Tony Mowbray Discussion

You're missing the point I believe. Its usual to get"walk-ons" on here a short time before we play Preston.

He is one of them. Once the game's over we don't see them again.

I see that point, but to me thats a separate issue to the one being addressed here. If he's PNE then that's its own problem, but I don't think we should be attacking each other because of the wording we use to describe the club we support.

Its an international break, nothing to talk about so lets create something. Does calling us Rovers or Blackburn really matter. No.

Nob enders do have a habit of this before their 'Big' game but it is still irrelevant. The City or Utd is also not relevant because the media tend to call them City or Utd whilst they tend to call us at best Blackburn Rovers but usually Blackburn. When I was younger there was an old man who used to get very angry about this saying 'We are Rovers' not Blackburn. It does tend to wind the oldr generation up. Oddly as they are the only nob enders you'd think it would wind them up more when they are called Preston.

Anyway why this has broken out on the Tony Mowbray discussion is odd because by the time we play them he may not be in charge by then

I'll take that bet.

He'll definitely still be here.

Anyone read Mowbrays latest interview with the LET? Some of his words just sum him up. Massively over thinking and over complicating everything to the point where the whole squad is either confused or has so many shackles added they don't perform. E.g referring to Lewis Travis having enough energy to be a good box to box midfielder:

“If you give Lewis the licence to use his legs and athleticism and go box-to-box, break in to the opposition box and have a defensive-minded midfielder behind him then there’s no reason why not.

“He can recover back in to midfield areas and help the midfield area function, but I think modern football in the 21st century has become more of a positional game

“There are the two sitting midfielders, or one holding midfielder and two No.8s as they are called who play just behind the single striker and two wingers outside of them."

WTF are you on about Tony? Play to your players strengths and keep it simple. If I was an up and coming youngster with bundles of energy and pace, he would be a terrible manager to play under.

That probably explains why we are such a static team the midfield but we've mostly operated with two defensive mids here since we landed in the Championship from the Prem.

Its got us precisely nowhere.

Why do we have to do what other teams do why can't we do what we do and let them bother about us ?

His tactics often reflect the level of bullshit he spouts in that interview. As you quite rightly say he over thinks things which often leads to over complicating things.

I also find some of his interviews patronising almost as if he is talking to absolute novices.

Fuck me Tony, if you're playing 2 and one drives forward, does the other one not 'sit'? Same as if a full back bombs forward and overlaps, somebody 'sits' (but we don't do that)?

Once again, it isn't about that! Its his ignorance which, for me, demonstrated he isn't a Rovers fan. Its really that simple!

And it "broke out" on the TM discussion thread because that's where he posted!

Again---not difficult!

Having said its irrelevant to the thread you then spend more time on it than those you are criticising!

I don't really see the problem with what he said. More generally though I wouldnt say discussing how we will score more goals from midfield as being a burning topic. The burning topic is why aren't our strikers scoring, and why has our defence regressed so badly in the last week.

Not sure why LET is asking those sorts of  questions on the back of a really poor week for the club?

Nobody saying its difficult.

All I was saying was your last line whilst trying to bring it back to Mowbray.

End of!!!

Exactly. The way the 'modern' midfield role has been divided up is utter nonsense these days. A good midfielder gets up and down the pitch, creates, scores, breaks up, tackles, defends. The rest is down to the understanding of the midfield partner to cover.

I think academies tend to turn out a lot of right footed bang average types that can play somewhere in midfield but don't really have the tools to be good anywhere else. The lack of contact that's drilled into them these days means not many are good tacklers or very robust nor are they good footballers but they master the art of controlling the ball and the 3 yard short safety pass sideways or backwards.

You get what is essentially a load of water carriers, they're ten a penny and quite cheap and some can slot in defence so lower down the food chain squads get buffed out with them.  Good managers mix them up with better players and get a tune out of them but others just juggle around trying to make the best of what they have which is a load of similar very basic midfield types.

To keep shoehorning them in they then have invent alternative names for them to try a make out they are specialists at one thing or another when in truth they are robotic and almost identikit.   The odd ones who do have a bit of individual flair or raw pace are criminally underused by some managers who seem to prefer to try and drill it out of them on the training ground and try and make them something they aren't in the name of keeping team shape.

Good post. Football has becoming very robotic, almost like a game of chess rather than the expressive art I fell in love with.

Can understand it in the Prem that's where it all stems from because so many clubs just start the season looking to stay up so knowing they usually get beat off the big clubs they look to grind point off each other.

No need for it at all at Championship level but it seems all about managers playing it safe to stay in their jobs. Pointless when you keep losing anyway though.  And as pointed out too many of the same type of player getting churned out where's before you had a better mixture which gave teams balance. Now it's wide midfielders and wide strikers and midfield types occupying forward berths and square pegs in round holes across the park designed to cancel the other side out first and foremost.

No wonder the football doesn't flow if you have a quick right sided lad now they train him to be on the left and cut inside all the time and vice versa. A quick midfielder will be told he's a wing back even though he can't cross or tackle for toffee and can't get to grips with the positional side of things in defence and some who might make a solid full back will probably be coached into a defensive sitting mid who can occasionally stop attacks and pass the ball tidily a yard sideways.

Over complicating things for basic players instead of enhancing the strengths they have and making them the best they can be in that position.

As for playing 6 foot plus strikers on the wings from the start or bringing them on out there to try and change a game ???  Biggest load of crap ever that is.

Very honest from big Keith there. And what many of us suspected. I’m nearer 60 than 50 and I can still do more than 8 headers - as could most of my generation that played even lower level football. We are producing athletes as opposed to footballers, no wonder the game is fooked.

Good interview in the Bolton News with Keith Hill the other week on this...

‘I will go in and have a game of headers in the morning and I can do two or three hundred with David Flitcroft but I can do eight with a young player and that really does concern me,” he said.

“Things like that have to be worked on. It’s nobody’s fault but it’s the individual players’ career. And all it takes it getting a ball out in the morning“

“These young players have an unbelievable opportunity. It isn’t mine – I am already here – and I have a ball in my hand every single morning.

“I go into the gym and see them all doing shoulder presses, bench presses, sit ups and then I ask them to do a little bit of two-touch and the ball is all over the place. So it’s that relationship with the ball that we are looking at as much as we possibly can, developing them.

It is difficult being a young player nowadays because they don’t go through the upbringing that we did,” he said.

“It is a different dynamic now. The young players need to know there is real pain in winning and it is not just given to them. You have to test and stress these players in a football environment’

That’s Academy football for you. Waste of time and money

Depends on what is taught and how.

When I look at the level of ball control and movement in the Premier League today and compare with the old First Division in the days English Clubs were winning the European Cup year in year out, today's football is at completely higher level technically.

I thought we were talking about League 1 and probably 2 next season. Academy football at lower levels is shit and sanitised. Doesn’t prepare them for anything .
