  3. No Bruce will play the versatile centre back he signed from Rovers. Who remembers Bruce saying how versatile a certain player he signed from us was, in being able to play anywhere in defence.
  4. BRISA PRESS RELEASE BRISA Receives backing from Jack Straw and Wayne Hemingway Fans of Blackburn Rovers - founder members and former winners of the Premiership - have today announced the formation of an Independent Supporters Association, with the backing of Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. The Ewood Park regulars are joining the swelling ranks of independently minded fans across the UK who are seeking greater recognition within their clubs and the wider football community. All Blackburn Rovers fans are invited to the free, public launch of BRISA at Blues Bar, Ewood Park, on Thursday October 27 at 7.30pm. Blackburn Rovers Independent Supporters Association (BRISA) will campaign on key issues affecting the club and football in general, which need addressing for the good of the game. National issues include: Players' wages Activity and remuneration of agents The increasing disruption to a regular “Saturday at 3pm” fixture list by Sky TV The cost of attending football matches, both home and away for individuals and, in particular, children and families Specific issues relating to Blackburn Rovers: Declining attendances at Ewood Park and other clubs Supporter representation within the club Transparency from the owners of Blackburn Rovers, particularly regarding the Jack Walker Trust Improve the flow of information between the club and the fans, in both directions To promote Blackburn Rovers positively within the media, both local and national To promote a community spirit and greater sense of belonging at Ewood Park Neil Thornton, BRISA spokesman, said, “We expect Blackburn Rovers to seek our opinions and advice on issues which affect supporters. We have a positive and constructive dialogue at a high level within the club and we wish that to continue. “Whatever the issue, we intend to make the views of our members known to the club and to the media when necessary. “BRISA is proud to be a democratic forum for debate and discussion and we want to bring all Rovers’ fans together, with the aim of giving supporters a powerful voice. “Our members come from a wide cross-section of Rovers’ fans. We have members whose support for the team goes back to the 1940s. “As supporters of one of the world’s oldest clubs our collective knowledge and love of football goes back through generations of Blackburn men and women.” Thornton emphasised that, while BRISA is fully independent of the club, members aim to work for the benefit of Rovers and will often share similar goals to the board of directors at Ewood Park. He said, “The launch meeting is an ideal opportunity to find out what issues are being discussed in the stands. We can take everyone’s views to help shape our campaigning agenda and to focus our efforts on achievable goals. “We encourage anyone who has something to offer, to become a member and get involved.” The launch of BRISA has been backed by Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, long-time Rovers supporter and vice president of the club. He said, “It is important for Rovers to engage with the fans to help move the club forward. “Rovers fans are some of the most enthusiastic and committed supporters in the country and I feel sure BRISA will be successful in highlighting local and national issues in a positive way.” Wayne Hemingway, lifelong Rovers fan and founder of the iconic fashion label Red or Dead, is also backing BRISA. He says, “Rovers are a family club, with proper values and an unthreatening atmosphere. “It’s a club that underpins the town’s values and the fans have a great sense of humour. “We’re a small town that has a big club. What more could you ask for? “I love my home town, I love my Rovers and so do all my kids – and they have been brought up in the south!” ******************************************************************** Despite the modern stadium at Ewood Park, equal if not better than many large city stadiums, whenever Blackburn Rovers hit the headlines they are stereotyped as a club from a traditional Lancashire mill town with cobbled terraced streets, engulfed in a smoke hazed background from industrial chimneys. A small town club that has fought above its stature since it was founded in 1875, drawing its support from the local community and not from the urban sprawl of some city conurbation. The core support of the Blackburn Rovers of today is still made up of local born and bred people, which has given the club it’s renowned family atmosphere; and it’s from that background that a newly formed Blackburn Rovers Independent Supporters Association (BRISA) is to be launched on the 27th October 2005. A press release by BRISA today has invited All Blackburn Rovers supporters to the free public launch of BRISA at the Blues Bar, Ewood Park, on Thursday October 27 at 7.30pm If you can't attend BRISA still need your views, please contact BRISA on: admin@roversisa.co.uk Or visit the BRISA web site. www.roversisa.co.uk Download a Membership Application Form Make a donation at Roversisa.co.uk or direct to the BRISA bank account: Account Name: Blackburn Rovers Independent Supporters Association Account Number: 32791501 Sort Code: 40 37 25 Bank: HSBC

    Zurab Appeal Today

An FA disciplinary commission will sit today to hear an appeal submitted by Rovers on behalf of Zurab Khizanishvili. After first indicating a penalty and then awarding a free kick, referee M Halsey sent off the Blackburn defender Khizanishvili for aledgedly fouling, Liverpool's Djibril Cisse in a non scoring position on the edge of the area. As one of brfcs.co.uk members, bazza, stated in one of the topics.
  7. Match Report by Bellamy 11 I thought we started the best of the two teams. We kept the ball reasonably well and the Liverpool defence were very worried in possession against two harrying strikers who don't give you a minutes rest. Kuqi is never going to score many spectacular individual goals or outpace defenders but he gives them other types of problems and he was effective with Dickov doing the same thing. He also won his fair share of headers. I'll have to see a replay before I comment on the sending off. It looked a definite foul and had it been at the other end no doubt we'd be bemoaning the "weak" ref for giving a home decision had he not sent the player off. After that it was always going to be a case of 1 point or nothing. Kuqi's game doesn't work when he's so isolated up front on his own. He needs a partner or runners from midfield. We didn't have the set-up to provide him with either. We defended well for the main. Savage was our best player. He made us competitive despite the fact that MGP, Tugay and Bentley all did next to nothing. The defence were all strong, and Toddy didn't look too bad for his lack of first-team action. Will be interesting to see what happens now and whether he will regain the captains armband. We spotted how the goal was going to happen before it went in. Cisse was ready for the shift but Blackburn weren't. It didn't appear to go in a corner. I know he hits them hard, but I'd really expect a goalkeeper of Brad's quality to at least get behind it. Seemed to be beaten all too easily. I saw enough to suggest that with a full strength side we should be capable of a top ten place. It took Liverpool some time to get into the game. This will partly be down to the fact that we were playing their reserves, but we should also take some credit. The sending off killed the game as a spectacle and practically ended our chances of winning. Friedel - Some decent stops but suspect for the goal and didn't catch a lot. 6 Neill - Solid enough and some excellent timewasting. 7 Zura - Unlucky to be sent off but maybe should have let cisse go out wide. 6 Nelsen - Composed as usual. 8 Gray - Gave the ball away for the red card. Mixture of good and bad. 7 Bentley - Didn't do anything really. Couldn't hold onto the ball. 5 Savage - Immense pressuring. Is becoming more valuable with every game. 8 Tugay - Like at Old Trafford, didn't really do enough. 6 MGP - Some decent touches in the first half, and shouldn't have been replaced by Emerton, but still poor. 6 Dickov - Was doing well before being sacrificed. 7 Kuqi - Won a lot in the air and worked tirelessly up front on his own. A bigger threat than Stead. 7 I think we'll be alright, but in order to make the most of our season we need to keep Bellamy fit and win more of our home games. Liverpool: Reina, Josemi (Luis Garcia 60), Carragher, Traore, Warnock (Riise 74), Finnan, Sissoko, Alonso, Zenden, Crouch (Morientes 66), Cisse. Subs Not Used: Hamann, Carson. Goals: Cisse 75. Rovers: Friedel, Neill, Khizanishvili, Nelsen, Gray, Bentley, Tugay (Mokoena 67), Savage, Pedersen (Emerton 67), Dickov (Todd 35), Kuqi. Subs Not Used: Enckelman, Reid. Sent Off: Khizanishvili (33). Booked: Bentley, Neill, Savage. Att: 44,697. Ref: M Halsey (Lancashire).

    Liverpool Preview

Anfield hasn't been a good hunting ground for Rovers in the league for some time, the last victory being back in September 1993, when they won 1-0 with a goal from Mike Newell. Yet there have been happy times at Anfield no more than the 14th May 1995, when despite loosing 2-1, Rovers and Liverpool supporters joined together to party the night away in celebration of Rovers winning the Premiership. Liverpool have failed to win five of their six League matches this season however Rovers will need to be careful if they are not to suffer from a back lash to Liverpool's last home game when they were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea. Whilst history would dictate a Liverpool win, Rovers go to Anfield on a high after beating Manchester United at Old Trafford for the first time in over 40 years, so who knows, maybe there could be a reverse of fortunes as well at Anfield. Whilst Robbie Savage will be available following his suspension, it would appear that Craig Bellamy wont have recovered from his knee injury and Shefki Kuqi will once again lead the attack. 13. Or, if Bellamy isnt fit, is Hughes going to risk one of his other three strikers in the reserves.
  14. Match Report by Wild Irish Rover The reserves hustled and bustled and played most of the football on a night where two of the four goals scored were flukes and both sides seemed lacking in real quality where it was needed - in front of goal. Rovers could easily have gone in at half time three goals to the good, having thumped the woodwork with long range efforts twice and spurned tap in chances on other occasions. However, a mystery penalty decision (clearly ball to hand) not even seen by the referee (but flagged by an over zealous linesman) meant we finished the half trailing 1-0. Jemal Johnson showed some fine control at times, although unfortunately not of his mouth, hence a booking for dissent. Thompson bossed midfield and caused many of the geordie onlookers I spoke to at half time to berate their lack of bite in the middle. The abiding memory of the half was of long ball tactics, with Johnson and Barker straining to catch the ball as it fizzed past. Same story into the second half. Newcastle made a substitution and the midfield became even more bypassed. The tide seemed to be turning in Newcastle's favour for a while, with Richard Lee having to make a couple of smart stops when Newcastle got sharp shots on target. On 67 minutes Rovers' Andy Taylor made a penetrating run into the Newcastle box, only to be dispossessed by a defender who knocked the ball wide to Ameobi who found number 7 Martin Brittain racing down the left wing. Brittain's hammered cross from the left flew past a static Lee into the goal. 2-0 Newcastle. Rovers started to put together a few more passes after that and equalised through Gary Harkins who lashed in a rebound following good work from Johnson on the left. The game didn't really get going after that, although it was no surprise when Barker hooked in a loose ball to make it 2-2 with a couple of minutes to go. Overall assessment: Rovers well worth the draw, but neither team did anything to deserve a win.
  15. Late goals by Harkins 77 minutes and Barker 83 minutes, salvaged a point for the Rovers reserves after they had gone 2 – 0 down to Newcastle. A penalty in the 35 minute by Michael Chopra after Thompson had handled on the line gave Newcastle's Reserves a half-time lead against Rovers at Kingston Park this evening. Thompson returning from injury received a yellow card for handling the ball, that resulted in the penalty. Newcastle went further ahead in the 67 minute when Brittain’s left wing cross went over Lee’s head, however Rovers battled back with a 20 yard shot from Harkins and a looping miss hit chip from Barker that went over the keepers head. Final score Newcastle 2 – Blackburn 2. Rovers : Lee, Kane, Taylor, Harkins, Barr, Nolan, Treacy, Thompson, Johnson, Barker, Peter. Subs: Byrom, Fielding, Stopforth, Welch, Thomson.
  16. Robbie Savage beat snooker’s world number 16, Ian McCulloch 3 – 2 in a pool challenge match, at BBC Lancashire's Open Centre, set up as a prelude to next week's Snooker Grand Prix at Preston. Savage is quoted as saying " The win at Old Trafford was big but this is the greatest victory of my career." More Details - Radio Lancashire Link

    Player Gossip

Preston manager Billy Davies has confirmed on North Ends website that he recently made an unsuccessful enquiry regarding the signing of Rovers striker Matt Jansen. Jay McEveley currently on loan to Ipswich is considering switching his allegiance to Scotland, despite having already played for England at Under 21 level. McEveley whose grandfather is Scottish, qualifies to play for Scotland after FIFA changed the rules, allowing players under the age of 21 to switch international allegiance. Rovers striker, Paul Gallagher, is making an impact with Stoke City on and off the field. Not only has he been knocking in some vital goals during his loan spell, he has also got involved in the Potteries campaign to stop smoking, recording anti smoking messages, that are transmitted on local radio. Former Rovers midfielder Alan Mahon, currently playing for Wigan Athletic, is being linked with a loan move back to Ipswich. Sunderland’s Jon Stead who left Rovers in the Summer, has withdrawn from the England Under 21 squad as a result of a hip injury.
