  1. GAV I couldn't count the number of times I've eaten a whole fish of any sort and never come across this at home or abroad. If I was served fish still with its guts in I would without doubt complain. I would think there are three issues here: Health and safety How to deal with the gut on your plate Unexpected by the huge majority of diners At the very least Debs should have been warned when ordering. Just reading your post made me feel queasy and I doubt if I could have eaten anything after such an experience. I'll happily eat offal if I know what I've ordered but not if it just spills on to my plate!! Hope you didn't pay?
  2. Fine ABBEY feel free to carry on. Eight words in your NFL thread compared with your inability to control your ranting across the entire message board at everyone and everything which doesn't fit your limited view of the world. This is a cycling thread. I won't be commenting again on anything other than cycling.
  3. Abbey I don't trawl your back catalogue those are posts you made in the last 2-3 days. I do have many better things to do than trawl your history. You can call me everything you wish but I think it's perfectly clear to all and sundry the image, language and demeanour you chose to display on here puts you in a very poor light.
  4. Spat dummies out? Sniddy? You call TJ out for having an opinion on everything yet feel it's fine for you to do so. I simply pointed out you apply one standard to yourself and another to others. I don't notice people commenting in your NFL thread - others leave alone threads which are of no real interest to them. You're right life is to short but read what you posted above and have a think about who needs to chill out. That news item is splashed so widely across the web it raises a smile the first time but not the 100th.
  5. Precisely the response, though fewer words, I anticipated.
  6. That's what I would expect from the Clog & Billcock, it's why we stopped going a couple of years back. I don't understand restaurant managers or owners, they must realise building a reputation takes time and losing it takes no more than an evening. Set your standards and prices from the outset so people know what to expect. Don't start with high quality food and service and then reduce both while increasing the price just because you've become successful - it's a fatal recipe. Surprised you felt the portions were small though, last time we went the servings were very generous. I wouldn't rush to an RVI these days; had a distinctly average meal at the one near Gargrave recently.
  7. I had one of those. We went September last year £250+ for 7. It was my wife's birthday so everyone had whatever they wanted. I went to pay at the till and got the standard "was everything all right for you?" I didn't answer and full marks to the manageress for interpreting this correctly. Basically four of us in the party are very good cooks and could have produced far superior food. I was given a £50 voucher and asked to come back midweek. I said that I'd go on a Friday or Saturday as anyone can cook well when it's quiet. Went back one Saturday about 2 months later. Food and service terrible even with a £50 discount!! I'll never go back. It's a great shame as the O&O was a breath of fresh. Now prices have doubled and quality halved.
  8. Cyclists get a lot of stick, for those who see it as a sport this is undeserved, and yes there are people on bikes who behave irresponsibly just like there are terrible car drivers. Last Sunday I rode the Tour de Yorkshire sportive which followed much of the route used by the pro race of the same name. This is not about me but to give perspective I rode 88 miles, climbed 8845 feet in terrible weather at an average of 11.6mph. I've ridden further but the climbing is almost three times my personal previous best. All day we were cheered by small groups in the morning and huge crowds in the afternoon. At times it was the only thing which kept me upright. On Sunday 5500 ordinary cyclists like me did this. We hauled ourselves up cat 3 and 4 climbs in front of thousands of people. It was AMAZING. Below are the words of a cyclist who was in those crowds. I like to think we showed a lot of people we are much more than a bunch of riders intent on blocking the roads. Quote: "One of the best bits of Sunday (for me, at least) was the crowd's respect and admiration for the sportive. They had come out to see the big guys, the cycling celebs, the Wiggins's and Sky, and whatever; revisit the TdF. PLUS ... they got Waves upon waves of ordinary lads and lasses. From superfit lycra clad to the "rather less streamlined"; eeeeeh, there were some generously padded crumple-zones on some of those riders. The numbers - 6000 (!!!!!) cyclists accepted out of ... (how many applicants?). And that these guys and lasses had battled through the foul weather earlier in the morning, still with energy to grin, or wave. And all that made many in "my" Ilkley crowd think. And talk. It left them in some awe. That's impact, lads and lasses."
  9. Ha, ha I thought it was you O2G!!!! I haven't been up Ventoux but from what I'm told it's not as tough as you might think. I have a friend who's best described as stout who rides it every summer. I think most cyclists can get up it just a question of how quickly!! First weekend of May I'm riding the Tour de Yorkshire sportive. My eldest boy asked me along with his mates. Found out this is 88 miles and 8800 feet of climbing. Never managed that height in one day before, my best would be around 5500, so finishing will be huge. Managed 5000 feet in 60 miles a month ago so I think it's doable provided the kids don't try to ride at silly speeds on the flat.
  10. If you're doing nothing this afternoon there's damn good bike race going on through Chorley. Nearest spot to Blackburn is Abbey Village and Wheelton. Apparently Sheephouse Lane over Rivington is really sorting them out.
  11. Anyone interested in watching the debut of Team Wiggins come along to the Chorley Grand Prix on Saturday. http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest-news/chorley-grand-prix-kicks-off-the-elite-road-series-on-saturday-164904 http://www.chorley.gov.uk/Pages/AtoZ/Chorley-Grand-Prix.aspx Race starts at 11.00 Forecast is good and it promises to be a very good day for all the family. There are also rides being organised from All Seasons Leisure Centre on Sunday. http://activenation.org.uk/olympic-medallist-designs-active-nation-chorley-cycle-ride-routes/
  12. Our film club choice for March was "What We Did On Our Holiday" written by Andy Hamilton and starring David Tennant, Billy Connolly, Rosamund Pike, Celia Imrie, Ben Miller and Emilia Jones. Quite brilliant and hugely entertaining.
  13. We popped in on Sunday evening and it was as good as ever. Being Mother's Day there was a special menu of £20 for two courses or £25 for three. That's probably a touch more than usual but understandable. Living locally we have quite a wide choice and currently if it's just a question of popping out to eat I would put the Royal Oak at the top of the list. Streets ahead of the Oyster and Otter and probably the Clog and Billycock - though we stopped going there 18 months ago as it went badly downhill. Same applies to the O&O last two meals have been very poor. The Royal Oak is good pub food, very good service and friendly atmosphere. I'll be surprised if you're disappointed.
  14. Almost past your house Baz http://chorley.gov.uk/Pages/AtoZ/Chorley-Grand-Prix.aspx http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/eliteroadseries
  15. Absolutely. I'm marshalling. First time I've done it!!!!!
  16. Well if it's road race time the British Cycling a Elite Road Race season opener comes to Chorley on Easter Saturday April 4th. This is a new race in the calendar and will be known as the Chorley Grand Prix. Five laps of a 23 mile course from Chorley to Rivington, over the top to Belmont, through Abbey Village, Wheelton, on to Euxton and back to Chorley. I know the name will make people laugh but do not underestimate the huge achievement of Chorley BC in getting this race to the area. 160 of the UK's elite cyclists will be competing.
  17. TBH I'm not sure I'd want to be there with 30,000 others!!! I love club riding but the very best is when it's just me, the bike, spare cycle shirt and a couple of T-shirts in the panniers for a week.
  18. I think timing has a lot to do with it. Whenever I've flown with the bike I've been the only cyclist. In the situations you describe I wouldn't take the bike or at least expect problems. When I've arrived at the airport in some instances they've actually been expecting me!!! I'm sure Majorca must be a nightmare with thousands of cyclists and I'd definetley hire. Same with an event like the Etap. We get the same problem with trains in the UK. 99% of the time it's no problem but if one is heading towards an event it will be difficult. I tend to go mid week as well. Mainly because it's cheaper.
  19. I haven't been to Majorca riding but do fly my bike around. If I was going to Majorca I'd hire rather than fly the bike out. Saying that bikes on planes work well. For example last summer I rode to Bordeaux, took a train to Nice and flew home. Prior to leaving I sent the box to Nice via courier. £30 on the plane and everything else as hand luggage - I travel VERY light. One big advantage of travelling with outsize luggage is after check in you go through separate security and your "luggage" is first off the plane and waiting for you in baggage reclaim. Provided total weight of bike and carrier is 30kg or less the cost is very reasonable. At least that's my experience. Bike boxes and bags can be expensive and its worth keeping an eye on eBay. I have a box and a bag. Got both for £50, the box new is over £500! Just a question of hitting lucky by keeping your eyes peeled.
  20. Saturday and Sunday were OK but didn't get enough miles in really. With poor and dangerous weekend weather of late I've only managed three rides over 70 miles since January. Got the Eden Valley classic in two weeks which is a beautiful but tough 60 miler and only 8 weeks till I ride the Tour de Yorkshire with my eldest boy. My lad told me yesterday the TdY is 10,000 feet of climbing over the 100 miles. I hope he's wrong because it means doubling my best ever for that distance!!!!!
  21. Didn't know that. Real accents then!
  22. New Season, Chorley. Don't, just don't. Asked for a glass of Pinot Grigio. Was told I could have the house white as "it's the same thing just in a different bottle." I pointed out the wine list offers Pinot by the glass "yes, but that means we have to open a bottle" Gobsmacked
  23. My wife watches Game of Thrones which means I see bits of it though I have no idea what the storyline is. For an American programme I've been a little surprised by the use of the "F" word and very surprised by the use of the "C" word. I had thought American TV more straight laced than that or is this the exception?
  24. My wife went recently went and came home raving about it.
