Funny thing is, Sterling has been playing way better than Rashford this season as well. Southgate’s pretty stubborn on the sly. I think when he’s questioned, he digs his heels in even harder.

I think it’s a perfectly legitimate thing to question, when the likes of Maguire and Phillips are being picked for England, when they aren’t for their clubs. It’s not like they’re the only show in town, either. Plenty of other players are playing more regularly and better than the above. It’s absolutely closer to favouritism than a meritocracy. My worry with Southgate has always been that he is too cautious.

He played for Northern Ireland and was on loan to us, I think, ha. Effectively a centrally contracted player, like in cricket 😏.
