Do you remember old Billy who used to stand outside the White Bull selling the Telegraph, shouting what sounded like “Yoap”. When me and my mates passed him after school on our way to the Boulevard we would shout it back at him, to which he would reply “Don’t be so cheeky, you little buggers”, but never in a serious way.

I was on the train into Blackburn from Manchester last week and noticed you cant see the stadium from the trainline anymore.  I remember being able to get a great view of the stadium from the train.

Ankara, September 2003, after the match against Genclerbirligi, which Rovers lost 3-1. My Norwegian flag next to an absolutely huge Rovers flag, the biggest I’ve ever seen. Never seen it since. Anyone know whose it is/was?

Rovers had a following of around 400 in Turkey, which was decent enough under the circumstances. In 2000, two Leeds fans had been stabbed to death in Istanbul and, for a lot of people, Turkey was off limits for football. Before the draw, I remember saying that I would go anywhere except Turkey but I ended up going anyway. 

There was no trouble before, during or after the game and we had a superb time in Ankara and made some great friends. Some of them came on this messageboard for a number of years.

Flew up from the coastal town of Side for the game and spent a few days in Ankara 😀

In the weeks leading up to the game we had loads of press and media trying to stir up trouble. We (3 of us) ended up in bar at the back of the home end when around 30 riots cops ran in, followed by a bumbling idiot on the Rovers payroll telling us we're risking out lives drinking here and we must leave now or be arrested......

After some choice words, explaining we'd been in worse places than this following England away, we were escorted by bumbling idiot, 30 Turkish riot cops and a rather large tank back to the away end.

We never turned up on the day, football was crap and I had the shits for weeks after coming back.

But they can't takeaway out memories 😀

As we were leaving the airport with our luggage, we could see a large group of Turkish fans outside, singing and jumping up and down. I remember thinking, we’re in for it here. There was a line of good looking ladies in National costume who stuffed Turkish Delight into our mouths and when we got outside, we were hugged by the Turks waiting for us. There were Turkish flags and flags of St George draped together over railings and the Turkish media was filming it all, and in a positive way. I’m not sure whether or not you had arrived by then Gav, but a football match had been arranged (by Glenn & Co, I think) against Gencler supporters with more film crews present. We were drinking in the centre of Ankara before the game, never a hint of trouble, although the Rovers fans seemed to have split up into several small groups, rather than having all 400 together, so we never really attracted any attention. It was a great trip despite the defeat.

The thing I remember about the game is getting in from work about 5 minutes after the kick off and trying to figure out the team. After about 5 minutes I’d worked out 10 of the players but I couldn’t spot the 11th player. After about 30 minutes Baggio actually touched the ball for the first time and I knew who the 11 th player was ! It was an awful performance.

i remember being in a fishing match on the canal near feniscowles,catch about two tiny roach,legged it to the van and got home just in time to watch us get outplayed😥,it was a nice day weather wise,thats the only positive about the day🙂

that man garner💗for someone who smoked 20 a day and loved a pint or 5 of thwaites best bitter he was very quick on the turn,he had a knack of anticipation as well,knew exactly where the ball was going,amazing what passing the ball forwards quickly and getting behind the defence can achieve🙂

When you look at the forward play in that game and compare it with the current team’s forward play it’s like they’re playing another game with different rules. That third goal was a great move with some superb first time passing.

Simon Garner at what he did best.

Sellers a superb talent - what we would give for a craftsmen like that now.

Andy Kennedy wasn't great but in a different league to Gallagher.

Happy times.

Might be wrong here but think the turning point for Garner under Kendall came in a 1-0 Rovers' win at Chesterfield in the height of winter.  Seem to recall Garner netting with a header at the 'open' end.  It was one bloody cold day and a treacherous journey there and back.

That was great! The whole move for the 3rd goal was absolute class. They played with a freedom you don't see now.
