The latter quote is very good. Was it Arsene Wenger?

Shankly also came out with another cracker which I can't recall exactly but it was something along the lines of his wife complaining that he'd rather watch Everton than take her out to which he retorted that he'd rather watch Tranmere or Tranmere reserves.

No doubt MP will manage to find something in that that offends him as well.

No I don't find anything wrong in those other quotes(the "important" quote was from Jurgen Klopp).

Why I am uneasy about the Shankly quote is that I always wonder what the bereaved families from football tragedies feel when it is repeated.

I think we should caveat the above with the same Brfcs posters wanted Mowbray out in Oct of the promotion season, which frankly was embarrassing, but this is an England thread.

Do you want Southgate sacked?

If we had a clear replacement i'd definitely say yes. He's had 3 tournaments to win one,yes he's done better than anyone else the last 20/30 years but there wasn't much to beat.

If i was the FA i'd seriously have a look who's out there to replace him. He's done some good things like brought the team together as one,no more cliques but also he's does stuff like taking Saka off when he was having one of his best games for England.I don't agree with Chaddy's excuse that he was shattered,he's 21 he ain't 40.

Southgate is a great guy but for me he's had his go.

I agree....

World Cup 18:
Tunisia
Panama
Belgium
Colombia (pens)
Sweden
Croatia
Belgium (again)

Euro 21:
Croatia
Scotland (draw)
Czech Republic
Germany (👍)
Ukraine
Denmark (extra time)
Italy

World Cup 22:
Iran
USA (draw)
Wales
Senegal
France

That tells you everything…

If they won't sack him I'd be asking him to refresh the backroom team.  I know he's close to his mates but something needs to change.

The people including me saying 2 years ago that mowbray should have gone were right,he did nothing to prove they were wrong in wanting him gone, maybe they're once again right with Southgate

Southgate’a limitations were exposed in the Euro final. Everything was in our favour - big final in front of our own fans in our own national stadium, we took an early lead yet somehow we managed to blow it. Southgate didn’t have a clue how to counter Italy’s game plan

I agree Southgate has run his course. He’s assembled a good group of players but doesn’t have the nous to take England further. They won’t sack him but if we don’t win the next Euros I wouldn’t be surprised  to see him walk away.

Have you seen the list of managers we’ve had over 20/30yrs? The real cream of the crop from across Europe?

I respect your opinion of course but we must keep Southgate at all costs for me, no reason to replace him.

Can you recommend his successor ? (Who will have to be suited to international football, have the respect of their players, keep the squad united, be willing to accept the media scrutiny of their personal life, financial affairs, and family that inevitably follows their appointment)

I’ve read this a few times on here now, it doesn’t matter a jot, a poor argument in my opinion.

Every England manager has failed miserably since Alf Ramsey in 66, Southgate has a record many of those managers would be proud of.

He stays and wins the Euros for me, I may even dust off the passport myself.

I agree with your first part.

I don't agree that Terry Venables or Sir Bobby Robson failed miserably either. Others yes I agree

Why would you break up a team including the manager and players who have such a bond and performed very well yesterday? The players trust him.

Why would you seriously look at who's out there if you already believe you have the right person for the job? Apart from Howe or Potter who else is performing well enough to warrant it? are either ready for job? probably not but 4 years time after Southgate has hopefully them to winning a world cup or Euro's.

Yes Saka was having a very good game but his he running on empty you surely take him off?

No doubt it was clever at the time but subsequent events..............

Many people live for their football and following their team. It defines their lives, they build their lives around it, very little else matters to them. Shankly no doubt he would have been horrified by Hillsborough but  that doesn’t mean his quote wasn’t right

Haven’t got a clue. All I’m saying is Southgate has done well but IMO he’s taken England as far as he can go.

As I explained earlier my concern is how the bereaved families feel when they hear it.

Displaying your usual self-awareness, I see

Care to explain?

It's been reported by the FA have no plan in place if Southgate was to go. They want him to stay. I and others want him to stay and win something with this group of players trust Southgate and enjoyed playing for him.

What happens if your first 2 choices don't want it yet like Howe and Potter? Who then? Lampard or Gerrard? Maybe Steve Holland?

Rovers will play 46 league games this season. At current pace they'll lose 23 of them. I believe that you do feel more for Rovers, but that's a lot of defeat to absorb.

Anyway, back to England. I think that Southgate will stay. Most of this team will be around for the foreseeable future. They like him. He likes them.

I do think that some changes will be made behind the scenes. His substitutions are a bit odd at times, and he needs to advance his tactical nous.

So Southgate is good at the off-field stuff, but not so good at the on-field stuff. It is no wonder we are not winners.

If we are talking successors though.  The Canada manager Hermann.  Hes an Englishman and he plays attacking expansive football

Herdman has done a very good job with Canada

Howe at Newcastle if they can persuade him to get off the money train.

Maybe in 4 years yes. Probably top choice with Graham Potter.

By saying not much to beat I was meaning the results in the tournaments not the Managers.I would love to be wrong and see him lifting a trophy if he stays.

How do you know the next manager wouldn't have a bond too, they're big men i'm sure they can handle a new guy in place,i wouldn't trust the FA to pick a new man though, they only chose Southgate because he was a safe bet after Allardyce.

The manager doesnt have to be English imo were trying to win cups not be patriotic.

If Saka really has to be subbed it wouldn't have been Mount who  isn't good enough to be in the squad imo or Sterling whos just had a traumatic week and who cant have been 100% ready to play,You need a goal get the inform player on Rashford or one of the best performers in the Prem this season Maddison on.

Southgate 100 percent deserves another tournament. The players like and respect him. Hes revolutionised the squad.  He seems to be learning from his mistakes ie not going defensive against a top team. The euros will probably be his last

You said last week that you would sack him no matter what!

His management at he World Cup was so naive, they left so many gaps and he also managed to do the Croatian mangers team talk for him.
