As I said above - for me although it would be the game of the season it wouldn't have the edge to it that it has now if it were to happen every season.

With all due respect to you Ben, I think you are quite mistaken in your view of the local derby match. I can assure you that when it did happen on a twice a year basis it most certainly never lost it's spice. Just the opposite in fact, because no matter what the result of the last meeting was it always resulted in either Rovers or Burnley holding the bragging rights until the next meeting, and both sets of fans could not wait until the next chance to either get revenge or to rub it in as the case may be. And the attendance at both Turf Moor and Ewood was always very good and the atmosphere was unbelievable. Those were the matches that stay in your memory for ever, and I thank my lucky stars to be able to look back on a whole series of fantastic clashes at different periods spread over the last 50 years or so.

Thanks for that.

'Been all over the dingle boards for a while, nowt special picking it out.' - USA Blue

All I did was thank Nicko for his 'scoop' yet you said it was hardly that because it had been all over the dingle boards.

You then went on to retract this later in the thread by admitting that Nicko was the first to reveal Coyle's name.

'If you can find it anywhere before last Thursday at 10.45 in the morning [message 5104] then I would love to know...' - nicko

'Seen reports on the Pie and whatever board as early as the 16th which is a day after Thursday so I give you that closet clarrot. heh heh' - USA Blue

Not wanting to be pedantic here but my point was that Nicko was the originator of Coyle's name, I didn't question that it was on the Burnley message board, only that it was on after Nicko's revelation and as such those who had profited from the info should be thankful. duh?

Well done putting that together, it's simple really, I screwed up did not realise Nicko had him as a shoe in as early as last Thursday. Just to clear up, the question you posed to me was if I was sure it was on the dingle boards for some time, course it bloody was. Now, stop being so sensitive. Even the great, World Famous, Internationally renowned USABlue drops a clanger form time to time.

So nicko, can you clear up the confusion? Coyles in, then the dingles have been refused permission to talk, what do the people in the know say?

I have already put my money where my mouth is and backed them to go up via the play-offs. At 20 to 1 I thought it was sheer value. I may lose, but I think the rest of the season may be fun for your country cousins.

Right that's it ban him now.

It's straightforward. Burnley want Owen Coyle to be their manager after a selection process - but St.Johnstone want compensation for him.

So, like anything else you want - most of the time - you have to pay for it.

It will get done.

Has he had an interview at burnley yet ?

Is it true that St Johnstone want £150,000 compensation and Burnley have offered £40,000?

Fairly close estimates - and fairly close to happening.

There will be a big development by lunchtime.

Burnley know they want him, St.Johnstone realise he wants to go. Common sense should prevail.

By the way, why would you NOT want two sell-out games? Probably both on Sky?

I have seen all four of the recent derbies and they were all crackers in their own way. I just don't get this idea that you want to hurl abuse and never actually go head to head.

Ours is a bitter rivalry. I remember being gutted when The Dingles survived the drop into the Conference. If they had gone Burnley would have died and I would have happily danced on their grave. Nicko, would Rangers fans love Celtic to be relegated from the SPL and never come back? Of course they would! In it's own small way the East Lancs rivalry can be almost as nasty as the Glasgow one without the Sectarianism.

On Owen Coyle I heard a podcast where he was being discussed by a number of Scottish Football luminaries. He is very highly rated and could be the next off the Caledonian conveyor belt of top coaches. I only hope that he turns The Clampetts down in favour of waiting for a bigger job.

sorry but i will take any chance we get to play the dingles.Sellout games against local rivals or uninspiring games against the likes of fulham, watford and charlton etc?

For me a no-brainer, bring them on!

An easy 6 points a season i think. :rover:

The last thing BRFC as a business needs is a 'powerful' close local rival..... and especially one with an annual income of £40m. Simple as that.

In some respects yes,but then you could argue that should the unthinkable happen and the dingles manage to reach the promised land,it might just stir the passions of Rovers fans and persuade the majority of our stayaway fans to return to Ewood on a more regular basis as season ticket holders. It would also give us an Ewood sellout that we wouldn`t otherwise have.

The dingledomes renovation will see them have LESS capacity than they do now,so they won`t be able to generate their own funds. To be honest, they would need to spend that £40m to be able to get a squad that can anywhere near compete with Rovers.

And to be honest nobody knows whether Coyle has the right credentials to succeed as a top boss, and also is dingle flood the real deal or yet another ten bob millionaire promising the earth and coming up with nothing?

I for one suspect the latter.

Rangers and Celtic are the perfect example of two clubs who need each other...it keeps the hatred and the interest going. I look at them and look at your rivalry and wish it was on a similar level footing.

Can you imagine Rangers NOT playing Celtic in the top flight for 41 years? Think of all the fun you would have missed out on.

Football is meant to be raw and ugly sometimes. If not, you could watch indoor bowls instead.

I think the interest it would create in the area would be magic. Look at how awful the gates are when you play Bolton. It would be similar if North End could make it, although I think that is less likely - despite the fact that Alan Irvine is a very decent coach they are probably at the rebuilding stage.

I also remember in the build-up to all of your derbies that there was big national interest. Now, I know that does not necessarily matter, but it can spin off - and you get live TV cash from it if you are lucky.

Too many games are bland these days, your derby is normally gripping, Even the 0-0 at Turf Moor in the Cup was great because of some of the off-the-field and on-the-field theatre.

Would you rather have that than a half-empty ground v Watford?

Freddy Shepard wants to take over at a northern club!

Who could it be nicko ;)

I think the fact he has gone public suggests he has not found a club to invest in or buy.

Leeds United would be favourite, but even Freddy would find it hard negotiating with Ken Bates.

NICKO, apologies if this has been mentioned before, but ive heard we are running the rule over athletico's nihat.

he was quality a few yrs ago, but is very injury prone nowadays.

I've not heard that one and would worry about his injury record and age...plus you have strikers who would keep him out of the side.

I think a right back and another midfielder are ahead of a striker in the priority list.

From what I hear there are plenty under review, but nothing that has caught the imagination yet.

It would not surprise me if there were a couple of trialists soon - no names yet - and that worked with Ryan Nelsen and Chris Samba, so it's a system you can't knock.

The big national interest came about simply because there had been no regular clashes. The passion and pride and aggro fueled in the 70's came from seperation and the dingles domination over us, they having the upper hand as we were a couple of divisions apart. Regular games would see that edge lost some. You see it in the gates from back then, the first games drew over 20K at each locale, as we met more and more the gates dwindled if I am not mistaken. Wasn't the last time we met before they started their slide watched by only 13K at Ewood. A mere 7 years on from 76

Any news on the Brum job? Black is hot favourite on the betting.

I would save my money on that market. Birmingham have been trying for other people, so Eric Black is not their favourite - and he has told Wigan he is coming.

Mind you, if his Birmingham team beats Portsmouth this weekend and Wigan take a pasting off Arsenal there might be second thoughts all round. Stranger things have happened.

Why pay more than you want? Save the cash for the loan players you want to bring in this week.

There is no set compo figure in his contract, so it's down to haggling...or walking.

Why not offer what he is worth to you, still I suppose it was a "feeling out" offer anyway, expect a compromise somewhere in between??
