Nicko, do you have any information on Juan Velasco (Espanyol right back) not sure if this is old news or not. Cheers.

We were linked with him, along with Fulham, around a month ago. Can't remember which paper it featured in but it was a small article saying we were battling it out with Fulham for him. I think he is on a free transfer.

Don't think there is anything in it but who knows....

Signing Beattie from Everton would strengthen Evertons hand greatly giving Moyes a terrific boost, whilst at the same time severely weakening Rovers hand on this all to skewed playing field of Englands premiership footballing division. This in no way is an option that Rovers can take in order to move forward.

Having Beattie on the other side when Rovers play... is a great boost for any Rovers team taking them on, not the other way round.

Whether they are universally popular or not Santa Cruz and Beattie seem to be the options and what the manager wants. So signing either would go down as a success. Signing neither might leave you a bit stretched.

In terms of numbers: surely only if McCarthy or Roberts Leave?

Imo the question is whether or not we can sustain or improve last season's finishing position with the back up we have for McCarthy. I think ideally we need two 15 - 20 goals a season men. (Might even be Derbyshire - a lot more likely than Beattie anyway) We already have the numbers but can we bring in the extra quality?

I'd like to see Smith. As Kayos said, he will provide the work and space that Benni needs (and will be less important for Benni to work his socks off like people want), plus he would provide DEPTH in CM, hopefully only playing there when injuries and rested players necessitate. I wouldn't mind RSC, either. He hasn't done much for Bayern, but has played well when it counts for Paraguay. Looked great when I saw him against T&T in WC2006. Is still young, and in the current market, the price bandied about isn't bad at all. Hopefully we keep Roberts, though, and aren't bringing him in as a replacement.

As for Beattie - please no!!

I've mentioned this on other topics but really think that Justin Hoyte (£2.5-3m), Kevin Nolan (£4.5m)& Leroy Lita (£??)or Bobby Zamora (£3m)would greatly improve our squad/team. Also, they are all English which gives us a chance to have another player in the national side & don't think they would cost that much. Would like to see Peter Crouch who I think would be fantastic getting onto the end of Pedersens crosses & set pieces, however, don't think he would leave Liverpool even though he has slipped behind Kuyt, Torres & Voronin in the order. Trouble is with a bid for him we would have to bid over £10m.

Any other serious ideas?? Don't think we have much chance of signing Kaka or Ronaldinho!!!

i really think that 6 million for smith is about twice as much as he is worth. he doesn't score many goals and has a short fuse.

beattie is a better option than many people realise. he would provide this seasons cover (a bit like nonda last season) and hopefully not hinder derbyshire's progress into the first team. we do need someone with a bit of power so he meets the criteria.

i really think that we are just holding on until january when we hopefully have new owners and more money. i doubt the trust will spend much on the eve of selling the club and savage, ooijer and reid will all add to last seasons squad.

in my opinion, signing beattie would be a bad move a would show a lack of ambition by the club.

No doubt he could maybe do a job for us but the club always say we only want players who can improve the starting 11.

did nelsen, samba, mccarthy, mgp, bentley, friedel, warnock... all show a lack of ambition?

i'd rather buy a squad player and let derbyshire play more.

About time some people had a reality check and shut up whining.

For a start, the squad is strong enough as it is - a few new players would not go amiss but Hughes knows what he is doing, if he does not see anyone who will strengthen the squad then he will not buy anyone - simple as really.

He has got it spot on every time with signing players, players who most of us have never heard of in the past, so let him get on with his job.

If its not 'how many season tickets we sold' its 'oh we signing no-one I feel like slitting my wrists'

Some people need to get a reality check.

I think he is correct though. Whats the point bringing in players that wont better what we have. Fulham are a classic case of this.

Exactly. A lot of teams are buying just for the sake of it. They have the new TV money burning a hole in their pocket and are desperate to bring anyone in. Can you really see 5 or 6 new players in a team gelling immeadiately? Especially the likes of Citeh with all the foreigners. Benni was praised last season for doing so well in his first season in the country as it is such an unusual occurence.

Hughes has proven time and time again that he knows what he is doing. Have faith. :)

Hughes expects Santa Cruz to sign today

looks like you were right Pleasure

Nice one ... I must admit I've not seen much of him but sparky must think he can get the best out of him. He appears to have been the number one target (after Bellamy) otherwise we'd be signing Beattie I'd have thought.

Big name, unknown entity as far as the premiership's concerned ... who knows?
