Enjoy the 1st Division lads, with all the other 'big' clubs! I'm sure Robbie Savage is having a chuckle to himself tonight. I'm just waiting for the mass exodus of players now.

That was exactly what we needed, after our poor run of form. I thought that we played very well, against a Charlton side, who were clearly thinking about something else. One thing that I would say, is that for all out nice build up, good passing and great possession, we didn't create enough chances. As the people on Prem Plus were saying, if we get a top striker to play with Bellamy, then we will be such a better team. Tugay had a great game in midfield and I thought Reid was doing well before getting switched. I would have brought Mokoena on for Nelsen myself, putting him at right back and leaving Reid where he was. Hopefully Nelsen will be fit for Wednesday, because we will need him. Also, a word for Alan Curbishly, who has been a top manager for Charlton and a great servant for football. He deserves a break. -

A win is a most in this match. We have really struggled of late, so much so that now we are on the verge of not playing in Europe, while two months ago, we were almost guaranteed to do so. Newcastle have come out of nowhere to really challenge for the Uefa Cup. With Chelsea still to come, we have to take maximum points from this game. Rovers 2 - Bellamy, Reid Charlton 1 - Bent -

I'm extremely disappointed with last nights result. It was a game that we should have won, but didn't. We are struggling at the minute and will have to pick our form up, if we are to get into Europe. I'm not going to criticise the players, because they have done so well to get us into this position, I just hope that the season doesn't peter out. -

God, I really hate Birmingham and their moaning manager Steve Bruce. I would love it if we could beat them on Wednesday and really increase their chances of relegation! The return of Robbie Savage is likely to increase the tension in this match and I'm sure Bruce would love to put one over on him and Mark Hughes. This could be a difficult game for us, but we have the better side and should win. I'd like to see a line up of: Friedal Neill Todd Nelsen Gray Emerton Reid Savage Pedersen Bellamy Pongolle 2-1 to Rovers, with Bellamy and Reid scoring. Sutton with Brum's goal. -

I haven't seen the game our the goal, but it sounds like it was blatantly offside. It also seems like we didn't create very much as it was. The last three games have been disappointing in terms of points and in some cases the performance as well. Our chances of a Champions League place has slipped away in the last three games. -
[Archived] Craig Bellamy - Good Signing Or Not?
RoyRover replied to Modi's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
A bit more creativity in there would be nice, but I see this being the prefered pairing and I doubt that we will buy any one for that position in the summer, now that Tugay has signed on. Reid has been arguably our best player this season and if he added more goals to his game, he'd be a top player. As for Bellamy, they guy showed again yesterday what a great player he is. The two goals were as good as you'd see from Henry, Shevchenko, Eto'o and Ronaldinho. Up until now, he has never really been a consistent goal scorer. His pace used to get him into good positions but he couldn't always finish the chances, he is now. He got his 17th goal of the season yesterday, which is unreal, when you consider how much of the season he has missed. I can see a number of clubs wanting to buy him, but I think he will stay. We'll have to show some ambition in the summer, by buying a top striker to play with him. The fact that we are on the verge of European football will be a plus for him also. -
I'd like to say that I was disappointed with the result, but in truth we deserved a point and had we lost you couldn't really complain when you consider the chances that Portsmouth had. Bellamy's goals were unreal and in the summer we have to find a partner to play along side him and share the goal scoring burden. If we do that, then we can challenge for the Champions League again next season. I'm disappointed that we have only picked up two points this week, because I felt that we needed to win at least one to keep the pressure on Spurs.

I was very disappointed with last night's result. It was a game that we needed to win to keep our push for the CL going. For all our possession, we didn't create that many chances. Pedersen had a good free kick saved and had a good goal ruled out. Bellamy had a good chance in the second half, which Filan saved and a glancing header that went wide. All in all, I didn't think that we did enough to win the game. I think our goal was a foul on Filan, but this evened out the perfectly good goal we had ruled out earlier. Bellamy didn't have his best game, mainly because the service into him was pure. I would have liked to see Pongolle play up with him instead of Dickov. Kuqi got the all important goal, but my God he was shockingly bad, even by his standards. He has to be replaced in the summer, if we are to progress next season.

I read Dan Brown's Angels and Demons not so long ago. Like the Da Vinci code it's a great page turner. I've also read some Frederick Forsyth books of late. Avenger is a great book, although parts of it are a bit ridiculous. I'm in the middle of Forsyth's Icon, which is absolutely brilliant. -
Apart from Arsenal's result today, we couldn't have asked for a better set of results in terms of the race for fourth spot. Spurs getting beaten means that they are only three points ahead of us and they still have to play United. Bolton getting beaten by Man Utd keeps them behind us in the race for the Champions League. We still have a great chance to qualify and we could move level on points with Spurs if we beat Wigan. With Arsenal to play United next, we could hopefully take advantage of them losing and move a couple of points clear of them. The toughest games for us will be Liverpool and Chelsea at home and Portsmouth away next weekend. It's crucial that we don't drop points from now until the end of the season, but these three games could be very difficult for us, when you consider how well these teams have been playing.

David Pleat, Garth Crooks, Mark Bright, Steve Claridge, Mark Lawrenson and Trevor Francis are all crap IMO. Andy Gray irritates me as well. -
At this stage of the season, all that matters is the three points and I'd settle for a dull 1-0 Rovers victory right now if I had the choice. Wigan have been excellent this season and have done well away from home. I'm sure they'd like to get back at us, after we thrashed them 3-1 earlier in the season. The fact that it is a local derby makes the game even more important for the players and the fans. We didn't play well againt Sunderland and Wigan lost to West Ham in the last minute, so both teams will be looking to improve. Being at home and having such a good record at Ewood, I think we'll win this one. Rovers 3- Bellamy, Reid, Pedersen Wigan 1- Roberts Also, just to confirm, the game is on Sky Sports?
-
If WBA can hold onto their lead, that would be a fantastic result for Rovers and unexpected one at that. Spurs would only be ahead of us on goal difference and we would still have a great chance to qualify for the Champions League. After we lost to Spurs, I didn't think we could get fourth spot, but if they lose tonight we have as good a chance as anyone.
-
That article sums up nicely the direction that Reid's career has taken since joining Rovers. He was a talented youngster, who Souness wasn't able to get the best out of. As such his performances suffered and he looked like he wouldn't be up to the Premiership. But under Hughes, like so many other players, he has really developed and is now one of our best players. It also seems that Steve Staunton will give him an extended run in the Republic's team. If Reid were to be injured or sold, then I think people would realise how much we would miss him in the midfield.
-
Bolton losing today was a good result for us, as it keeps them at arms length from ourselves. I think that they could possibly overtake us with their games in hand, but hopefully they will drop some more points toward the end of the season. The fact that they still have to play Birmingham twice is very much to their advantage though, as you'd think that they'd collect maximum points from those two games.
-
Maybe he read my post before the game! I think his performance yesterday, highlighted what an important player he is to our team. Without him yesterday we wouldn't have won and that's forgetting his goal.
-
I'm delighted with the result, as I thought that this could have been a difficult match for us and so it turned out. Reid's goal was brilliant, a great driving run and a thumping finish. Only yesterday I was saying how he needed to add more goals to his game. It sounds like he and Friedal were the main reasons that we won today. I'm not that bothered about the performance, just the points, which keep us in the hunt for fourth spot.
-
That's one of his strengths. He is the only player that really drives forward from midfield and then has the stamina to sprint back the length of the pitch to make a tackle. I've always liked him as a player and I think that he has been one of the reasons why we have played so well this season. He has the ability to break up play and he keeps his passes simple, either to a more creative player, or to hold onto possession. The one thing that he lacks is goals. If he scored more goals, then I think a lot more people would hold him in higher regard. He looks like a player that can score goals and he'll come close to scoring in matches. People have made poor comparisons between him and Gerard, but the one thing that stands out to me the most is that Gerard has 19 goals this season, while Reid has one. He's a vital member of our team and Hughes obviously rates him and I'd say that it's a must to offer him a new contract. I wouldn't be willing to sell him, but if United offered over £6-8 million for him, then we couldn't really say no.

[Archived] Pedersen For United?
RoyRover replied to Hughesy's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
If an offer came in from United, I'm sure that the club would consider it, unless it was totally insulting. Pedersen has been a great signing for us IMO. He solved the left sided problem that our team had and he has provided us with our only other genuine goal threat. He may go missing for large portions of a game, but he is always likely to pop and get a goal. An offer over £8 million would surely interest the club. There would be the possibility of bringing in two or three new players, one of which would have to be a replacement for Pedersen. However, would a replacement be able to fit into our style of play as well and get the same amount of goals that Pedersen does? I'm not sure and that's why I'd want to keep him. Added to this, I'd hate to see him playing for United. We signed him, when United weren't willing to and he has developed into a really good player and the thought of United nipping in, once they've seen that he can handle the Premiership would really annoy me. -
[Archived] Craig Bellamy - Good Signing Or Not?
RoyRover replied to Modi's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
I must say that when it became clear that we were after Bellamy, I wasn't that pleased. I had always seen him as a Milan Baros type of player, who used his pace to get into good positions, but was never a consistent goal scorer. I'd have prefered it if we had signed Benni McCarthy. But now, I'm delighted that we did sign him. Over the last couple of games, he has shown consistently how good he can be and that he can be the 20+ goals a season striker that we have been looking for. When you consider the amount of games he has missed through injury, then it makes his goals for us even more remarkable. If we could sign a quality partner to go with him, then we'd have a seriously good team. -
With the way both teams are playing at the moment, you'd say that Blackburn would be the huge favourites for this game. Sunderland haven't won at home all season and this would add weight to the idea that Blackburn should win this game. But Rovers always seem to be the team that a player scores his first goal against, breaks his long run without a goal against and in this case could get their first home win of the season against. We can't be dropping points at this stage of the season, especially against a poor side like Sunderland. You'd expect Sunderland to get at least one home win this season, and if it happened this weekend, I wouldn't be surprised. I still think that we will win this one and with Bellamy and some of the other players on fire, then I wouldn't bet against us getting three points. Sunderland 1 - Kyle Rovers 3 - Bellamy, Pongolle, Pedersen

I totally agree. I think Todd and Nelsen play much better together. Zurab is a good player and one we should definately sign, because of the options that he can give us in defence and he has shown that he can cope with the Premiership. Sometimes he can switch off for a second and that's all it takes for a goal to be scored. I'm not worried when I see his name on the team sheet, like I would be if I saw Amoruso or Matteo. Still, I prefer Todd, plus he's our captain.
