Transfer Window - COMPLETE. Where’s Gregg?

Recommended Posts

I’d bring Gary Cahill in for one season and make him captain. Old head, good pro, rafts of experience, played a vital part in bournemouths promotion and would help the young lads bed in for a season ready to step up the year after. Captain material to organise and shoulder responsibility and played at Bolton so would probably come to the NW and is a free transfer . Would have the mark Hughes sort of signing feel. When he played for us not when he managed

Just asking but where do you think his best position was ? I think he proved it wasn’t right wing.

He's a left back/left wing back.

I can only imagine that is his best position due to the amount of assists he had for cardiff - 9 assists in first half of the season for them.

I think his total for us was 1 in 10.

7th top assists in the Championship.

Giles played as an old fashioned left winger (rather than the current fashion of playing inverted wingers) for Cardiff, according to transfermarkt, he played 17 out of 21 matches for Cardiff as a left winger

Ryan Giles supposedly off to Boro on loan (is there anyone they’re not getting?).

Just didn’t happen for him here, but Mowbray had a big part to play in that.

Their fans can look forward to Lenihan picking the ball up and thumping it over Giles head into the stand then?

Cardiff were playing 3-4-3 and 5-4-1 that season, so those stats may not tell the full story. He was playing in the midfield four in the 3-4-3, covering the full back position when necessary - and in the 5-4-1 was playing as a wing back, moving forward when necessary.

But in any case, TM's management didn't get the best out of him. Sticking him on the right was another baffling TM special.

Looks like he provided most assists from set pieces, which makes TM's decision even more baffling.

Ps, those stats sites all had him down as a left wing back before he came here. I remember looking him up. Half a season with Mowbray and he's a left/right midfielder.

Bagan played left back/left wing back for Cardiff whenever he was fit

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joel-bagan/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/742163/wettbewerb/GB2/saison/2021

Giles filled in at LWB when Bagan was injured, but Giles is much more a winger than a wing back/full back, which is only emphasised by how badly Cardiff's defence performed during that period,

Although as you state, most of his assists for Cardiff were from set pieces, so maybe he was nothing more than a set piece specialist who doesn't offer much from open play... quite why he couldn't provide a few assists from set pieces for Rovers is a mystery though eh?

I think Curtis from Portsmouth will be one of our first signings,

Talking to some on the Portsmouth side, they say he goes missing alot and has become a bit of a luxury.

Personally always thought he'd be decent pick up

Why do you think he will be one of our first signings? Just from what you say about him, those don't sound like traits JDT will appreciate.

Abuse him? Or just play him out of position sometimes.

Definitely a genuine case whereby he was poorly used overall but nothing like a bit of hyperbole.

Mowbray didn't used him properly and tbh it was pointless signing cos he never played him properly.  I would question him why he signed him in the first place and why doesn't target someone else he had more confidence in and would used properly

Its a daunting challenge for any manager. We go into the new season without Van Hecke, Lenihan, we'll probably lose Big Ben and Nyambe. Ayala?( Rarely fit anyway.)

That's 4 of our very best players. We need 2 CB's, at least one central striker, 2 full-backs and additional cover in midfield. Ideally decent cover between the sticks as well.

That would be a difficult job for a club whose owners were interested, never mind us.

We're feeling optimistic because of what positivity the new management team are giving off but, in truth, they are only as good as their players.

You can look at it one of two ways.

If you're being negative you can say that we have a lot of holes to fill and not a lot of time to fill them.

If you're being positive you can say that JDT and GB have a lot of flexibility to shape this team.

If anything I was disappointed with Mowbray extending Gallagher - he's lumped Sam on the next manager on (I'm sure) pretty substantial wages.

Down to bodies in the building philosophy of the manager

Cantwell would be a shrewd signing. Didn't impress at Bournemouth and they opted out of the £11m option. With one year left of his deal I don't understand why we don't just try and sign him permanently - must be on daft wages. Loan him and potentially sign him permanently if we go up, or let him leave elsewhere (or on worse terms) if him and we don't perform well enough. Just speculating...

Last year of his contract too, it's just not going to happen. They will look to cash in on him I think.

They just triggered a clause, so they will receive a fee either way. Cantwell will have a lot more to play for if it's a loan rather than a permanent deal.
