It’s not really realistic to compare recent(ish) European and World Cup winners Spain with Croatia tbf.

Croatia have been excellent this tournament and fully deserving of their plaudits IMO.

On the other hand the ref blew for a foul towards the end of normal time with a Russian player clean through on goal after a Spanish defender fell over his own feet.

Unfortunately that's something VAR can't do anything about.

It would have been very brave of the var team , to give Spain a penalty ! 

The thing that bothers me more , did Spain really want to win !

Russia v Spain game of the tournament so far.

The draw is now basically split into two halves - The Dislikaebles (Brazil, Uruguay, France, Belgium etc.) and the Likeables (England, England, England, Russia).

If it's not England then hopefully another team from the likeable half can win it.

It makes one wonder if the Croat should have taken a shot as soon as he could, he was going to almost walk it up to the net....this is sure some sort of deja vu with Croatia it seems to me. They might be a bit unnerved in a shootout.

The rule is just plain wrong, he’s put the keeper on his ass and then is about to tap into an empty net and is taken out.

How can it be anything but a red card?

It’s not double jeapordy it’s not even single jeapordy as a shot against a keeper from 12 yards is a lot harder than an empty net from 10 yards!

I think it is still a red if there is intention, but I might be wrong. 

Obviously if that is the case, the ref thinks Zanka made an attempt for the ball.

The law changed recently and now if the referee deems the challenge to be genuinely for the ball it is a yellow card. A cynical challenge would be red.

Once in the African Cup of Nations, two of those teams really hit up near 20 penalty kicks, Ivory Coast and maybe it was Cameroon.

Danes gave a good game.....

A collection of some of the worst penalty takers in recent memory. Jeez... half of them looked like they'd never kicked a ball before. Modric very lucky that his penalty went through, could easily have missed two out of two.

No reason to fear Croatia based on tonight.
