    Fa Youth Cup Draw

Rovers have been drawn at home against Spurs in the 3rd Round of the FA Youth Cup. The date and whether the game will be played at either Ewood or Christie Park, has yet to be decided. The game has to be played before Saturday the 17th December
  3. Mark Hughes has decided to omit Lucas Neill and Brett Emerton from the squad to meet Manchester City tomorrow. Hughes understandably believes that they both need time to recover from their World Cup qualification, games against Uraguay, in South America and Australia. However there is better news, in that Ryan Nelsen, Robbie Savage and Michael Gray are is expected to be fit in time for the game. Rovers Squad: Friedel, Enckelman, Thompson, Pedersen, Savage, Tugay, Nelsen, Reid, Khizanishvili, Kuqi, Todd, Bellamy, Gray, Bentley, Dickov, Matteo, Mokoena, Gresko, Jansen, Flitcroft.

    City Preview.

The season kicks off again tomorrow, after another international break, when Rovers take on City at the City of Manchester Stadium. Rovers approach the game in good form, lying 4th in the current Premiership Form Table with 4 wins and 2 defeats in their last 6 games. Rovers goal scoring powers have also been highlighted with 12 league goals in these 6 games, second only to Chelsea in respect of goals scored. Manchester City are 9th in the Form table with 8 goals in their last 6 games. Ricky's Match Preview

  9. I'll second that Bryan. No disrespect to Big Colin, but being a great players doesnt mean that they will be good managers or coaches. That said, he hasnt had a great deal to work with at Blackpool.
  10. When I watched the game, from the BBE I must admit that I thought he should have got the ball as it crossed the box. However after seeing the replay on MOTD, my opinion changed. It was a scrappy goal, and I dont think he could have cut it out before the Charlton player got to it.

    Classy Rovers

Even the Lancashire rain storms couldn’t dampen the celebrations as Bret Emerton lit the fuse as early as the second minute, to a display of entertaining football that the Rovers founders on the 5th November 1875 would have been proud of. The atmosphere at Ewood generated by pure football, were reminiscent of days gone bye, with both forwards and both wingers scoring, I suspect there were no greater gasps or cheers that emanated during any fireworks display on Saturday night. For the seventeen and a half thousand home supporters, who had braved the weather, this was a display of attacking football at it’s best, orchestrated by the midfield maestro, Tugay, who was ably assisted by Reid, feeding Emerton and Pedersen on the flanks, to provide some wing play not seen at Ewood since the departure of Duff and co. Make no mistake, Charlton are no underdogs, sitting third in the league prior to the game and undefeated away all season, their travelling support, of no more that four hundred, would have expected at least a draw out of this fixture, however their team of aspiring England Internationals, being watched by the England Manager from the stand, were outplayed by pure football by a Rovers team, that is quickly loosing it’s “bully boys” tag. After the historic 2-1 away win at Manchester United, when the pundits praised Rovers attacking prowes, Mark Hughes’ is bringing back the good times to Ewood; how unfortunate that we now have to wait, until the 3rd December before they run out again at Ewood. 12. match report by Scotty Top, top performance today from the lads. What a good game. I was worried beforehand. I thought we'd miss Savage's running in midfield and that Tugay's lack of mobility would be picked off by Charlton's 5-man midfield. How wrong I was! Anyway, Reid came in for Savage and Dickov was prefered up front to Kuqi - otherwise it was the same team that played Chelsea last week. We started off like a house on fire. I've been critical in the past of the way we've started our home games but no complaints today. Within two minutes Emerton collected the ball at the edge of the area on the right. Charlton's full back forced him wide but Emerton managed to wrap his foot round the ball and hit a fantastic shot into the top corner of the net. Charlton's keeper looked like he thought it was going wide - big mistake. Fifteen minutes later we were two up. A cross from the right deflected of a Charlton player and found Dickov in acres of space on the edge of the six yard box. He looked suspiciously off-side, even before the deflection, but he finished with aplomb. Cracking header. We just controlled the game after that. Our passing was great and Charlton didn't have a sniff - right up until Gray had to go off on about the half hour mark with an injury (looked like his hamstring, could be out for a while). Mokoena came on and went to right back with Neill switching to left back, but we didn't look at all comfortable, and it was no surprise when Charlton scored from a move down our left. Neill seemed to let Rommadahl (sp?) go, he hit a decent low cross to the far post, and Hughes got there in front of Mokoena to stab the ball past Friedel. Charlton suddenly found an extra yard and put us under some pressure for the first time in the game, but thankfully we held out until half time and went in deservedly 2-1 up. We started the second half superbly. Within five minutes we should have had a penalty for a completely blatant handball and we won numerous corners and free-kicks around Charlton's box. We didn't get the breakthrough straight away though, but we plugged away, kept playing fantastic footy, and eventually got our reward with a great goal. A pass from the back to the right wing was flicked on skillfully by Emerton straight into the path of the on-rushing Reid. He hit a superb low cross to the edge of the six yard box where Pedersen, running in at pace, got a deft touch with his wrong foot to score a cracking team goal. OK, the shot got a deflection but I'm sure it would have gone in anyway. Game over you'd think but, credit to Charlton, they came back and gave us a few frights. It didn't help that Todd had to go off with what appeared to be a knee injury (again, could be out for a while) and we failed to re-organise our defence. Hardly surprising though considering that Pedersen was playing left back at this point and Neill was an emergency centre back. Luckily for us though Friedel was in top form, he saved point blank chances from Heriderson (more sp?) and Bothroyd, as well as keeping out a couple of long-range efforts as well. For all Charlton tried to get a goal back though we looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Another good move saw Kuqi (sub for Dickov late on) winning a flick-on, a Charlton defender getting beaten by the bounce of the ball, and Bellamy tucking the ball away showing the class he has. And so it finished 4-1, and let no-one be in any doubt, we totally deserved it. I'll start at the front because that's where our real class is. Bellamy was, yet again, excellent today. His runnnig off the ball is fantastic, he's also got a great first touch, and he passes as clinically as anyone in the team. And, just like Henry does down the left at Arsenal with Pires and Ashley Cole, he's linking up superbly on the right with Emerton and Neill. For the whole game Charlton simply didn't have any answers to the threat we posed down their left, and it was no surprise that two of our goals came from moves down that flank. In addition, Dickov worked his nuts off and scored a cracxking header, off-side or not. In midfield Tugay was majestic. As I left the game I was going to give my man of the match to Emerton, but seeing the highlights again on TV it just showed how instrumental Tugay was. Considering Charlton had a 5 man midfield you'd think they'd have assigned one of them to close Tugay down, thankfully though they didn't, and Tugay had the time and space to control the game from start to finish. We passed the ball brilliantly today and Tugay was a huge part of that. He looks fit, full of running, and back to the sort of form he showed 2 or 3 years ago for us. Man of the match. Reid filled in well for Savage, put himself about when he had to, and passed the ball better than he normally does. Emerton was terrific down the right - it just shows the confidence a player gets from scoring an early goal. He could be vital to our chances this season. The way he links up with Neill and Bellamy is such a threat to the opposition. Pedersen didn't do too much going forward, apart from score of course (how many times have we said that?!), but he worked hard defensively and helped reduce Gray's injury to a minor convenience. At the back Todd and Zurab looked composed, clever, and controlled. Zurab in particular showed himself to be a great footballer, he frequently took the ball out of defence and started off attacks. Gray looked a threat before his injury, and the whole back four look troubled afterwards until half-time. Neill played in 3 different positions during the match and looked classy in all of them. He's been a revelation this season and it's not unrealistic that the likes of Milan may be looking at him. Finally, Friedel made 3 or 4 great saves when he had to in the second half. Charlton were overrun today. Their 5-man midfield was simply out-passed by our 4-man midfield (with thanks to our defence). Instaed of getting close to Tugay and stifiling his work they sat off him and allowed him to dictate play. He did it brilliantly. And up front we had the one class striker on the pitch - take a bow Bellamy. We were brilliant today. Long may it continue. 13. Robbie Savage, who hasn’t trained all week due to a leg injury, is doubtful for tomorrows game against Charlton at Ewood Park. Ryan Nelsen who has missed the last 2 games due to a knee injury is also likely to miss out. Match Preview Click Here If you’ve got a free morning, top of the table Rovers under 18s take on second place Liverpool tomorrow morning at the academy, kick off 11am. So far this season Rovers have only conceded 9 goals, but they will be tested tomorrow by the leagues top scorers, Liverpool, who have hit the back of the net 26 times this season. Rovers are reported to be giving trials to Norwegian teenage striker Karim Aoudia and Ghanaian, 19 year old midfielder, Anthony Annan. This will be Aoudia’s second trial at the club following an impressive trial at the club during the summer. Rovers Slovakian left back Vratislav Gresko has been recalled to the Slovakian squad for the world cup play off against Spain.

  15. Posted by Exiled in Toronto in Carling Cup topic cut and pasted here In the absence of a Charlton match thread, I'll put this here - mods feel free to move. I for one do not see Charlton (league home game) as a walk in the park. They are a good team and have finished significantly above us the last two seasons, and are off to a flyer away from home so far. It galls me to see them doing better than us as during the 2nd division days I always saw them as London's equivalent of us. Some great days in the past, but not having the fan base or the infrastructure to ever rise again. Of course things got a lot worse for them just as Jack was changing our history. While we were winning the league, they didn't even have a ground or many fans and seemed down and out. Without a Jack figure, they have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, got a good tidy ground, a good manager, some excellent young players coming through, and have spent quite wisely. So while many on this board think that we are punching over our weight, thanking heavens that our faceless owners add another 10% to the income line, I personally don't see why we can't do what Charlton have done and compete at this level without being seen as a chartity case. Jack left us a terrific infrastructure, we just need an abitious but still prudent ownership. Anyway, I digress: 2-2 (Bellamy-2; Hales, Bartram) 17,231
  16. Well if Rovers can make this game their 5th home win on the trot, maybe some more will jump on the Rovers bandwagon
  17. copied from the history section of this site The public school background of many of those present (even those who had not been to public school had at least been to the local grammar school, meaning this was a meeting of wealthy and educated people) became evident when the strip to for the club to play in was chosen. It was chosen to base the shirt on that of ex-public schoolboy side Old Malverians but to change the green to a Cambridge blue colour as a reference to the old University of many of those present. 18. When Rovers run out on to Ewood Park on Saturday against Charlton, it will be a milestone in their illustrious history. The 5th November, 130 years to the date that John Lewis and Arthur Constantine called a meeting at the St Leger Hotel in King William Street, Blackburn to form Blackburn Rovers Football Club. Although the Rovers had began to take shape back in 1868 when wealthy industrialist John Lewis moved to Blackburn from Market Drayton, it wasn’t until Lewis started to discuss his passion for Association Football with a former pupil of Shrewsbury public school, Mr Arthur Constantine, that the thought of Rovers was conceived. Constantine shared Lewis’s enthusiasm for the game and together they decided to form their own team and called a meeting at the St Leger Hotel in King William Street, Blackburn which took place on 5th November 1875. At that meeting on the 5th November 1875, when seventeen men attended, a motion to form a club was carried unanimously, resulting in the birth of Blackburn Rovers Football Club. Happy Birthday for Saturday - Rovers.
