Well that's not the ref's fault - Mclaughlin knows the rules. If it was a pull back/trip as described it's a red. He should take the risk that Toth bails him out.

Ref has to judge it a genuine attempt to get the ball for it not to be a red. If he has no chance of getting it - it's a red.

There were three of them altogether weren't there including Smallwood who were in a similar sort of position and got extensions because good old Tone didn't want them to feel left out.
