Now there's a player who threw his career away.

Truth be told the only time he really had a period of sustained form was his first spell with us. Before that he already had gambling problems and injury issues. He didn't make many appearances for Arsenal before coming to Rovers. Obviously goes without saying he was brilliant for us for a couple of years, then it all went downhill again when he moved back down south with Spurs and never recovered. As we saw when he briefly came back here a few years ago he had become a shell of the player he was.

Long term I don't think his mentality would ever have let him get far in football. We were lucky to catch him during a very brief two year period when his head was right, but inevitably it got turned again before too long.

I think the key to his upturn in form was getting away from the bright lights of London. He had a close relative (aunt perhaps) who lived in Bury and the story is she kept him on the straight and narrow and out of the bookies and casinos. I also recall something that she was a nurse and Bentley organised for lots of footballers to voluntarily donate a days wages to the nurses. I was told by somebody I trust that as soon as he got back to London and the 'in crowd' again he was once again gambling and wasting fortunes.

Such a waste for a player of undoubted ability.

He was on BT Sport couple of years back, said as soon as he left Rovers he started to hate football. Said all he could think of was how he wanted to go back to Blackburn as he loved the club etc. Said the manager and the dressing room as a whole was brilliant with characters like Sav. Said he could have carried on as he had offers and could have earnt millions, but why be greedy, why do something he just didn't enjoy. Came back to Rovers when we were in the championship as thouught it might reignite his career, but said the club wasn't the same family club anymore and didn't enjoy it. Now owns a chain of properties and restaurants.

A shame he didn't have that attitude in 2008, probably would have gotten at least a few more decent years out of his career at Rovers before Venky's came in and bulldozed everything.

I met him during his first spell with Rovers and had a good chat with him and a few other players. I got a very  fortunate invite to a fund raising night, in Manchester in aid of the Jasón Roberts foundation. I was very close to a table full of Rovers players, Bentley being one of them.

i made it known I was a big fan and literally sat amongst the players for about half an hour. Bentley did say at that point how much he was loving his time at Ewood and felt very settled. I know he was hardly likely to say anything else to a fan, who he didn’t know, but he came across as actually loving his time there. I didn’t know he had gambling problems and it is a pity that after his period at Ewood, he fell away so badly. The highlight for me, was his hat trick against Man U in the day I think he signed permanently. A great night as we ran out 4-3 winners, after leading 4-1 at one point

They both seem a bit bonkers and therefore suited. ? Just needs to cut out silly things like assaulting police officers. ?

""Blackburn Rovers player Bradley looked sharp in a blue top –  which by the end of the night had a spillage on the shoulder.""

Hope it wasn't the team mate in the corner of the room thing again :)

Dack was back at Brockhall today pushing himself as he recovers from his hamstring strain. Hopefully he hits the ground running for us as he faces up to the challenge of the Championship where he has never played before and in many respects has to prove himself.

I remember Mowbray saying at the end of last season he was almost a little happy Dack picked up an injury towards the end of last season so they could keep an eye on him over summer.

I do think he very much has the ability to be a good championship player he just needs to keep his mind on the game, he reminds me a lot of Dunny with the ball at feet and finishing ability but like Dunny seems to be a man who likes a beer, women and hasn’t been blessed with a natural athletic physique.

It's a strange phenomenon with talented, enigmatic players who quite often fly by the seat of their pants. Even going back to the likes of Stan Bowles who was terrifically talented but lacked the real dedication to put him into the 50 - 75 England Cap bracket. There are lots of examples similar to Bowles. Dack certainly has ability and if he can improve his fitness by 10% through working hard and living correctly I think he will be comfortable in the Championship. If he could get 15 goals next season I'm sure the upper PL sides would come knocking.

Hasn't Dack got 3 years left on his contract? Can't see why on earth we should let him go whatever the offer.

He can stay with us and increase his value----win/win. Either grasp the new enhanced contract or stay on the old one. With 3 years left the club holds all the aces.

If, by some miracle we were to be promoted in a couple of seasons, he wouldn't need to leave at all.

I might be talking rubbish but don’t most contracts have a release amount? I can see the desire to reward his performances but I can see a higher stress on raising a release fee.

Stan Bowles, Tony Currie, Rodney Marsh, Frank Worthington, Charlie George, Alan Hudson to name just a few. The list is a long one.

The first time I saw Dack play for us I thought we've got a poor man's Rodney Marsh here.

I honestly think that if Dack stays injury free, he will be a revelation in the championship. He done the business last season, in the games when it mattered time and time again. He did it while being the most marked man in the division. He will be up against better players next season, but he will have a little more freedom I think, at the start anyway.

Needs to keep out of the boozers though first and foremost. He has another scandal in him I reckon. Mowbray is a good manager to have in that respect. Imagine having to go into his office after letting him and the club down... That would not be a nice experience

He's got the chance to make a name for himself at a serious level this season. If he gets his head down and concentrates on his football he could go a long way. Guys who can run with the ball and make things happen in the last third are priceless at any level of football.

Ya, thats it. Watching some of the stuff he did last season, I would just think "you can't teach that" How he dribbled, finished and found pockets of space to get assists was a joy to behold. If a team gets him on the ball, he will eventually hurt the opposition.

What does Dack want from his career ? If he buckles down and plays well again next season Premier League clubs will be knocking on our door. If he messes around off the field and doesn't look after his body in a professional manner he won't get anywhere. It's all down to him. Don Revie at Leeds insisted his great young players when they were coming through such Bremner, Hunter etc married early. Not sure if he'd get away with that these days but he knew the value of stability in players' lives.

Very true. I saw a picture today that Adam Armstrong put up on Instagram, it was him and his wife with a comment along the lines of "6 years married to the love of my life" After I finished crying, I thought that's a really, really good idea for young footballers careers. Rarely see it these days. I can understand why as well though to a point...

I don't know if getting married at 15 is a particularly good idea but good luck to them.

Imagine if Dack was CR7 fit - he'd be on the plane.

I've mentioned it before but I used to know a guy who played as a striker in the old First Division. He wasn't the most skilful player you ever saw by a long chalk but he really took care of his body. Real dedication. No fags or alcohol, late nights etc, he trained like his life depended on it and always gave 110%. Just a down to earth attitude that enabled him to have a good career at the top.
