I would certainly not think that was the case. He's said that he's made the choice to do it.

He's not a high profile name for the papers to be threatening to out him. There must be much higher profile gay footballers that presumably people within the game know about.

At the moment Jake is a young lad who has just got a professional contract. He has scored I think 30 goals for the youth team at Blackpool this season but his first team experience is currently 9 minutes at the end of their last game at Peterborough, where they lost 5-0. He might become a great star in the future, he might just as easily disappear without trace.

That poster may claim "not to care" but, for those of us that are gay, we care a lot. 

Understanding your sexuality is confusing and alienating, particularly when you don't see yourself represented in the media or a sport that you enjoy. 

Jake may or may not go on to have a successful career in football, but the courage he's shown to come out and speak up at the start of it will be a comfort and inspiration to many.

For the avoidance of doubt I agree that Jake has shown tremendous courage in coming out. My post above was in response to others saying that they had not heard of him. That probably applies to the vast majority of football fans, including me. There’s no chance that this was pre-emptive to a tabloid sting.

Hate to be a party pooper, but this is the issue for me. 

Fair play to Jake for what he's done, takes real guts, genuinely don't know if I'd have the courage. 

But in reality, it's a very small step in a long journey. 

Think the 1 in 10 theory was rubbished, and the last census estimated about 4% LGB. So, from the twenty staring 11's in the Prem each week, that's about 9 people, factor in substitutes and we're looking at a full football team of individuals that are keeping this side of their lives secret. 

Obviously, entirely their right to do so, but I won't feel like we've made real progress in this area until it becomes the norm for some of the superstars in the biggest league in the World to be able to live their lives openly. 

 For example, how long till two teammates are dating? Happened a few times in the WSL I believe. How long till the Premier League has a situation where the GK is in a relationship with the No.9? I'll be honest, feels an eternity away for me at the moment, but hopefully I'm very wrong.

It's one thing to not make a huge deal about supporting equality. I'm sure most of us don't give it much thought on any given day.

It's quite another to go out of your way and refuse to play so you can avoid supporting equality. Idrissa Gueye seems to belong to this group. Senegal teammate Cheikhou Kouyate called him "a real man". Ismaila Sarr with similar support.

Wouldn't mind seeing the lad put in a strong challenge or two should he ever play against them.

A person's sexuality should really be a personal and private matter to all intents and purposes in this day and age.

Even where someone is in the public eye, that doesn't make them public property, or disallow their right to a personal life in private.

When someone is employed as a highly expensive specialist (e.g. football manager, star striker, professional referee) but is clearly inept in their role, that (their ineptitude) can legitimately be called into question. Whether they are heterosexual, homosexual, bi-sexual, a-sexual or undecided has shag all to do with their job. End of.

 

I used to be a bigot. Now I just accept that everyone else is always wrong, and get on with it.

Imagine refusing to play because a rainbow triggers you. What does he do when a rainbow naturally occurring rainbow happens? Shuts his curtains and waits for it to pass?

Absolutely. I actually suspect one of our current squad is, though I'm not going to say who and it's only a hunch. But there's a fair chance statistically that amongst our senior and youth teams right now, one or more will be gay.

Saw this today, though it's from the 18th. A senior Blackpool player has had some 10-year old homophobic tweets dredged up and has immediately deleted them, apologised in what comes across to me on paper as a very sincere manner, and Jake has accepted it.

Daniels: "What you said ten years ago at 17 years old doesn’t define the man you are today. I am proud to be your teammate and to be part of the Blackpool family - we are all moving football forwards together."

Ironic that the remarks were at the same age Jake is now. Good to see the human capacity for growth and acceptance on display.

Czech footballer Jakub Jankto comes out as gay

This one really does strike me as brave. I dunno about the Czech Republic specifically, but Eastern Europe in general has a bit of a reputation for homophobia (and as we've seen from the treatment out there at times towards black players, can let their bigotry show in very nasty fashion). Takes even more guts to come out there I should think.

He's a Czech international, and currently playing at Sparta Prague on loan from Getafe. He could have waited til the end of the season when he probably won't be playing in the Czech Republic, but has done it now with months of potential abuse left in the season (I think, anyway, not too familiar with the Czech league!). The club have been supportive of him, which is good. Hopefully he doesn't get too hard a time of it.

My Czech fiancée would concur.

Regarding your points @bluebruce, Czech Republic is pretty similar to the UK on this, with a tolerant/accepting attitude to homosexuality. They are also the least religious country in the world (based on % of population), which may contribute to this liberal attitude.
