[Archived] The Worst Ever Rovers Player?

Recommended Posts

How can there be 178 posts on this subject? There is only one worst ever player, Chris Brown, and there have been some bad 'uns.

Absolutely Al the fookin white male dummy named Chris Brown was paid around half a million per year for what to go without scoring a single goal shows how bent the current professional game is.

Jim was a bit of a cult hero at the time. Certainly the best header of a ball I've ever seen but we didn't really play to his strength - which was in the air. On the ground he wasn't the best by any means. His diving header against Norwich, when he came on as a sub, remains the best headed goal I think I've ever seen. For me, Frank Lord, was the worst I've seen but there are a number of contenders from that era - Les Chappell would certainly run him a close second. A little later there was John Aston who Iley signed to replace Waggy. Aston was playing from memory when we signed him.

Gestede was up there with Jim Fryatt for heading ability. Frank Lord, Les Chappell were terrible signings. They were at least a division above their ability levels. John Aston had been a decent player at Utd, in fact he was probably the man of the match in their European Cup Final win. He broke his leg shortly after that though and when he came to Rovers he was well past his best.

Gestede and Fryatt above Shearer for heading ability ?

Never in a million years ..

Never saw the other two but I doubt I will see anyone better than gestede for heading a ball. Absolute animal in the air

The only caveat I would have against Gestede, is the quality and tactics of the defenders he comes up against. Specialist center halves who want to win every ball by whatever means are rare these days.

Wouldn't disagree with Parson's observations.

Will never forget Fryatt's equalising goal against Joe Mercer's Man City in FA Cup at Ewood that night back in 1967 (think I've got the right year). About 44,000 on Ewood that night and the place really rocked like nothing I've experienced before when Big Jim rose to notch with his head at the BE.

Very difficult to pin down 'the worst player' because there has been some absolute dross including the likes of Martin Britt, John O'Mara and Sean Curry although I think I am right in thinking Curry did get 7 or 8 goals for us and big John chipped in with a dozen or so (world beaters compared to the infamous Brown !).

Sean Curry now there was a turkey from what i remember, used to detest that guy. I vaguely remember going away to Bradford and seeing him put in what was probably the worst laziest performance i'd ever seen from a Rovers player up to that point. Even his own players were having a go at him.

Brown went AWOL in front of goal everyweek and Curry went awol during the week lol If Curry had Browns effort and attitude back then he might have done ok though.
