead. Even Fleck... Anyone but him it appeared. At one point we had A.Wharton and Ayari and they still didn't start together.

Message from a Boro supporting fan

Done, good luck to your friend and his brave son! -
Indian football ownership in the UK does not work. It was never going to work not by a company that size, an extremely rich individual perhaps but the bureaucracy is too much and now you can all see it in black and white when something goes to court it is the same. To get something done is extremely difficult and as I've said before things that are done quickly elsewhere can take years! I can tell you this is the reason for our repeated deadline day transfer failings. Venky's, nothing else. The club should never have been sold to them by the Walkers and they should not have been allowed to buy. You can follow this court case all you want, sadly nothing will change.

Defending deep as we appear to have been trained to by the current staff. We often feel on top of our goalkeeper when a team attacks. It looks to me like the message is get deep and drop behind the ball when out of possession. I thought the same on their cutback that should have been put away. -

I've got to say even in our clean sheet games Batth probably should have cost us a goal or two. He looks clumsy and a bit past it, got away with a few already this season. Phillips on the other hand put in an impressive performance last night. Again, the compensation received for Phillips should have been spent on a centre back. When was the last time we spent money on a centre half? Hyam? Shocking stuff. We are where we are due to receiving funds frequently and not reinvesting them in the first 11, that is on the owners. -

There's an old saying buy cheap buy twice... which Rovers are likely going to keep on experiencing. Wahlstedt, Telalovic... Gueye... and Toth might be the same. From what I can see Wahlstedt is 3rd choice for his team in Sweden, he doesn't make the match day squad and is behind Klaesson and Jasper Hansen. You can argue the same for players like Hedges and Pickering. We still need a good winger and a better permanent left back. -

Two words. The owners. -
I've defended Gueye based on not getting the right service and the team being out of form but he had it tonight, that cross is perfect from Brittain (who was excellent all night), it was a very worrying miss.

Dolan is playing way too much mens football due to a steady lack of investment in this squad over the past 3 - 4 years. That's my assessment on things. Crap player but not his fault he's starting every week. -

Ghost7 replied to Herbie6590's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
On the pathetic first goal that loose ball in the middle is Dolan's to win. He has to win it. Most players would... but the man is child like. The Sheffield player scuffed the shot because he wasn't favourite to get there and was expecting more of a challenge from Dolan. That should have been our ball. Also on the second, Hyam strangely tackling Moore with the outside of his weaker foot didn't help. He could have taken the ball and man with a proper tackle on his stronger side. The kind of challenge a player like Moore needs. The less said about Rankin-Costello the better. A technically odd player that seems to like hitting it into touch more than finding his teammates. Dolan, Rankin-Costello and Hedges all need dropping. -

There's definitely a feeling under Eustace of "I have the ball what do I do next with it". We are playing out short from the goalkeeper without having any midfielders capable of coming for the ball or taking it comfortably on the half turn and we do not have runners in behind. I'm not sure what the idea is behind playing it short without any of the above. Whatever the gameplan is at the moment, it's not working even before today.
