[Archived] Rovers 3 Middlesbrough 2

That was a fantastic result for us today! We showed what a good side we are, by beating a team who had just knocked Roma out of the Uefa Cup and doing it with a man less for a lot of the game. Bellamy is on fire at the moment and I wouldn't be surprised if loads of teams are sniffing around him during the summer. Both his goals were class and it shows what a difference he makes to our team when he plays. Savages red card was so harsh and I'd say he'd have a good chance of getting that overturned. Freidal should have saved the first goal, but made it for it with a wonderful save from a Viduka header. Their second goal came from bad defending, two men marking the same man and allowing the right back to break free. Reid seemed to play well and Emerton linked up well with play and looked good. We still have a good chance of getting Champions League football, but we have to keep our good form going and not drop points that we should be winning. -

Depending on which Boro side turns up, we could either steamroller them or have a very difficult afternoon at the office. We have been strong at home all season and should look to keep this going against a side who are languishing at the wrong end of the table. We can only improve from yesterday and I'm sure Hughes will have them hard at it this week in training. 3-1 to Rovers Bellamy double, Pongolle Yakubu for Boro. -
I think that Pedro Mendes would be a good shout, because he could be the player to replace Tugay. He sits deep like Tugay, setting up play with his brilliant passing. Yesterday showed that he also has an eye for a spectacular goal like Tugay. I really think he could be a good signing. If we were to buy players from the relegated clubs, it doesn't mean that they would go straight into the first team. It would provide competition for places and strengthen the squad. Julio Arca would challenge Pedersen for the left wing spot, Melchiot would compete with Lucas, Mendes and Tugay would be playing for the same position. It's important that the squad is strengthened sufficently, so we can cope with European football (hopefully), strengthen our position in the league and challenge in the cups. Matthew Upson wouldn't be a bad shout at all. We would have more cover at centre back then and hopefully Amoruso and Matteo could finally be moved on.

God, we were awful yesterday and were totally undeserving of the three points. But it makes up for last week. We had two efforts on goal and scored both of them, will Villa had at least 10 great chances and didn't bag any of them. In the summer, when Villa bought Baros and it looked liked Kuqi was our only buy I was really annoyed. I thought that we should have been after Baros, but now I'm so happy that we bought Bellamy and for £2 million less! Baros should have had a hat-trick and fluffed them all. Our defence was dreadful yesterday, Friedal bailed us out on numerous occasions. I thought that Savage had a good game, as did Pongolle. Emerton looked good when he came on and Mokoena's arrival helped our defence some. We need to improve, but people say that the sign of a good time is when they play badly and win. With Spur's loss yesterday, we still have a chance of getting the 4th spot.

We were aweful in the the first half and deserved to be a couple of goals down. The defence was all over the place. I hope Hughes gave them a rollocking and they come out and get the win we need to keep our European dreams alive.

[Archived] Spurs 3 - 2 Rovers

I was gutted by yesterday's result, because that was a game that we should have won. We dominated for nearly the whole match and got done over by three refereeing decisions. The first goal must have hit Mido's shin two or three times before it went out, but yet Spurs got the throw in and Keane went on to score a wonder goal. The second goal was clearly handball, but yet the decision wasn't given and then in the last minute Stalteri handles the ball bang in front of the ref and we don't get a penalty. Our two goals were excellent, there was great passing and movement in the lead up and the finishes were lethal. I was delighted for Pongolle because I've always rated him and I think he could score a few goals for us. However, for all our position and dominance, Robinson only made one save from Bentley's 30 yard screamer. The only other chances we had were the ones where Pongolle missed the ball from a yard out and then Todd headed one wide. I think that our Champions League chances are gone now, but we still have the chance to qualify for the Uefa Cup and we must do it, so the likes of Bellamy stay and so we can attract better players to the club. -
The French League is also very good to watch. The football is very attractive to watch, there are some great teams and there are a huge amount of class players playing in France. It is no where near as competitive as the Premiership or La Liga, but often it is better to watch. As for the poll, I really think that we can finish 4th, depending on the result tomorrow though. It will be hard to win at Tottenham, because they haven't lost in 11 games there. If we lose, then there will be a six point gap between the teams, which may as well be seven, because of the goal difference. We would find it very difficult to over haul that. A 5th or 6th place finish would be pretty good then anyway. But if we win, we will have a great chance to go on and claim the last Champions League spot.

When I turned the England game on, Bentley had scored his goals, but it was great to hear that he had scored two. He obviously has a lot of talent and Hughes is starting to get the best out of him. His hat-trick against United showed what I good player he could be for us over the years and that it could be another bit of great business from Hughes. But he isn't able to get into the first team and I think that says quite a bit about how strong our team must be at the moment.

[Archived] Should Dunny Have Come Home?
RoyRover replied to blinddevotion's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
If Dunn were able to stay fit, lose weight and show that he is able to play consistently in the Premiership, then I'm sure Hughes would consider him. Personally I wouldn't want him back, because he is so injury prone and we would never get the full benefit of him. I'd rather look elsewhere and pay a bit more for someone who will be able to make a difference to our team. -

Fair enough, I wasn't meaning to sound harsh. -
Andy Todd has turned into a class player for us. When we signed him, I thought that he was a liability and no more than a squad player. But he has totally turned me around and now if is the back bone of our defence and a great captain. He has had his problems in the past and while at Blackburn, but now he is the first name on the team sheet and is one of the best defenders in the Premiership.

That's what stood out to me as well! It will be very difficult to get a result at Spurs this weekend, simply because they are so good at home. On paper, I think their team looks better than ours, but there isn't much in it. You would say that United and Arsenal had a better team on paper, but we've beaten both of them. I think Wigan showed that if you go to White Hart Line and try to play football, then you can open Spurs up and they are beatable. If we win this one, I really believe that we can qualify for the Champions League. If we don't, we still have a chance, but it the six point gap, plus goal difference would be hard to over turn. I presume Pedersen won't be playing, because of the injury to his hamstring? That could be a blessing in disguise, because if he went there and played a blinder, it could make Spurs increase their interest in him. But then again, without Pedersen we are missing his goals and set piece ability. As the games go by and we keep winning, I'm getting more confident in our team winning important matches (I've just put myself up for a big let down). I'm going for a 2-1 Rovers win with Bellamy, Pongolle and Keane scoring. -

You aren't going to play players out of position and drop others, to give one guy a game. Lucas is a right back, it's his best position. You aren't going to play him in the centre, because then you would have to drop Todd or Nelsen who are natural centre backs and who have been the main stay of our defence. If we had an injury crisis, then maybe Neill could play in the centre and Emerton at right back, but it isn't going to be a frequent line up. I think that Emerton can still be a good player to have in the squad and unless we were offered over £2 million for him, I wouldn't think about selling. -

Today's result really puts us in the running for European football next season and maybe the Champions League. I was confident that we could win this game at the start of the week, but after the Real result, I thought Arsenal would be up for this. Apparently they didn't start playing until the 70th minute. It sounds like Nelsen and Todd was excellent at the back again, Tugay, Savage and Reid were excellent in midfield and Bellamy caused problems all afternoon with his pace. Hopefully we won't respond to this result like we did the United one and go on to lose the next couple of games. Well done lads, keep it up and we have every chance of playing in the Champions League next season. -
That was an important win last night. Tugay looked class and it was good too see Bellamy scoring again. His second was great, after a good cross by Peter. Thats the kind of difference that he makes to our team. Imagine how many goals he would have had if he stayed fit!

This is a must win game, to get our season back on track. Sunderland are playing well at the moment and even though they are going down, they are showing great fight, like on Sunday and against Chelsea, so we have to be up for it. We should be too good for them, but I thought that about the last two games! 2-1 Rovers-Bellamy and Pongolle for Rovers. Lawrence for Sunderland.
-
I wouldn't be that keen on the Intertoto Cup, as it reduces players rest period and has caused some teams, who's squads aren't big enough to burn out. The idea of using the competition as pre-season training and matches is a good one. If the number of games have been cut down then better still. It could be a chance to give some of the fringe players to show their worth in competitive matches. I'd rather we qualified for Europe through our league position though. I'll trust Hughes' decision.

We have taken a huge step backwards since we beat United a couple of weeks ago. I think the players have gotten into the comfort zone a bit and aren't working as hard as they were before the United game. With the way that we were playing a few weeks back, you would have looked at the last two games and thought that Rovers would have gotten three points from at least one of them. I was predicting European football, but if we keep going the way we are, then we'll be lucky if we stay in the top half of the league! Hughes needs to give them a roasting and have them in on Monday, working their bo**ocks off. -
[Archived] Tugay - Who Next?
RoyRover replied to RovertheHill's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
IMO D'Alessandro woul dbe a great player to have in the team. He has shown glimpses of what he can do already. I couldn't believe that he went to Portsmouth on loan in the first place. I can see Pompey going down and they will have to get rid of players. D'Alessandro won't be hanging about and would certainly be worth considering. If he shows that he is capable of playing in the Premiership, then why shouldn't we go after him? Wolfsburg may put a huge transfer price on him, which could be a deterent. Also, if Pompey do go down, I would mind the likes of Gary O'Neill, Matt Taylor, Linvoy Primus and some others being looked at. -
[Archived] Tugay - Who Next?
RoyRover replied to RovertheHill's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
Does Bentley have the defensive discipline and strength to play in midfield? I'm not convinced. I think that he could be brilliant in a diamond formation in midfield, with Bentley at the top of it. However, for this to work we would need a top defensive midfielder and we haven't got one. -
[Archived] Tugay - Who Next?
RoyRover replied to RovertheHill's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
I don't know if David Bentley would be able to fill the Tugay role. I see him more of a second striker than a creative midfielder. This is certainly an area of the team that Hughes needs to address in the summer. -

I thought he looked good when he came on against United in the Carling Cup. He never seems to be able to play that way consistently and rarely beats his man one-on-one. I do rate him and think that he is a valuable member of the team. -
A very disappointing result to say the least, which takes the gloss off Wednesday's win in some ways. We have been on a great run and it had to come to end at some point, it is just a shame that had to be in this manner. I agree with people who say that the team must be knackered, because they have played a lot of football of late and it seemed like it caught up with them. A full week without a game should be enough time for the players to recharge, because they will have to be ready for a big game from Everton. I think yesterday highlighted in some respect the dangers of qualifing for Europe. We don't have a big enough squad to cope with all the games that would entail, forgetting what happens on the domestic front. Hughes would have to bring in four or five bodies for the team to be able to sustain a challenge in all competitions.
-
We have to follow up Wednesday's great win, with three points against the Baggies. If we do and results go our way, then we could be one point off Spurs. WBA have been fighting for survival again this season and I think that they lost their last game. We are going into this game full of confidence and with the run that we are on, we should be able to win. It will be interesting to see what team Hughes puts out. I can see him going with the same team from Wednesday, although I'd like to see Pongolle and Emerton start instead of Kuqi and Tugay. Rovers win 3-1, Pongolle, Pedersen and Bentley to score fro us, with Quashie scoring on his debut.
