The offside rule was designed to stop forwards just standing in the box waiting for the ball and allowed for more exciting matches with timing being far more important. We know have a law of the game that has all the enjoyment of a speed camera. Being offside by a finger nail is not on the spirit of what was trying to be achieved and it now means that referees will defer every goal that isn’t a direct shot from behind play to a second referee. Don’t celebrate a goal until it has been triple checked. VAR isn’t the problem, it’s application is.

If we sign someone they usually get their own thread. If we look like signing someone then people provide speculative opinions - which results in complaints. Why are we letting him “get fit” if there is no interest in having first dibs if he can meet the fitness standard required? His ability have made him a top two division footballer. The only questionable things is his fitness. It’d he just like us to give him a one year deal to replace Rodwell. Again, we have far more pressing positions. Like replacing Reed’s energy and ability, a new centre back, a second striker, a goalkeeper.

For the record, he is not what we need, especially having signed Downing for his experience, and we certainly have greater priorities.

The only disappointment is that we are keeping (excuse the pun) the wrong one as reserve. If we sell Raya, we will be no better off as the replacement won’t have any competition either. We’ll still need another new keepers. If any of this is true then it just reinforces the fact that Mowbray doesn’t like having an unhappy bench. Personally I think a bench should be a pretty miserable place, unless the first XI are winning every game. It’s just the silly season rumour mill. Although I’d be equally annoyed if we end up giving him a new deal and selling it to fans that it’s something other than papering over the cracks. No matter what happens, we need a new first team keeper and a new number two. Upgrading Raya could answer one of those without selling him.
