  1. 1. Should Steve Kean be sacked

Recommended Posts

Agree with most of that, apart from the premier league experienced manager being a step in right direction. I firmly believe, managed by the likes of Smith etc (people who we are likely to target should Kean go) we will go down for sure.

Fair play mate, appreciate your replies. Like I said I am not having a go, healthy debate is good and we all have our opinions. I respect your reasons, they are based on your own personal views.

I too think the likes of smith and o'leary would be a bad move. Imho we will struggle to replace kean with a quality manager due to all the off field goings on. Either way sacking him or continuing with him is a big risk. We keep him and recent history suggests we will continue not winning games in the main - whether we play well or not. Sack him and his replacement has to be of sufficient quality to drag us out of the mire.

For me the sack option is a no brainer, the writing was on the wall last season and they were far too hasty in giving him a longer contract.

David O'Leary may not be the best, but he has years of Premier League experience under his belt and took Leeds to a Champions League semi-final. Walter Smith, likewise, has lots of Premier League experience and worked wonders at Rangers.

Steve Kean has a fair amount of experience at losing in the Premier League, but not much else. He isn't a manager and that's what we need.

I used to hold a similiar opinion to you, BDB - why sack Kean unless we can get a good replacement. However, I honestly feel we're at the point that almost anybody would be a better option.

But tactically he is still making the same mistakes over and over again, regardless of how the performances have improved. His tactical naivety is costing us. In the lsat game (I'm not sure about all the recent performances) we passed the ball better, but we're still terrible up front. And our midfield still leaves the defense terribly exposed, over and over again. On Sunday it was just a matter of time before Tottenham made the most of it.

I disagree because I think we have improved tactically, but we're still making mistakes and not keeping our shape properly. The main problem has remained the lack of cover for the full backs. I think for the first goal where Kyle Walker darted down the line, either Olsson or Hoilett should have been marking him, instead Givet was trying to track back, but obviously failing to keep up with Walker's blistering pace.

I don't think we were anywhere near as exposed defensively as previous games. In fact, other than a couple of occasions, the team defended solidly and both Olsson and Lowe kept the Spurs wingers very quiet.

If anything our team shape didn't keep Van der Vaart under control enough and that was our weak point, which was exploited by Spurs. I'm not sure if anyone was actually tracking him, which was a massive mistake, not only because I rate him highly (he's one of my favourite players) but because he has been absolutely immense for Spurs during his time there.

The problem is that even with improved tactics, Kean still isn't getting results and that's not good enough.

The majority of the senior players are not behind him.

And I just don't buy this attitude of 'let's keep Kean because we couldn't get anyone better'.

If we offered the right terms to most unemployed managers (certainly your Hughes/Curbishleys/Svens), they would be here in a flash.

Keeping Kean in charge is a huge mistake when his blatent incompetence at the job is quite clear and apparent.

5 points from 9 games = 21 points in a season. It'd be interesting to know which clubs have got equal or worse than that since the league began. The managers of those 2/3 (at a guess) clubs are the only ones who could be considered worse than Kean in the last 20 years of football. Everyone else is better, including Smith, O'Leary, probably even Brian Laws.

If I hear one more time that the players are behind him……..or in fact the owners support him.

Imagine if the players were not behind him, not sure our results could be any worse.

To be honest, I pay absolutely no attention to what the players say. Nelsen backed Ince until the grim end... the players probably do it partially out of loyalty and partially because they don't really know what's best management wise. If the players had that kind of sense a manager wouldn't be required at all.

Obviously, a player revolt would push Kean further towards the exit door... but I don't think we can rely on them to be smart enough or to care enough to do that. After all, as far as most of them are concerned, they'll just move elsewhere if we're relegated for cut-price deals with a nice little signing on fee.

Sorry if this has been discussed, at work so can't check the last few pages. TalkSport said this morning there were rumours flying around that Kean is in line for a contract extension to "quell the unhappy supporters"

If true, well, that'd be it for me.

People aren't terrified, but I doubt that those who are willing to give Kean more time (which doesn't include myself) really want to express an opinion when they're only going to get slated for it.

There is no room for balanced debate - Kean can only do wrong and that is the end of it.

Maybe if he had done some "right" there'd be potential for a balanced debate. As it is, he hasn't, hence the poll results.

Just 3 people so far who think he should get more time.....

waggy , Russ , bringdunnback

Four now.

Seem to be people who believe that we should give him more time because his successor will be worse.

I don't think they quite understand that Steve Kean is the worst manager we've had in almost twenty years.

I love how the media and fellow professionals seem to be backing him up, yet opposition fans are now saying how he's the worst manager ever to grace the league.
