Yesterday was a good point earned against a very good Arsenal team. We were bossed for the first half and changed to a back four in the second half and matched them up in midfield. We were much better because of this and enjoyed more possession and attacking play although we didn't create too much. Gilsenan came on and had, up to then three of our best chances, one of which hit the post. Our perseverance paid off with a scrambled goal in stoppage time. Out of the first team squad I thought Edun looked the best starting at wing back and moving in to midfield in the second half. Mola, Wharton, Dolan and Brittain looked a long way off Championship football on this showing. Tomasson was in attendance and would, I think be happy with the result after the change of shape but disappointed with some individual performances.

I know highlight clips are not reliable guides but Brittain looked alarmingly below the level he can and should be at.

Gilsenan unfortunate not to score on several occasions.

Spoke to a Barnsley fan the other day who said  ‘ah you’ve got last seasons Brittain, rather than the play-off season man’. He very much seems a form player; needs to stay fit and sharpen up. Shadow of the player we saw earlier in the season.

He's also been my man of the match in a good few games this season. At times he has looked like he needs 5 minutes to get up to speed when coming off the bench but at the same time he was a big part in us getting back into the game and nearly snatching a point off Stoke.

I don't take much notice of a under 21 game in which senior players will be using it just to tick over, but I don't think he has been anything special this season and he is only a squad player at the moment with Rankin Costello and Pickering ahead of him. "One of the best full backs in the league" has been said about him before by our fans, not for me as things stand.

I think the attendance of JDT at the games is a way to try to stop that attitude. Being played in the U21s can be a sign that something is wrong with your game, and gives the player the opportunity to show a correct attitude to regain their first team position.

Especially in an international break, its just to get minutes in their legs im sure. Wharton has just come back from injury so especially for him. No idea why they bother with Mola mind you, a player so clearly out of his depth.

I am probably the only person on this board who thinks this. But I think Mola will make a good, maybe even a championship level, left sided central mid-fielder. I am making this assumption on the basis of what I have seen of him playing for the U21s. He may not be ready for our first team yet.

Seeing him at close quarters yesterday I hadn't realised how one footed Brittain is. The jury is certainly still out for me.

JDT has said playing for the under 21 is about keeping you match fitness up but performing well there will see you in the first team picture like Szmodics. Playing for the under 21;s isn't a punishment either

Brittain needs to get back playing regular problem is the form of Rankin Costello and Pickering which means he can't get that match sharpness he needs

That is what JDT has said playing for the under 21's. Look at my post properly where I said JDT has said  playing for the under 21 is about keeping you match fitness up but performing well there will see you in the first team picture like Szmodics. Playing for the under 21;s isn't a punishment either

But sometimes playing for the U21's is a punishment for poor performance. It used to be called, being dropped.

It will be quoted as not being a punishment but wheb senior players have played for the under 21s, it is usually either after an injury, poor form (Travis, Buckley etc) or for fringe players who could do with minutes. So whilst it is not strictly a punishment, the most important players we have who play most weeks at any time wont be asked to do so unless they are recovering or if their form nosedives to the point that they get dropped.

Maybe in the past but JDT wants his players to match fit and sharpness and is the reasons why so many first team players have played for the under 21's this season

Chaddy, it doesn't mean that JDT will punish poor performances by putting them in the under 21s though does it.

Not really an Academy player but a young player nonetheless. According to my football app Dilian Markanday has only made 1 sub appearance for Aberdeen since his Janurary loan. Not sure if he's injured but not what you'd expect if he had any decent prospect for us
