Leonard starts for U21s.

Based on that lineup, assuming Tyjon playing as a 10 (not for the first time this season) behind Leonard, which makes me wonder if this is just a case of fitting players into an 11, or if this is where they (at least initially) see Tyjon as breaking into the first team?  He seems to have very good movement, and playing off a 9 would be less physically demanding on a younger player

U21s lost 2-1

Tyjon scored just before the break

U18s 2-0 down at half time

Edit - U18s lost 6-0 at home to Derby

Why are the club so bloody awful at updating us on the U21 games these days? Even at this point no match report or anything on the website.

Both ages are gonna suffer a bit this season

key undrr 21s moving up to first team or loaned out meaning under 18s stepping up to fill the void will play a part, also meaning those who would be key in the 18s are with the 21s making the 18s raw to that age group

nature if academy football you can be shit hot one year the next poor cause of the quick turnover in players, although it’s common under Sheron for slow starts then improve rapidly it seems, probes plays a part in why the 21s are in 5/6 competitions to get the minutes out and the younger ones some experience at the higher level to settle them quicker.

obviously these levels are about development but some silver would have been nice by now to show for it, over last decade or so both age groups have reached finals and high league positions. At acct other week against Lyon the 21s despite losing 2-0 were worthy of the win

On the bright side, they at least now have the U21 and U18 squad pictures on the website, only taken them 3-4 months, lol

A youth football nugget I came across, Lewis Baker was in the Chelsea U18s side that beat Rovers U18s 4-1 over two legs in the FA Youth Cup Final in 2012. That match, 12 years ago, was, I think, the last time Rovers reached the finals. Rovers have reached the semis twice in the past decade, as far as I can tell.

The 2012 Rovers finalists side included: Urwin, Wylie, Edwards (c), O'Connell, Beesley, Hands, O'Sullivan, Fernandez, Curtis Hanley, Osawe and Haley. Subs: Dilo, Lenihan, Cotton, Payne, Daly, managed by Terry McPhillips. Victorious Chelsea had the likes of Nathan Ake, Todd Kane, Nathan Chalobah, John Swift, Piazon as well as Baker.

The last time Rovers reached the semis was, I think, 2020, under Mike Sheron, with this side losing 4-0 to Man City:

Eastham, Cirino, Saadi, Garrett, Pike, Brennan, Whitehall, Harlock, Durrant, Burns, Lonsdale
Subs: Callaghan, Wyatt, Connolly, Pleavin, Weston, Alex Baker, Harrison Wood

City were some side that year with a forward line of Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, Liam Delap, James McAtee, with Oscar Bobb coming off the bench. Harwood-Bellis in defence and James Trafford in goal.

Going back, the 2015/16 Rovers FA Cup Youth team might've been one of the more talented, led by Billy Barr, but they fell at the semis- against Chelsea with Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Tomori:

Andrew Fisher, Lewis Travis, Josh Askew, Lewis Hardcastle, Matthew Platt, Scott Wharton (captain), Tre Pemberton, Joe Rankin-Costello, Lewis Mansell, Ramirez Howarth, Willem Tomlinson. Subs: Steer, Magloire, Fawns, Ascroft, Grayson

Rovers 21s travel to Carlisle today fir Central league cup and you wouldn’t even know about it if you didn’t happen to check the site for fixtures….. poor poor advertising and not keeping fans in the loop, rovers have an academy page on Twitter so why isn’t that more active ?

Recall all our fa youth cup runs, 2020 was brilliant with the performances, the 4-2 against knobbers was a standout a certain Ty Dolan was there captain and scored the opener celebrated with a back flip, shame some of the good talent from that group won’t or haven’t made it.

you also forgot 2010, grant Hanley and Phil jones being our CB partnership, we beat Blackpool, man united, Everton and someone else I think ( not in order) to meet Chelsea in semis where we lost over two legs, remember me and my grandmother watching the home one and saying nothing is getting past that monster keeper they had who I think is Sam Walker last time I checked knew was at Colchester

Strong team for todays game with Toth, Duru, Mcfadzean, JRC, Buckley, Cozier-Duberry and Cantwell all starting.

Despite all that experience in the team Matty Litherland is captain. He is one for the future.

Cantwell looking a class above which is good to see.

Duru will definitely be first team next season, looking very good.

Dubbery looks sharp and is definitly quick off the mark, seems abit predictable by cutting in all the time...Hopefully he can change it up a little.

Powell looking sharp also on the left.also.
