Rowett is very defensive manager.

Also I wouldnt say Allen is a defensive midfielder at all. Box to box midfielder/playmaker for me

20 goals in nearly 300 appearances does not scream playmaker. I meant more that hes too conservative to be the most attacking in a 3, he is tidy in possession but theres no need for him, Etebo and Ndiaye, theres very little attacking threat there, and you can sacrifice one of them in favour of someone like Bojan.

As you say though, Rowett is very defensive.

Tugay only got 13 goals for us in 270 appearances but I'd call him a playmaker. Allen's a class act at this level.

No I agree, but you'd never play Tugay as the most attacking of a midfield 3.

Allen is obviously their best midfielder, but my point was you dont need Etebo and Ndiaye alongside him, its too defensive.

My point was more in regards to playing Ndiaye AND Etebo.

Tugay in his younger days use to be attacking midfielder and scored some great goals.

I agree Allen is a class act

It's a bit of a pointless discussion because we won't be signing Allen any time soon. Having said that he'd be perfect to replace either of Smallwood or Evans. We don't want him playing too far forward, we want him getting the ball forward from the back third of the pitch to the front third. Feeding Dack and Graham. What those two ( Smallwood and Evans ) rarely do.

Exactly.

Smallwood and Evans are too similar, one in the team is okay but we need someone in there that can play a bit. McGin sounds like that kind of player but whether we really have the dosh for him alongside everything else we need is another matter. Perhaps Davenport can be an answer.

For me, the Davenport signing is looking a little longer term.

Him and Travis on paper should be a great partnership for years to come but I think Travis perhaps needs a loan at least until January to get used to starting men’s football regularly.

It’s been overlooked by many, but we need an upgrade in CM right now. Davenport will probably be playing sooner rather than later but we can be doing better than Evans and Richie in this department. At least a bit more experienced, specialist competition.

Evans and Smallwood really getting it. Don't you think you are being harsh? We were AWAY to Ipswich. It is normal for the home team to dominate possession in midfield.

Perhaps.

I love what Richie can bring to us but he needs someone next to him either very similar in tenacity and bite (as we saw with Bennett at some points) to turn the midfield two into a really destroying system, or with someone who can control the play and create, as well as get stuck in.

I’ve honestly never REALLY rated Evans on any of these fronts and it will make Smallwood weaker in his role of Savage-lite if we can’t get someone next to him who is either good on the ball, or when the game dictates it, can get stuck in and about players as well as him.

I’m as sentimental and positive about our team as any poster, but ready made, experienced, effective and quality competition just isn’t there in the squad to the ideal Championship standard.

My two cents is all and I’ve derailed the thread.

I think Evans is a bit shite is the crux, and I always have ?

Yeah usually that is the case, however I bet that we won't dominate the possession in midfield next week against Millwall.

Smallwood runs around a lot and puts pressure on opposition, but isn't great with the ball.

This is Corry Evans 6th season with us and I still don't know what the hell he does in there, not a lot for me.

Someone like that Hibs lad would be ideal to compliment a Smallwood/Bennett in there but I don't think we'll sign someone in that role because we are well stocked there.

I think at this level you need a bit more creativity if you're hoping to do well. I don't think you can afford two water carriers when we still consistently concede goals. If we were keeping clean sheets regularly I could see the rationale of two defensive midfield  players, but we aren't.

Can anyone tell me why there are two midweek games this week in the Championship? Forest v WBA and Middlesbrough v Sheff Utd are both tomorrow with Forest on TV, yet nobody else is playing.

Hull v Villa tonight on TV.

Can't wait for Saturday's live game between Derby and Leeds, Sky Sports will be in overdrive with the Lampard & Leeds love-in.

Forest/WBA got moved to Tuesday because it clashed with the Cricket at Trent Bridge on the same night.

Middlesbrough/Sheff Utd got moved because Middlesbrough/WBA got moved to the Friday night for Sky on 24th August. (from the 25th August).

Both games were originally scheduled for Wednesday 22nd August. (Same night we play Reading at Ewood).

I thought the format of the show itself was fine. Bare bones but all I want is highlights of the goals, a few manager interviews and a little analysis if anything interesting happens. In that sense it was pretty much spot on. Shame about the picture quality but maybe next time I'll watch it on my old CRT and it'll look better.

Interesting tweet about Derby and players they didn't have in their squad at Reading on Friday. Marriott and Evans not in as they aren't up to speed yet.

Also missing altogether were Tom Huddlestone, Cameron Jerome, Craig Forsyth, Jacob Butterfield, Matej Vydra, Chris Martin, Ikechi Anya, Nick Blackman, George Thorne, Jamie Hanson and Marcus Olsson.

How on earth they're paying £5 million for Martin Waghorn when they've that lot sat around not even getting in the matchday squad is unbelievable on several counts. Must be £200k a week there.

I watch the majority of televised Championship games and I think the quality of it is overestimated.

Entertaining? Yes. Competitive? Yes. Wide open? Yes. Nothing much to fear though.

Just watching Hull Villa and Todd Kane is on the wing, hes been ok to be fair but its quite incredible.

That Hull starting line up is as poor as any in this league. Fancy us to go there and do them in two weeks. Desperate times when they are getting David Batty out of retirement, we should have considered something similar. He'd do more than Evans does. ;)

That's a lot of championship talent missing out Jesus!! I'd much rather us go for Martin or Jerome on loan than bring Gallagher back. If we are persistent in trying for McGinn and it proves futile, George Thorne or Jacob Butterfield would be an upgrade on Evans/Smallwood. If we let Tomlinson out on loan and somehow get rid of Evans and Whittingham, bringing one of McGinn/Thorne/Butterfield in would be unreal... Just looked and Huddlestone is only 31! Thought he was older than that, think he'll be playing for them this season though where as I don't think Butterfield and Thorne will be as much as they'd like. Interesting..

Ya Hull look poor, hopefully we can do a job on them. All about getting as many points on the board as quickly as possible.
