Where would you have Rothwell then? Not really anywhere for him other than the wing.

I see dack and rothwell in the same role so one or the other in the hole behind the one up front mowbray likes to play, my above post was for plan b which we didn’t have last season. Gives us options

I think we all see that with Rothwell. But we all know Dack will be in favour over him no matter how poorly he plays. Rothwell is an absolute must even on the wing. He's too good not to start.

Worst defence in the league weaker through the loss of Downing and Rodwell and still being coached by the same staff.

If Mowbray doesn't address that soon he needs help.

Darlow would be an excellent addition in my opinion but without structural changes to the defence it may well be pointless.

Funny how Downing was bang average when we signed him, but when we got rid he was decent, Rodwell hasn’t gone yet, but if he does pretty certain we’ll bring in a decent C/B, IMO we will be stronger when August comes.

I may be in the minority but I’d be happy with Gallagher, unfairly judged on a horrendous season with us when he was playing with poor players for a poor manager. Still scored some good goals that year.

In fairness I don't think it's that season  people are worried about, just the rest of his career so far. If it is a £5m fee then I'd hope it's at most £2m up front with everything else in instalments based on targets to be hit.

I don’t necessarily agree with that, yes play the players that are in form and dack could do with being dropped when his head goes down but some people rave too much about rothwell , he was playing in dead rubbers at the tail end last season, he still needs to be more consistent and not try Hollywood stuff all the time. Sure more game time but not in a shoehorned position, I like wingers playing on the wing

I don't think Gallagher has really achieved more than Adam Armstrong did before joining us, and we got him for something like £2m potentially rising to £3m. I'd say that is about right, maybe slightly more for Gallagher but not much more. I'd be disappointed if we signed him for £5m up front as I think that's too much - if our budget is the same as last year then that would be essentially half of our entire budget on Gallagher, which seems unnecessary.

Rodwell has gone as his contract expired in June and he hasn't signed a new one yet. I don't think he's been involved in pre season.

Whether you think Rodwell and Downing were good or useless or somewhere in between the reality is they were both called upon last season, albeit to a limited degree, and now they have gone and so far havent been replaced.

That means we are weaker. Two less CB options to what was already a weak defence. An urgent need to add a couple of defenders.

Sadly in today’s market that is peanuts , not going to get much prem lg strikers go for less than that, armstrong was really low and not the norm

Wow. Have we gone back in time to the middle of last season? Baffling comments towards a player who only played 35% of the season. Each to there own though. Hopefully he plays more this season to prove the minority who arn't as keen.

2 goals, 2 assists in 33 matches , I know most of them were sub appearances, but that’s nothing to get hyper about. I can remember many a time he was in a good position, played the wrong ball or ballooned it over the bar, still work to be done there imo

Sorry if already posted but this article suggests we'd be paying £4 million for Darlow.

https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/newcastle-united-transfer-and-takeover-news-live-karl-darlow-nears-ps4m-exit-417960

That seems an awful lot for a goalie who played once last season (in the cup) and 11 times the season before. I don't know the lad, can't think whether I've seen him play or not, so I'll have to bow to the judgement of others who seem excited, but based on those stats they're excited about a player from a couple of seasons ago? It just seems steep with that in mind. I'd feel more comfortable with a John Ruddy type (probably cheaper fee but bigger wages). He only played a few times last season too, but at least he had a full season the year before.

We'll see what happens of course, and how they turn out. Hopefully we make the right move, as this could be the most important bit of business of the window.

If Raya is going for 3 million then Darlow at 4 million is a good deal.

Isn't Gallagher like Brereton,  big and useless?

There are similarities, but Gallagher's tally from his one season with us exceeds Brereton's entire career total to date (Brereton has 10 in 83 appearances, so sayeth the mighty Wiki). So he's likely a lot more ready-made. I certainly don't want to pay any more than 3 million for him though.

If it turns out to be Darlow in for Raya, which looks like it may well be, then that is very good business. I'd expect Gallagher to come in next week too. We're certainly adding championship experience to our ranks.

OK my point was it doesn't sound like it though. Based on his barely having played for two seasons. Can you tell me something that might dissuade me from that opinion? Was he really so good over 2 years ago that you're certain he is still worth more than Raya? Players can stagnate incredibly when they barely play, and goalkeepers need confidence (such as being wanted enough to play week in week out). I'm not saying you're wrong, it's just he'd have to be really top notch to feel confident in what you're saying. Was he? Two years ago?

Neither are useless or they wouldnt be earning tens of thousands at what they do.

I like Gallcher actually and I think that he has never really been given a shot in his position - a striker. Even here not so much but still got a decent haul. he is a decent age and still has the potential to make us a few bob if he does get firing.

£4m seems stiff for a 28-year-old with only 180 first team appearances and who has been a reserve at Newcastle for the best part of 4 years.

28 quite young for a keeper ..and if you say an average of 30 games a season?  that equates to say six seasons ..not many Gks playing first team at 22..plus a specialised position  as such..4m not really  pushing it ?

You're looking at 2 years in the PL. In the Championship for Newcastle he played 30-odd games (promotion form, no less), previous to that at Forest he was their starting keeper for 3 years, and a very solid one too.

His lowest rate of clean sheets in the Championship is 25% in his first half-season as a mainstay for Forest in 12/13, followed by 28% in 13/14, and 29% in 14/15.

Then for Newcastle in the Championship in 16/17 it was 38%.

If he can help us keep an average of 1 clean sheet every 3 games, I'm happy.

Raya only played 53 games outside of league one pal. Darlow played 167 games above league one level, so what's that 114 more over maybe 4 more seasons than what Rayas had? Won't be a massive diffence in Rayas stats when he's at 28 and 4 more seasons in, in terms of games played at championship and above, I wouldn't have thought pal, maybe equate to a seasons more worth of games at 28. Darlow also proved himself to be well equipped at premier league level. Why don't EPL teams want him then, you ask? Probably because most of them have very solid keepers, and don't need a Darlow. Just an onjective point of view pal.

Good points, well made.

I'm liking the sound of Darlow if hope it comes off that's a solid piece of business if you're going to lose a young keeper with potential but replace him with another not much older, more experienced and still of potential for similar money.  Yep good deal indeed !
