Call me old fashioned but this bloody DOF is juts another level of bureaucracy for me, why do we need a director of football? All our efforts should be targeted at getting a manager, not another level between him and the owners.

Madness, waste of time.

The DOF will be what, a £500k gig?

Money that could be put to better use, IMO.

Can you just imagine if he gets it? Venky's are probably under the impression that it's William Shakespeare, Alex Ferguson, Delia Smith and the late, great Shane Warne on the shortlist.

thats a very good point, if they're happy to throw money at that, then compensation will literally be much ado about nothing...

I'm also unsure of what folk see in Ainsworth, still a rookie Manager learning his trade.

In fact, if you look at who Sky Bet currently have has favourites, he's by far the most experienced manager out of any of them (as Carvalhal isn't actually available anymore, so shouldn't be on there)

The thing with the director or football means any manager/coach coming in, focuses almost entirely on tactics, the playing style and the players themselves. Looking back at January and how frustrated we were all left, at the lack of signings made to push on. Hopefully if we have a decent director of football in place this wouldn't happen. That said it only works well if the two work well together and more importantly any signings work. Mowbray was an absolute dinosaur but the one place I'll give him credit, he and his staff made very few poor signings.

Are we talking about Mowbray who rejected lots of recommendations from the scouting team?

Also went against the strategy to sign Ayala who has been an absolutely useless signing a cost we didn't need to incurr.

I mean as in every loan player bar Kasey palmer came in and did well here. The problem being none stay beyond the initial loan. The few freebies and cheap signings he got. Ie pickering and dack have been value for money. Kaminski again absolute class. There are examples where they haven't done as well but on the whole I'd say they did/have. Whether that's down to mowbray or his staff I wouldn't know.

Fair enough but his experience is lower league.

Every loan player bar Kasey Palmer? 😂

Leighton Clarkson

Poveda

Branthwaite

That's just initial thoughts

The DOF and head coach need to be singing from the same hymn sheet because one will be pushing players onto the other.  He'll have to use them whether he likes it or not although at this club i wouldn't be too sure.

Nor would i about who would be pushing the DOFs buttons.

For Ferguson it is probably required, with his criminal record, I am not sure he would qualify for a visa to visit India for the yearly review.

I know things have changed in football but three of our successful managers back in the day -

Ken Furphy came from Watford when they were shit.

Gordon Lee came from Port Vale who were roughly where they are now.

Jim Smith came from Colchester, again roughly where they are now.

All three went on to be poached away from Rovers to manage in the First Division.

Dont forget Howard Kendall never managed before and poached away to first division

Yep. Some short memories on here.

Trybull and Barry Douglas also useless.

Edun was a signing we didn't even need to make having signed Pickering and he's been poor to boot.

Chapman didnt work out twice Zeefuick useless, Giles disappointing, Hedges looks really really poor to me.

Signed Kaminsky but also signed a Greek keeper who never saw the light of day over two seasons, and two of the worst keepers ever to put gloves on in Walton and Pears.

Gallagher - and we already knew he wasn't that good from his first spell here, although nowhere near as bad as now.

Definitely way more miss than hit in the transfer market.

A gofer, probably cheap and grateful and a target for fan displeasure when things go wrong. This takes the heat of those above so a shrewd move by the serial survivor cockroach CEO.

Interesting to learn that only being a manager for five games guarantees failure, which was five more than Paisley and Dalglish had before being handed the biggest job in the country, and that no manager with a spine would inherit incumbent coaches, which Dalglish, Souness and Hughes all did.

I know you're trying to be clever, but please tell me you're not comparing Tony Parkes with Lowe and Benson.

Shame on you.

Also Dalglish bought in Harford as his assistant who'd already experienced success as a manager at the top level in his own right and Hughes brought his own trusted team as well Bown and Eddie whose surname I can't spell.
