My guess would have been Hoyte from Arsenal, due to the signing of Sagna and a probable recommendation from Bentley, and possibly Eddie N. However, Nicko's wording sounds like it could be a foreign player...but that could be just to throw people of the scent a little. :)

Hoyte would seem to fit nicely into what Hughes wants from his full-backs, and the fee would probably be low as well as Wenger tends to under value the young English players he lets go e.g. Bentley and Sidwell.

That's very disappointing, and bigger-fool-him really. Benni and Roque are better than Jason Roberts. That is a simple fact which no-one with even half a brain will deny. When it comes to our other strikers, I'd much rather see Derbyshire 3rd choice and Rigters (remember Rigters?) 4th.

I know some Roberts fans will say he's a "different type of player", and "another option", but I don't see why it's necessary to have an "option" who needs 25 chances before scoring, constantly gives away free kicks and isn't too clear on the offside rule.

My prediction: Roberts to Fulham in January, for significantly less than £4m.

:wstu:

Rigters isn't a proven premiership player, he's young and he will probably need time to settle in and become good enough to play for Rovers. Hughes bought him for the future. And how on earth can you be so dissapointed about Roberts staying? As I've written earlier in this thread, Hughes have 4 very good strikers available in every game. If the starting two doesn't play well, he'll just throw on one or both of the other two strikers and they will have a good chance of changing the game for us. Look at man utd when they won the treble, they had Cole and Yorke up front, with Sheringham and Solskjaer on the bench. Clubs that want to fight for europe needs a squad with a lot of option available! And if you look at the run in last season, you can't tell me that Roberts is a bad player? if so, I think you are a muppet! ;)

hoyte would fit in nicely, but nicko said he has been on trial, for some reason i cant see hoyte being on trial at blackburn..i think its a young player for the reserves...

It's going to be a foreigner, I assume, because he's on been allowed here on trial. Doesn't make much sense to me with all the players we have who can play right back, which includes Tony Kane who has reportedly been refused permission to return on loan to Cercle Brugge.

But then, if he's the new Cafu, I don't think I'll be complaining.

My stance isn't that Roberts is a bad player, just that he's nowhere near good enough for Rovers. In my opinion our strike force should be Benni, Roque, Derbyshire, Rigters, Gallagher and A.N.Other, hopefully someone from the Academy. Rigters hasn't been given a chance up front (or even on the bench for that matter), and I'm led to believe he's a strong player, only with much more guile (and hopefully some more semblance of the rules) than Roberts.

If these opinions make me a muppet I can live with that! I maintain that with a lack of football up to Christmas, Roberts will decide he wants to leave, and Fulham will pick him up for less money. Anyhoo, this is Nicko's thread - Don't want to hijack it....

Intrigued by the right-back.

The right back is on trial.

He is 19.

He is foreign.

So it would be filling the 'up and coming' target they have had in mind for some time.

The bottom line is will he be more ready for the team if called on than young Kane...

That's where the manager comes in.

It's a good name and a good story.

But I said 9pm - and I will stick to that.

Only name I can come up with is Arsene Menessou (Le Harve) French 19 year old right back

Has been on trial at Ipswich, Aston Villa & Cercle Brugge (affiliated to us)

I may be way off here, just having a guess. Anyway bored now of googling. I'll leave it for Nicko to reveal later.

Good shout, could make sense, but I don't think he's good enough. He's not even established in the Le Harve first team, so for him to be brought here as a more solid right back back-up would be a bit odd, but of course entirely possible. Did a little look on the Le Havre fans messageboard and they talked about his trial at Villa and were a bit surprised.

Le Harve have produced some very good players though and they even admitted themselves that they had let some very good players go very early in their careers. tI really wanted us to make a move for Digard this summer.

Re: 4 million for Roberts being a good price; this writer agrees. Hughes however has not as yet won anything as a manager (correct me if I'm wrong). This season sees us in with a fair prospect of winning a trophy on 3 fronts (Carling Cup; F.A. Cup & UEFA Cup) as well as a hectic timetable as usual in the Premier League. There is also the added incentive of the prospect of a Carling Cup final being played at the new Wembley. I'm sure MH has already taken these factors in to consideration, when considering off-loading any half-decent first teamers. On balance IMO therefore, better for Roberts to stay put .

To me, it does make sense to bring in a specialist right back; although Ooijer and Zurab can play there, they're clearly more at home in the center of defense, and if

Emerton were to be out injured for any length of time, I'd be more comfortable with a fullback who can get up the field to support Bentley (as Bentley seems to have played his best football with Emerton behind him).

That being said, I am a little surprised that Hughes would usurp Kane's spot in the pecking order, especially considering that nicko posted this less than two weeks ago:

It's not exactly major news, but young Tony Kane looks to be making an impression on the management.

The right back was wanted on loan by a couple of clubs last week but the word came back that he would be involved with the first team squad.

He may get a month out on loan later on, but at the moment he is seen as being first-team potential.

Looks the pick of the ressies any time I see him.

By the way, Kane turns 20 today, so he's not exactly getting up there in age either. While I suppose you can never have enough young talent coming through the club, it does seem a bit of an odd move to me -- unless, of course, this player really is the business, in which case rover6 and I will both shut up!

Doesn't sound like he could be good enough, surely Villa or even Ipswich would of signed him if so. This was purely a guess at who it could be though, there is nothing to suggest it is him.

Personally I would definately have him above Gallagher and Rigters in the pecking order. I have seen Rigters play on a few occasions and I certainly would not play him instead of Roberts. Who would you suggest that we could get who would be prepared to sit on the bench however you could depend on them if needed.

My info is that the boy who has flown in is Assimiou Toure, who played for Togo in the World Cup finals and is with Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.

Toure is 10 and said to be promising but wants to move to play more football.

He is also quite small for a right back at 5ft9in.

I guess the manager is having a good look at him - he has been there since Monday.

So we shall see soon. At least that is one positive about the transfer deadline.
