What about the other 10 guys?

If we were talking about the other squad members then of course we would be bringing them up but the discussion is about Shearer.

Have you read his book? You'll find that his achievements at Blackburn are something he is very proud of and we will always be a part of him.

You can't fault anyone by being disappointed at not winning more trophies especially at the club he supported as a boy and he's probably disappointed he didn't win more at Blackburn because we had the squad to do so.

Without Shearer, we probably wouldn't have won anything.

Shearer is a Blackburn legend and will always be remembered for what he achieved with us.

Absolutely spot on - I remember my Dad telling me when he was playing for Rovers that we'd never see anything like him down at Ewood again...how true! I would have been about 10 or 11 at the time!

and I will copy your signature if i may :D

Here one for your Sunday column Nicko, see if the FA will wear Big Al, taking along his best mates as assistants, both have league experience.

Mike Newell? Interesting, but a boss rather than a coach.

Kevin Keegan? If you mean him that would cause a rumpus.

If there was a real coach out there to go with him that would be the dream ticket.

what kind of logic states that just because kilinsmann did well at the last world cup, we should appoint shearer??! firstly klinsmann might have had a good home world cup, but they had done pretty badly in the runup to the tournament and there was serious question marks raised about his reluctance to have much hands on contact with his players, effectively managing them from his house in california. who knows which way germany wouldve gone had he stayed but he still needs to prove his credentials more to be mentioned in the same breath as the best IMO.

but either way shearer and klinsmann are two completely different people. the success klinsmann had has absolutely no bearing on shearer, you throw most ex players into a high profile job with no management experience whatsoever, and they will do badly. shearer could potentially work, but what england need now is proven class. shearer is definitely not that. maybe in the future but definitely not now.

Please do.

Would Ince command the same respect as Shearer? Does a year at Macclesfield and MK Dons in the old Fourth Division qualify you for anything...apart from another season in the old Fourth Division?

Yet a fella who has only played a bit part in England and spent a couple of years at St Johnstone is the next Messiah? (ok ok I embellish a bit) Can you keep your arguments consitant please.

On the Sven thing, I never liked him, thought he was too passive but he did get us into the Tourney's and his results overall are good, I suggested at the time he was Boss that perhaps having McClaren as a sidekick was undermining him, it is quite possible it was.

Also nothing against Shearer after what he did FOR this club, I have all the respect in the World for him and his abilities, scored some of the finest goals I have seen when it comes to clinical finishing. I just don't think he is England manager material. Perhaps for the sake of "friendship" on here we should just agree to disagree, or is this the fun part?

It's not about 'form guides' - it's about people.

Shearer would win over a dressing room with his personality, Owen Coyle will win over a dressing room with his personality.

It's about respect among players, which these days - when they are mainly rich and can't be scared by bullies - is a very important factor.

You either know the game or you don't. Shearer does, Coyle does.

There are surrprising similarities.

By the way, Mark Hughes falls into a similar category too. Players listen to him because he can speak to them at their level.

And incidentally, check Owen Coyle's goal record. Was it 296 or 297 goals he scored?

Coaches cannot excite players alone these days. It's also about knowing the game. If you played it for a long time and picked up that kind of intelligence.

Searer has "personality"? I listened to the Coyle fella he does have personality, very upbeat sounding sort of fella. Shearer and personality the two words just don't seem to go together.

Shearer has personality. He is intelligent and articulate. He's got a wisdom about him although he is deadpan at times on the TV. Ask other players or people who know him and they speak volumes about the guy.

Again - Mark Hughes is one of those people who don't 'gibber' for the sake of it. He tells it straight and is worth listening to.

I've just looked at the betting and there is only Harry Redknapp at shorter odds than Shearer when it comes to English options...and dear old Harry's strengths are signing players rather than coaching. However he is a decent man manager.

What Redknapp said about foreign managers yesterday is right. They are often built up more than they should be.

Capello is a mighty impressive figure, but his sides can be a bit dull at times. Klinsmann? Why? O'Neill? No. Hiddink? Didn't he lose 3-0 to England a couple of months back. Mourinho? Good talker, but wants Real Madrid. Benitez? Have you seen Liverpool lately?

In the absence of an outstanding candidate, come up with a new idea...

I know he was very close to Razor Ruddock and that would be an interesting decision by the FA if he wanted to bring him with him considering his weight and personal issues he's had/have.

I don't think Flowers would be controversial as he seems to have a good reputation in the game as a coach, and he's got bottle!

Shearer comes across as a a mindless bore on TV but his behind the scenes clashes with the FA, Bellamy et al. whilst he was a player prove that away from the cameras he has more than bit of zest, assertiveness and fire. That was evident on the pitch and I think that he'd do a fair job as England boss. It'd be a risk but a sensible one, imo.

I think you are not thinking this through properly Alan. The skills of a national manager vary in emphasis from the skills of a club manager. Leadership is needed in both of course but imo motivational skills and tactical nous are the two biggest skills required by any national manager with man management and coaching being to the fore in club management. Rednapp may not be the ultimate choice but he appears stronger in the first three. Shearer on the other hand.....?

The Italian imo would be a disaster. He would want the players to play the Italian way and imo our lot don't have the right mind set for that. It was certainly obvious in the last match that they should be cultivating that ability but imo I think Capello's skills would be just too alien for English players, spectators and media.

Anyway what do I know? Barwicks the man of the moment.

Harry Redknapp is a cracking club manager, years of experience and a shrewd judge - in the main - of a player.

But I am not sure that transfers to the international scene.

Again I go back to the Mark Hughes comparison. His first job was the Wales job...why? Because he was good with the rest of the team and a leader.

That is the way the modern game is. It may not be your ideal or mine, but it's the reality. You need to cuddle and coax them in proper measure.

Anyway, Shearer may have something else coming up soon...but that will have to wait until the Sunday People tomorrow. ;)

Well using the same comparison it certainly transferred the other way. :rover:

Anyway wots Billy Money Bags up to? I know you wont tell us yet but assume that it must involve some position at either the Mags or some TV deal?

I don't know...I was thinking about that to myself yesterday actually. I was thinking that Harry's main attribute is his wheeler dealering, but he can't do that as international manager. However, it would be good in that he would be more likely to pick the BEST players as opposed to the supposedly 'top' players. That could be just what we need.

Well said Bazzanotsogreat, we had the best out of Shearer and he was one of the best players to ever play for the Rovers, Legend is an over used word sometimes, now Simon Garner was and is a legend.

:rover:

Ridiculous, of course Shearer is a legend.

Well Sam Allardyce could be out of a job soon, things don't seem too rosy up in the north-east!

If he gets it, I will stop watching England for the foreseeable future.

IMO, it has to be Hiddink. Nicko sorry but I don't care that his Russia lost 3-0 to us a couple of months back. They BEAT us more recently for starters, they qualified when we didn't, and United lost to Bolton today which proves you can't judge a team on one result. Hiddink has a record of taking poor international teams and accomplishing heights for them they've never reached. England are woeful at the moment and could clearly benefit from this kind of expertise. I wanted him last time, and I want him this time too. Shame he signed a lengthy contract with Russia if I recall rightly.

If the new boss must be English, Adrian Boothroyd for me, with Shearer his number two.

And each player must be told if they aren't playing regular competetive football, they can forget about another call up - that would solve some issues. Sick of players like Bridge, Bent and Defoe getting the nod ahead of other Englishmen who re playing more than them.
