[Archived] Nicko's Thread

Recommended Posts

Dave, I don't think it's that he can't question someone about his own club, it is more the way it is done. Accusing someone, questioning their integrity, implying things etc etc. Fine, ask questions about the club being sold and question Nicko himself if you wish but what is the point in going over and over it? If Nicko says 'I am no ones PR guy'. It is pointless to say 'I think you are, your dodgy because of XYZ'. It's the horrible way it was done, and then the complete delight in 'hurting his feelings'.

Can anyone explain to me what use a person giving us transfer gossip would be in relation to sweetening us up for a potential takeover? because it makes no sense to me.

"oh rovers might be getting took over?"

"oh but Fulham bid for Roberts"

its not like i suddenly forget about the takeover and he hasnt cast Dan Williams in some Jesus-esq light

Can you not see that it's all about gaining trust and confidence? A few accurate transfer tips and some very astute comments and suddenly the majority of the board or certainly the ones born since comprehensive education was introduced take his every utterance as absolute gospel. He's like some modern day Pied Piper of Hamlin.

So what exactly does this all lead to? None of us own shares, so he doesn't really need to gain our trust in order to take over the club. I very much doubt that the trustees are keeping tabs on our opinions on this site to see whether or not the deal will go through.

You lot really are behaving like spoilt children and need to get a bloody grip on reallity. Get real .... and get a life all you spoilt little babyhouses.

What's that saying about pots and kettles. I have never understood your need to sling personal insults either.

pugg, I take your point, but I can't help but feel that some are being far too precious about theselves.

My feelings are, that journos have few feelings for those that they wish to get a story from (or about), so why the problems when the situation is reversed.

Yeah nicko gave this board titbits, but why do that when the person that pays you would like to give those bits to you via your hard earned? There's no sense in it?

As has been stated all the info about nicko was and is freely available so it's not as though its being revealed for the first time.

As someone said, he left of his own accord, he could have stayed and defended himself, but at the end of the day he left.

To me he's a football supporter, not a Rovers supporter, who posted on this site, gave a bit of info, and left. If he came to Sydney tomorrow and let me know, I'd arrange a meet and buy him a beer, but this site or any of the posters on here owe him nothing and those that did question him are fully within their rights to do so and to question his motive for being on here.

I don't always agree with them, but that's democracy, I suppose.

One thing I have learnt in the 10 years or so I've been on the net, is to be laid back. Think, before you post, and before you post, think again. Revidge will tell you of my "petulance". I banned myself for 6 months or so after letting my fingers hit the keyboard before thinking about what I was about to type.

I was responding to Damage saying 'Journo has feelings hurt'. That is why I used the little ' symbols :wstu:. That easier for you?

Next time you might find it useful to read before you post. Oh and for the record, I doubt you have feelings...you have to be human for that.

This thread and the Rovers Sold thread, as intresting as they are, are degenerating from sensible discussions into namecalling slanging matches. I'd like to remind everyone we have a policy of no personal insults but I have no intention of going back and retrospectively rapping knuckles, but from now on, stop this getting personal or we'll set the dogs on you.

I was being ironic.....

JOURNO HAS FEELING HURT!

It was meant to be a mock tabloid headline (perhaps not very clear!) with the irony that journolists hurt the feelings or hundreds every single day with not a single prick on their collective conscience. So for a representative of the profession to feel that his reputation was injured on a website viewed by a few hundred people (as opposed to the millions that view their newpapers) caused me a little chuckle of irony! Maybe a little natural justice for the little people!?

I know what you were doing, I just didn't think Nicko deserved it.

Do you really think somebody who wants to take over the club would plant a journo on a website with just over 5,000 members to convince the "masses" on how good a thing he is? (and in the short time i have been posting on this site i reckon there are probably nearer 100 regular posters tops?)

Personally i think anybody who wants to take over the club should be welcomed.Lets face it Dan Williams wouldn`t take over Rovers for the money would he? Look at the facts we aren`t exactly man ure pulling in gates of 76,000 per game are we?

What would anybody have to gain from taking over Rovers other than:

A:Making money out of the club (which it hasn`t done in the 30 years i have been watching them)

B:Doing a Jack Walker and buying the club of their dreams who they have supported since childhood etc

Some of the posters on here have been watching too many conspiracy movies and need to get out more.

To balance this out, would someone like to respond?

Damage makes some points that are relevent to recent events and should be worthy of a reply. This in particular: "BRFC has been a major part of my life for 3 decades and I will not meekly stand by when I fell it is under threat". Why should someone like "damage" not be able to question a non Rovers supporter about his own club?

At which point did anyone say it was wrong to criticise Nicko let alone even question him? Nicko himself said several times the flak didn't bother him and was expected. What certain posters did went beyoind criticism and IMO was out of order. Clearly Nicko thought the same.

MB, others have had hard question put about themselves form time to time, but they didn't cut and run.

Nicko wasn't shy about letting himself be known (which is good from my point of view, why hide behind a nom de plume?), but if you're in the public eye, then expect to get noticed and to be asked the serious questions.

OK, a couple of posters have said that they were surprised that the mods didn't stop the Nicko thread, before he walked away from this site. That's fair enough. So, this is the way I saw things.

I was around much, not all, of the time on Friday night when all this blew up. I don't think any of the other mods were online, but I'm not sure.

There were two things that upset Nicko. The first was the assertion from one or two posters that Nicko was a PR man, or a "plant" for the DW consortium. I personally don't think that was the case, but it was something that was IMO, a fair question. There is no way that a moderator would, or ever has stopped a poster from expressing their point of view, providing it was done in a decent manner. Without looking back through the thread, I don't think anything was "indecent", but if it was, then I missed it at the time. I know for sure this upset Nicko tremendously.

The second thing that upset him, was the quotation cut and pasted by Guided Missile, concerning a past legal case. Nicko said that he won a libel case in that particular instance. I deleted that on Saturday morning.

Let's remember that Nicko wasn't going to be around here for ever and also that if he comes onto a m/b, he can expect to be asked some questions that to him, might seem unreasonable.

I might have judged that wrongly, but that's how I saw it.

I was looking for the words to say the same thing, but you've perfectly described my feelings.

I disagree with the paranoia, I mean accusations, but for someone who has been a journo for so long, this is a bit thin-skinned.

Thats a fair summary from Den.

Just like to add that the button marked "report" can be used to send notification of any post that appears to be offensive or against site guidelines. This can help us get to something quickly before something degenerates into petty squabbles.

As far as I know, nobody has reported any posts on this topic, but 2 posts have been removed - 1 as it contained an article that had already seen a successful libel case, and another making personal attacks at seemingly random members.

Newcomer or not ; if someone has repeatedly denied being "linked" to DW then there comes a time when evidence has to be out forward to back up the claims . I rather suspect that the Maltese Mudslinger is still a peculiar shade of green due to the attention given to a journalist who's forgotten more inside information than he ever pretended to know......

To be fair to the man, being a freelance journalist seems a precarious way to make a living to me, and one that depends on his industry credibility. The digging up of a libel which undermines that I can well believe to be immensely upsetting. While it may have been in the public domain, its repetition in a public forum is another matter entirely.

And I expect his orders to cease and desist more likely came from Mrs Nixon worrying about the housekeeping rather than his mythical paymaster worrying about the crumbling of the cunning plan to take over Rovers by influencing the opinions of a handful of internet saddos, me included.

And that should be the last post on this subject.

i suspect that it may be very close to the truth.
