I'd be inclined to play Matteo at centre back myself, with Gresko coming in at left back. It is too big and important a game for an untried defender to make his debut in. There is no doubt that it will be a difficult game for us tomorrow, but we are capable of getting a result. I hope that we play a 4-3-3, rather than a 4-5-1. Here's to a 2-1 Rovers victory.

[Archived] Northern Ireland 1-0?
RoyRover replied to adopted scouser's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
I didn't really watch the match, I was more concerned with the Republic blowing their chances of going to the World Cup, against France. Fair play to Northern Ireland and Lawrie Sanchez, because of the little that I did see of the game, Northern Ireland seemed to want it more and played as a team. I found Kenny Samson's remarks on Sky Sports, about SGE looking at the roof of the bench and having a whistle hilarious. What a fool! Ian Wright was also p!ssed off and was having trouble venting his anger, without swearing! -
Robbie Savage is a total embarrassment.

I read the Da Vinci Code while on holiday. It's a very good book, with a great story. The only problem is that it is poorly written and total nonsense, in terms of it being factual. -

It sounds like it was yet another bad day at the office for Rovers. Even the dogs in the street knew that Baros was going to score on his debut and he didn't let us down. According to Matt Le Tissier Villa had two or three other clear opportunities to score. We were supposed to have done better when Jansen came on, but without causing Villa any real problems. Kuqi had two good chances, but f**ked them both up. It was obvious before Kuqi signed, that he wasn't up to it and his performances so far, despite how hard he works, have proven this. I hope that today's performance has made it clear to Hughes that some of the players at the club, aren't good enough and signings need to be made before the deadline, if we are to have a successful season. -

I'm not very confident about this one. We are missing some players, discipline is a problem and Aston Villa look like a decent side, especially now that they have signed Milan Baros. I can see him scoring on his debut. The big question is who will play right back? Mokoena, Taylor or Reid? Emerton seems to be getting a lot of flack, but what I've seen of him this season, I think that he has looked quite good. He and Neill have being playing well down the right, but unfortunatley this won't happen tomorrow. I hope that Rovers prove me wrong and win 2-1. -

I watched the highlights on Football First last night and I thought we looked good. Pedersen is really starting to shine and he played some fantastic balls into the box. Kuqi should have scored from one of them and that is the type of chance that a top forward would have scored. Emerton also should have had a penalty, because he was definately pulled back. There seemed to be a lot more people at the game yesterday, what was the attendance? -

Quite a disappointing result, when you consider how the game was suppose to have panned out. It sounds like we totally dominated the match, without ever really threatening much. Spurs didn't offer much going forward and that makes it more annoying that we didn't get three points which would have been brilliant. It seems like Andy Todd is going to be in bother, even though it was Lucas who was sent off. What could be more damaging is Mokoena playing in the centre of defence, in his absence! Tony Gayle was saying that Shefki Kuqi worked hard up front, but doesn't have the class to get us the goals we will need. He thinks that we need a striker, so I hope Hughes is listening, because we still haven't got a cutting edge up front. -

For a number of seasons now, Spurs have talked about being a big club, with big ambitions, but they never won or qualified for anything. Under Martin Jol though, they have ben playing very good football and recently have bought in some class players, like Defoe, Davids, Mido, Carrick and Robinson. They are starting to look like a team who can challenge for Europe. We have always been evenly matched with Spurs and hopefully we will win tonight. We are at home, we had a good win on Saturday, we should have a lot of confidence from the win and Spurs are missing a lot of players. Hughes will probably stick with the same lineup from Saturday, mainly because we won with it, but also because we don't have many other options. Rovers to win 2-1, with Reid and Kuqi scoring. -
[Archived] Poll - Falling Attendances.
RoyRover replied to Tris's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
For what it's worth I think that the drop in attendance may come down to the fact that for the last two seasons, Rovers have played so badly and people aren't willing to go and see a poor side. I'm not sure what our attendance figures were when we came back into the Premiership, but I'm sure that they are a lot larger than they are now. The fact that we had come back to the Premiership would have sent people to watch, but also because we were playing well, getting to a cup final in our first season and then finishing tenth and then finishing sixth in the table. We have gone backwards since and as such so have our crowds. If Hughes is able to put out a successful side, that wins and plays good football, then I'm sure that attendances could rise again, especially when you consider that we have pretty cheap tickets. -
It was great to get our first win of the season and to win it with those stunning goals, makes it even better. I watched the highlights on Football First and we seemed to play quite well. Lucas Neill looked very good and Pedersen seemed to play very well, even without his goal. Kuqi had some chances, which he will need to put away, if he is to stay in the team and if we are to do well this season.
-
Ah bo**ocks, that's all we need, our 'star' striker injury after a week of the season. I heard that it was his ankle that was the trouble and that is why he didn't play for Wales. Hopefully he will be alright for Saturday where we need a good performance and a win.

RoyRover replied to Philly Rover ®'s topic in Football Messageboard Archive
It is important that we have young players coming through the ranks, because hopefully one of them could be the new Damian Duff. Joe Garner and Matt Derbyshire seem to be the most promising players, outside the first team and Sergio Peters seems quite promising by all accounts. Jemal Johnson made a couple of appearances last season and I hope that some of the other players get a chance. I think that our league position, will dictate how often the young players play. -
If by searching in Muslim areas the authorities are able to find those responsible for this hideous crime, then I don't think anyone will care or be offended by any implications that would follow.

I've got an i-Pod, but is a second generation one and has got a lot wrong with it. The battery life has died considerably, it stalls when I listen to certain tracks and when I plug into one of my computers, it crashes it. There is no doubt that i-Pods look cool and a very user friendly, but they are very fragile. -

I'm reading Sea Biscuit at the moment and it is very good. Other books that I've read recently which are worth a look are Bleachers and The King Of Torts both by John Grisham. -

This is going to be another tough game for Rovers, against a Spurs side who have been playing well and are challenging for Europe. It would be great to finish the season with a win and last time we played them on the last day of the season, we stuffed them. So a repeat result would be great, but just a win would do me. A very optimistic 2-1 win for Rovers. -
I was disappointed with the result today, because I have grown to really dislike Birmingham and a win against them would have been great. But it sounds like they were the better side, so fair enough. At least Stead and that should do his confidence some good, but if he had scored with that one-on-one with Taylor, it would have been even better.
-
I would love nothing more than to beat Birmingham today. They are a team that I've grown a great disliking to and to finish above them in the league would end the season on a high. Steve Bruce does my head in and after the whole Robbie Savage saga, I'm sure that our players would love to give them a good beating. The last two results have been disappointing in that they were games that we really should have won. Rovers to win 3-1, with Stead, Pedersen and Reid getting the goals.

With Hughes looking to get rid of alot of the deadwood in the squad, I can the likes of Amorusp, Short, Douglas, Flitcroft and Gray being shown the door. When reading other peoples posts, I've realised that by getting rid of some of these defenders, we still have plenty left in the squad, like Nissa, Matteo, McEveley and Gresko, who can all play at left back and in the centre of defence. So we don't need to concentrate on that area. A right back, as cover for Neill would be welcome. Moreover, with players like Reid, Savage, Tugay and Mokoena, as well as any additions that Hughes brings, all being able to play in the centre of midfield, I can see Flitcroft being let go. His wages could be used elsewhere and on better equivalents like Stephen Appiah. Up front, it looks like we will have a whole host of strikers to chose from. I would let the likes of Gallagher and Johnson go on loan for the season, so they can get more first team action. With the possibility of Tomislav Sokota and Benni McCarthy/Craig Bellamy joining, then I think that Paul Dickov will be used more as a squad player, along with Jansen. I hope that Stead is paired with any new strikers or that the new strikers form our strike force. I would like to see Jansen, Stead and any new strikers as being the first choice players. -
I was qite disappointed with this result, because I felt that it was a game that we should have won. It certainly seems, that on the balance of play, that we had the better of it and could have won it. A win would also have moved us further away from Birmingham, whom desperate to finish higher than.
-
I'm confident that we can win this one. Our defence has been superb and it will need to be, because WBA have been creating a lot of chances, but just not taking them. Against Middlesborough, WBA could have had three goals, before Middlesborough even scored. Stead deserves a goal for all the work that he has been doing up front and he has been so unlucky. He and Pedersen will score in a 2-0 victory.

Well now that there are no Old Firm games left this season and Celtic have more or less wrapped the league up (YES!), Ferguson can sit back and relax and see what a good decision he made.

He had more than a few bad games, he was shockingly bad up until his injury. I was devastated when we signed him and for the first half of the season my fears were justified. However, I can say that he has really improved since he has come back and it sounds like he had another good game today against SWP. -

I'm quite disappointed with a point. If we had won this, then we would have had a great chance to finish in the top ten. The first half sounds like it was pretty dull, but we did a lot better in the second and had some decent chances. At least our defence was solid again and this will be the area that Hughes won't have to strengthen during the summer. Again, it seems like the thing that we are missing the most is a natural goal scorer.
