Season finale: Rovers vs Birmingham City

I know a lot of us don’t care. But we really do care, we don’t stop supporting our club, just because x owns the club, or x manages the club. Also, Mowbray’s future doesn’t come down to this one game.

I always want the Rovers to win... and I don’t want to see Rovers passed on the table by Forest or Coventry. 

Arma scores the 1st goal, his final goal in the blue & white. Gally gives us something to think about (his future with the club), as he scores the winner. 2-1, Rovers.

Anyone else remember the away game v Big Club in the early noughties I think, a poor game which we won 1-0 with Duff scoring the only goal (?)

Anyway, the notable feature of the game appeared just before the kick-off when Dunny escorted his dolly bird along the side of the pitch and plonked her down

among the Rovers supporters behind the goal! Lots of ribaldry of course which she took in great strides with a beaming smile!

She was a Sun page 3 girl at the time. seemed odd she wasn't in a hospitality suite or something but we appreciated it!

A resounding 4-1 win to finish off a wretched season and paper over the cracks that will be apparent again by Sept.

Facebook crew break through the security and carry Mowbray on their shoulders all the way to RVC planning offices.  Give our messiah the tools he needs to make us into Brentford they cry.

My only reall memories of Birmingham are when we played them at St Andrews when the pitch looked like a tractor had been let loose on it. And I think once the floodlights failed.

This is Mowbray's (and a lot of our players too I imagine) dream match - end of season, nothing to play for, the beach is in sight and playing a poor side who are already on their holidays judging by their result last week.

2-1 or 3-1 Rovers with the players clogging up social media after the game saying how nice it is to finish the season with a win. I'd be too embarrassed to post anything at all after the run we've been on second half of the season.

We won the one I went to. I distinctly remember a black lad dropping his trousers and bending over as our coach went past him!

It wasn't a celebration!!

(just looked it up, August 2002----we won 1-0!)

The thought of Birmingham City always makes me smile.

Years ago Jasper Carrot was in a sketch with Robert Powell, sitting in a prison cell where there was a bucket of faeces. Powell said something like "I never thought I'd spend Saturday afternoon sitting on a cold seat staring at a load of crap".

Jasper replied," I do that every fortnight at St Andrews".

For me it has all the ominous feelings of the Reading home game back in 2016 (the year before relegation to League One) where many of that side were gone by the start (and or end) of the disastrous campaign that followed.

Rovers 3-1 Reading - 8/5/16 (Bennett, Graham and Jackson with the goals for Rovers)

Lambert (gone by start)

GK - Steele (dropped/never returned from mid season 16/17)

RB - Marshall (gone mid season)

CB - Hanley (gone by start)

CB - Duffy (gone soon after start)

LB - Kilgallon (gone by start)

MID - Lenihan (defender by middle/end of next campaign)

MID - Lowe (remained)

MID - Jordi Gomez (gone by start)

ATT - Bennett (remained)

ATT - Graham (remained, in fact signed permanent after this game)

ATT - Grimes (gone by start)

Subs used

Jackson (gone by start)

Conway (remained)

Evans (remained)

Meaning of that squad of 14 players, 6 players were gone by the transfer deadline that followed, with 2 more gone by mid season and one out of favour, meaning 64% of the team that played that day and the manager were changed/replaced by the fateful day at Brentford a year later.

Fast forward to Saturday

Last Rovers games for: Harwood-Bellis? Bell? Johnson? Armstrong? Elliott? Douglas? Bennett? Evans? Downing?

Mowbray?

Plus Trybull, Holtby, Branthwaite - all likely to miss out completely

Frankly, with all the fan unrest, I’m surprised it has not already happened. even 100 fans, organized correctly, should send a message. 1,000 would be a real statement. There’s got to be 1,000 unhappy, rabid Rovers fans in Lancashire, & thereabout. 

“Mowbray told us to expect playoffs- can’t get there from 15th place”, etc.

For fans to let mgmt/owners know their discontent, this is what needs to happen. Peaceful! No drunken mob storming Ewood.

Oh wait, the last two seasons.

The only thing to be excited about for this finale is that finally this steaming dog shit of a season will be over.

Yet I have a feeling that this time next year we will long for these 'glory days' back.

Yeah, we won 2-0. Bent got the opener, but the game is mostly remembered for a brilliant solo goal from Duffer. Duff's goal is at 21:51 on the vid below:

I remember being gutted about the result that night. That was our game in hand which we needed to win to close the gap on 4th place. We had a genuine chance of nabbing a top 4 spot ahead of Arsenal towards the end of that season! It feels surreal even typing that out right now.

I miss the days when I was excited about our matches. I feel nothing in relation to Saturday's game. There have been many moments like that not just this season, but over the last 10 years. Bloody awful feeling it is. The pillocks in Pune have no idea how much damage they have caused.

To those that say "we could be Bolton or Wigan" we could also be Leicester if this lot employed the right people at the club and let them get on with it. They have the funds to do it, but sadly there isn't a football brain amongst any of them.

Three days later we beat Liverpool 1-0 at Ewood with ‘that’ Tugay Gerrard moment. I was at both games and I can’t remember feeling such a gap between deflation and elation in consecutive matches.
