I spoke to one of the Radio Lancashire reporters a few years back, and he told me of meeting a new Radio Norfolk Sports presenter who was saying that he was " so busy " covering both Norwich & National League King's Lynn. " How many teams do you have to cover ? ", our man thought for a moment ... " Oh, we're lucky really, just the 7 ", " Lucky ? " replied the Radio Norfolk man, " Yes, if we were covering the whole of " Old Lancashire ", it would be 17 !! "

The 17 being both Manchester & Liverpool Clubs, Burnley, Blackburn, Preston, Blackpool, Wigan, Bolton, Fleetwood, Morecambe, Accrington, Salford, Barrow, Oldham and at the time Bury ....

Unfortunately these days ‘stewarding’ is just a few folk employed in a ground on a match day to ensure a club keeps its safety certificate.

They do zero stewarding as recent pitch invasions have shown.

You'd think they'd be required to actually earn that money when the need arises but a bit like identity parades it seems they just get paid for taking part.

Mind you at least they aren't hiring teams of nightclub bouncers from Gtr Manc now to cause trouble with our own fans.

Rochdale?

Senior moment, I was trying to come up with the other one and assumed it was when Bury were there, Rochdale is clearly the other one. Bury never started the 2019-20 season due to their issues, which was Salford's first after winning their play-off. The play-off was against AFC Fylde, so it would have been an " Old Lancashire " Club, whoever won ...

I believe the poster was pointing out that Burnley too had been English champions in the not too distant past and had also played in European competition.

If he was pointing out a successful period in Burnley's history, it's probably best not to snarkily validate it by referencing someone who mentioned the mid 80s.

Easily forgotten I suppose.

Aww @Tyrone Shoelaces, that's a bit harsh!!

As one who was also a Rochdale Council Taxpayer until a couple of years ago, I always had a soft spot for them.

Several of my former colleagues were season ticket-holders at the Crown Oil Arena. If it didn't clash with our game at home to Luton, I'd have gone - for auld lang syne - to their last home League match for - at least - a season.

Over the years I must have been to Spotland nearly as many times as I have been to Ewood. I don’t go now at all since the new current board started shitting on the Rugby League club that shares the ground with them. They’ve wrecked the chances of Hornets doing anything and now they’ve wrecked the football club. What goes around comes around.

I lived in Rochdale for 20 plus years and all my friends are dale supporters and it’s my second club. In the past dale have always had that little bit of quality players on the way up. I’ve been a few times this season and dale look fragile in all areas of the pitch. It’s a disaster for the club and hard to see how they’ll get back

Bury gone, Oldham and Rochdale in non league.

Such a plethora of clubs in old Lancashire (especially in the vicinity of the Manc giants), shows how this region is the heartland of the game, but obviously very tough to remain competitive/solvent.

I’ve lived in Rochdale since we moved from Blackburn when I was 5 years old. They used to be my second club but since the new board took over and destroyed the relationship between the two clubs I’ve stopped going to the football. As I said previously I’ve probably been to Spotland as often as I have to Ewood over the last 60 years. Back in the day I had several mates who played for them.  They’ll never get another penny from me now, or any members of my family, if I can help it. If the new board resign as they should do I’ll reconsider. Their treatment of Hornets has been nothing short of disgraceful. They seem to be the sort of people who know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

Been away from the area too long and didn't realise what was happening to Hornets. What has happened there? Always look for the results (used to go with my Dad years ago - the JPL final in the 70's being one of my earliest sporting memories) and was looking forward to seeing them at Llanelli this season - until I found out the South Wales team has folded. Feels like dark days for the lower levels of the pro game.

Burnley Rovers didn't adopt their Claret n Boo colour's until 1910..and even then in was in homage to Aston Villa.

Wonder who influenced their early kits!!😆

It's believed each Director took turns to pick a kit each season, sometimes they would say no or little change ... that was until they settled on Villa's colours in 1910 ...

You wouldn’t learn any of that reading Th’ Obby.  It’s beyond useless now. I think it’s produced in somewhere like Warrington. Hardly any local news and full of nonsense.

In the spirit of the detours  the Birmingham(A) game thread's taken,@Tyrone Shoelaces , surely it's not just now. The Rochdull Observer's been flirting with being beyond useless for decades!!

Sounds like they're ripe and ready for a job at Rovers.

You must be thinking of another team. They were never in the Conference. The fanzine was called “ Exceedingly Good Pies “.

Darlo had the best one - “ Mission Impossible “.
